Just as a note, you may want to remove the information about Big Daddy’s past in Kick-Ass. Issue #4 came out today only introducing the character, and no mention of his origin or previous jobs was made in the book.

I have never understood this belief that a film has to be “fun” in order to work. What does that mean? I guess as a fan of Bergman, Altman, and Fellini films, fun is relative term to me. A lot of people thought THE DARK KNIGHT wasn’t “fun”, but look at all the money it made and it’s terrific reviews.

I do agree that SR was off, but not because of the things you mentioned. I still think it was the length and unimaginative, straight forward editing approach that made it seem flat, but to each his own.

You forgot Superman’s first trip to the dentist, when his teeth break the drill. Oh, and Superman’s first physical: The doctor hits his knee with the hammer thingy, and Superman kicks the doctor into the next room . . . .

Oh, the wild and crazy stories we’ve missed out on all these years . . . . we just have to see a Superman origin story rebooted yet again . . . .

Yawn.

So I gather you liked the kid, the schism between Superman and Lois and the rehashed land grab plot device…all those “dark” elements in the film.

Well, those are all the things I hated about the film. I still maintain these are the reasons the film was “off” — and consequently NOT fun to watch. They also ran counter to the comics (at least the prevailing relationships in the comics) — which goes a long way in understanding why these elements fell flat.

There were many things good about the film, but the items I listed earlier are NOT those elements. In my humble opinion, of course…

The two Donner Superman films — despite any flaws they may have — were at least fun to watch and are classic films. These are films that can be watched over and over; not watched for a few years and then pulled out again to be enjoyed over and over (I can only say this has been my experience).

However, Superman Returns does not have the same appeal and this is due to the weird and OFF dynamics between the characters and a general lack of fun in the film.
