Rachel Nichols Talks Trek Look September 2, 2008
by Anthony Pascale , Filed under: ST09 Cast , trackback
Rachel Nichols, who had a regular role on JJ Abrams show Alias, also has a role in the new Star Trek movie. It has been revealed she is playing a cadet at Starfleet Academy, and in a new interview she talks a little about her look in the movie.
Red for Trek
Rachel Nichols still isn’t talking about her role in the new Star Trek movie, but she did talk about her hair, telling the Maine Morning Sentinel.
I was a redhead for ‘Star Trek’ and ‘G.I. Joe.’ For the first time in my life I had to dye my hair. In all my years of modeling I never had to dye my hair. I worked with J.J. before in ‘Alias,’ and he asked really nicely if I would dye my hair.
…
I had red hair up until five weeks before my wedding. It’s the sexiest red color you’ve even seen.
And if you want to see what it looks like, check this out…

Nichols Before (L, in October ‘07) and during (R, in December ‘07) the Star Trek shoot
Rachel has not gone into any more detail on her character in the past, but she did drop this clue a few months back, telling The Times Online:
They’ve done a very good job in keeping the character I play under wraps. All I can say is that it’s a memorable role.
[minor spoilers] However, according to a trusted TrekMovie source, Rachel will be playing an Orion.

Are the boots keepsakes or souveneirs from her “Trek” shoot? ;)
Bond has Bond girls, Kirk has ‘Kirk chicks’, and she looks like a prime Kirk chick to me! Woof!
I bet she is Chekovs “FIRST” LMAO!!!!
I think that’s Bruce Greenwood in the background of the red Nichols. I guess some of the Trek people were just in the same place at the same time.
She also said her role was “small”, so don’t expect her to grace the screen too much. If we see her in all her green goodness for even a few moments, though, it’s fine by me… as long as we see her. :-D
Looks like somebody got herself some souvenir boots from the set!
;-)
Scott B. out.
- Cool name….!!!
Is this the second cast member we know of playing an Orion?
It would make sense. If you ask someone completely unfamiliar with Trek about Trek, you’ll find that the “hot green chick” is a pretty recognizable pop culture icon. I know that it was one of the most recognizable characters for me before I started watching the show (repeats) at around age 11.
Because of that, I think it makes sense for them to have Orions as more than a passing cameo in this film. I don’t think they’re going to be integral to the plot or anything, but I’ll bet you anything there’s an Orion in one of the trailers doing a sexy Matrix-like dance scene.
- ..or .. i should say more something like ..cool redheaded trekkie girl…
RE: myself,
Nope, not the second person cast as Orion. Should have clicked the link before posting :P
red headed orion girl !!!
I like her with red hair. she looks sexy. Kirk is a ladies man and he usualy goes after what he wants. i wonder who will Play Carol Marcus. I also wonder who will play Kirks nemisis at the acedamy Finnigan. Then theres kirks old flame Ruth from the episode shore leave. Then What about Dr Janice Lester. Who would play her. Anyone have any ideas.
Can someone make the obligatory reference to webpages of the nice Australian lass who pioneered the thin green Orion girl look?
My gut tells me though, that this Orion business is a cover for who she’s really portraying. I wouldn’t put it past the Supreme Court as a secretive way of having Carol Marcus or another ‘well known Kirk romance’ in the film.
ME-YOW!
This chick has nothing interesting to say about Star Trek. No One cares about her dumb hair! Or her stupid Wedding I just wish she would talk more about Star Trek.
Red Hair??? She’s playing Mystique! Oh wait…. Mystique had blue skin. Nevermind.
Is that a green smudge above her knee?
I likee.
Since when do Orions have red hair?
I have no clue who she is to begin with, so she could have been cast as a frakkin’ Klingon targh, for all it means spoiler-wise………
Yes, I’m getting cranky waiting for some red meat.
So…..she’s going to be Hott-er?? Alright!!
No doubt she will be shagged by Kirk!
#15 – I agree. I think it’s what they call a slow news day.
I actually thinks she looks better as a redhead! Mmmm…Ginger Orion!
maybe she’s playing Gary Mitchell, kind of like a starbuck re-boot
Right picture, Grrrrrrrrrrr.
Left picture, GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
It’s a fact that blondes and redheads can usually transitiion fairly natually between redhair and blonde hair (as long as the shade is correctly matched).
Me, I don’t go much for blondes. I’m much more partial to the red hair.
Also, if done right, I can definitely see red hair working on an Orion.
Welcome ta’ “Tea Time Chat” wit’ British Naval Du…
Rachel Nichols: Who exactly are you?
BND: Uuuhhhh… I’m tha’ host o’ this show…
Rachel Nichols: Shouldn’t you be wearing pants?
BND: Uuhhhh… well, mayhpas. So, ye’ gunna be wearin’ a pointy thong-like loiny-clothe like Sting did in tha’ ’80s film “Dune”? I mean color-coded per yer’ department and…
Rachel Nichols: OK… I’m just going to leave…
BND: Arrrrrr… but I’m mostly harmless, lass… arrrr… why do I become tha’ fool around redheads? Well, anyways… me next guest Melvar Geschloptin just posted tha’ new Starry Trek film script on tha’ internet…
Paramount Security: Come with me sir. (pummels BND with Tom Cruise’s abandoned combs and Melvar’s head)
BND: Uuuhhhh… I canna win today… Yo Joe, yo ho ho!
Arrrrrr…
Kirk bangs her, no question about it…
Man, Rachel Nichols is HOT!!! Even HOTTER w/ red hair!!! =P
I-like-it A-LOT!!! (Down, big fella’!)
I think though, that the red hair would clash too much with the traditional Orion green… Perhaps the Orions will not be “as green” as in the past…?
The only reaction I had to this interview on first reading was: ‘Damn! She’s getting married!’ ;)
“Girl pretty. Charlie like.”
The red hair works for her, most definitely!
When it comes to rachel Nichels. RED ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anthony, you had me at “Rachel Nichols.”
Well, JJ is keeping with the “Beautiful Women of Star Trek” tradition….
More boring nothing-information from a minor player for the trek fanboys……….
Just out of curiosity………..
Since her last name is Nichols is she the illegitimate daughter of Gene Roddenberry and Nichelle Nichols?
It would certainly explain her hotness! LMAO!
#38, #24, and #15
Who cares if she doesn’t have a lot to say about the movie? She’s not supposed to talk about it. And besides, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but she is rather fetching. Why does she need an excuse to get her picture in Trekmovie?
Hell, Anthony, I say post lots of pictures of random pretties even if they have only a passing association with Star Trek. We’re obviously not going to get any spoiler pics.
Oh, and #38-
With a completely and utterly fanboy name like yours, are you actually capping on fanboys? And just what exactly does your name mean? That there were only seven good movies in the history of cinema?
Methinks back to the drawing board on the comments handle for you.
#40 – Just saying, and I know Anthony works very hard, that this wasn’t the most substantial article posted in recent weeks. That’s why I agreed with #15. Everyone’s entitled to an opinion.
Will Kirk get the green pussy? Survey says ‘yes’.

Capping? And there were on 6 TOS movies! My username means that other than the TOS movies none of the other trek movies were good and this recasting sucks, you must move forward not back when it comes to Trek, and if you cant get the real cast dont do it at all.
So, is this Rachel Nichols the illegitimate child of Nichelle Nichols + Gene Roddenberry? or Nichelle + Shatner?

Remember, this is a re-invisioning of Trek, those will probably be ignored, for fresh ideas! LOL!
Anthony,
Did you cover the final day of the Experience? I am surprised to see that nothing has been posted.
She looks hot no matter WHAT hair color :-D
She looks a bit bony for an Orion dancing girl. I guess they can pad her bikini out a little.
Ah! Here’s Janice Lesterm perchance?
In WNMHGB didn’t Gary Mitchell make a reference to Kirk and a cute red head at the acadamy?
#44
William Shatner was in Generations, as was the Enterprise. According to the reasoning in your user name, it would qualify as one of the only good movies. And just a bit of info, the movies DID move forward and were not successful. But of course you would know that as according to your logic:
The Enterprise+ William Shatner as Kirk= good movie anyone else=bad
#42
Define substantial. Would it be an article about mini-mates? Or an article about video games? Or the greatest labor episodes?
My opinion is that this site doesn’t have to be the internet equivalent of a hard-hitting Mike Wallace 60 Minutes investgative report to make it front page worthy. It seemed to me that you were agreeing with someone who was really going out of their way to whine and complain.
From # 15’s comments:
“This chick has nothing interesting to say about Star Trek. No One cares about her dumb hair! Or her stupid Wedding ”
I mean, really. What a ridiculous thing to say. How can it be taken seriously?

Actually I thought that was funny!
I heartily support articles like this one here.
In fact, I’d petition tha’ cyberstate Master herein ta’ feature more lasses (and fur equal time’s sake- lads as well) even iffa thar’ Starry Trek connection is that they had eaten Enter-O’s cereal when thye wuz a kiddie.
But as farrrr as this article goes… haven’t ye’ all been yakkin’ on aboot seein’ what tha’ film looks like? Well, here is bloody someone that appears in tha’ film- so ye’ now know what some o’ tha’ film will feature. That’s news ta’ me , mates.
(Oh, by tha’ by… If I had seen tha’ part o’ her impending wedding, I really woulda worn pants… so sorry, lass.)
Arrrrrrr…
54. Hey BND, ya’ jerkarse! She be married already!
Why dunna ye’ read tha’ bloody article instead o’ gazin’ at tha’ pictures? I mean, just cuz it’s a lovely redheaded lass whose seductively scarlet siren’s call beams ethereally off tha’ page to burn adoring images upon yer mutton-fevered brain… ye’ still can read tha’… tha’… uhhhh… is thar’ an article here?… uhhhhh… sorry BND… I’m tha’ jerkarse… may tha’ Lord herein keep up tha’ good work…
Arrrrrr…
#46. wes you are probly right. But you never know what will happen. Hopefully we will get some good surprises.
Maybe this is the chick that Kirk bangs in order to “beat” the Kobayashi Maru scenario.
#53
I still don’t see anything funny about that. I did find it remarkably ignorant.
Oooh! I got it! It’s funny because #15 still lives in his mom’s basement and those pictures of Rachel Nichols is as close to a girl as he will ever get.
Funny.
Since when are Orion women cadets in Starfleet? In “The Menagerie” they were described as being like “wild animals”.
@57
XD , i thought it was just a stupid rumour kirk got someone else ot help him past the Koboayashi Maru , but yes typical kirk turns a no win scenario , into getting off with a good looking girl .
@51 “little blonde lab technician” was what gary mitchell said , so maybe there will be even more good looking girls in the movie
60# Yes you are of course correct, I knew I should have googled that quote before putting forth my bold theory!
Oh dear! People boo-hooing about a little story about one of the actresses in the film. These little stories are just as relevant to creating a buzz for the film as big revelatory articles.
They’re fun and utterly harmless, so rather than bitching, if you don’t like the article, go somewhere else – perhaps Heat, OK or Chat where you get really in-depth articles. ;)
Grow up and stop moaning guys! If Star Trek’s going back to the mainstream, there will be far less substantial articles than this one in the future!
Oh and even if Orion women all do have black hair, I’m sure hair dye isn’t illegal in the 24th century!!! :)
#52 – My definition of “substantial” would be “the antonym of pretty much every comment made in your post and that of #62.”
Oh, and #52, why are you in such a surly mood these days?
Now this is what Trek needs!! Pretty girls in uniforms boots and miniskirts!
#65 – Now that much is true, and should get anyone out of a surly mood. Me included! :)
#44: If you can’t get the real cast don’t do it at all….lessee, can we bring the dead ones back as zombies? That’d be an interesting film, alright. BND, my friend, if you’re watching…please write the script forthwith.
#52 & #62 – In looking at my posts #63 & #64, I apologize to both of you. My comments were uncalled for and not in keeping with Star Trek’s vision of the future. We are all entitled to our opinions. I’m sorry that I tried to stomp on both of yours. I only have the right to take my own inventory — not yours. I am sorry for my ungentlemanly behavior to each of you and ask your forgiveness. Diversity makes the world go round, and I apologize for attempting to denigrate your opinions. Peace.
Look man, I ‘aint trying to be surly. I just sometimes get down on ridiculous statements like nobody caring about a person’s hair or wedding. It is, to me, ignorant. And after a truly, epicly ignorant thread such as the new video from Phase II, I start to think that a vast majority of Star Trek fans are actually mouth breathers and not the supposed “enlightened” fans that they proclaim to be. I say a lot of stupid things, but I really do make an effort not to be blatantly ignorant. I am not above slamming someone I feel is just being a trollish little flamer, though. And I will continue to take issue with those I don’t agree with. But when you come at me with a username like The Enterprise+ William Shatner as Kirk= good movie anyone else=bad!, you are just asking for it. I mean, it begs to be differed. You have no reason to apologize, Brett. And neither do I.
Nah! You guys don’t need to apologise.
Thing is, lot of us enjoy the fluffy articles on here. They don’t change the world as we know it, but they certainly add some colour to it!
I love Star Trek, but I guess I don’t take it as seriously as some people. As far as I’m concerned, it’s only a TV show/movie series (which I happen to like a lot!) I have had people accuse be of not really being a fan, or being a bad fan for saying that. I guess my owning all the DVDs of TOS and having read lots of the books down the years (albeit not much since the early 1990s) counts for nought! ;)
I don’t need or want every thread to be epic and deathly serious, telling us ‘important things!’ I just like a bit of gossip about my original favourite sci-fi show!
I’m with you, Dom.
Al Gore invented the internets so I could have ready access to pictures of hot chicks. And Trek stuff. Near as I can tell, that makes this article dang near perfect.
THX and Dom, very good points — some funny ones, too. And you’re both right that variety is the spice of life. And Anthony and Co. are working hard to bring us news even as Paramount works hard to prevent too much from coming out too soon. Glad that we can genteel-ly agree to disagree on some points.
THX – I was a little unclear about your comment “But when you come at me with a username like The Enterprise+ William Shatner as Kirk= good movie anyone else=bad!, you are just asking for it. I mean, it begs to be differed.” I wasn’t sure if the “you” was meant generically for any poster or if it meant me. I don’t post under any user name, just my own. So, I don’t intentionally mean to “ask for it,” as much as I love discussion and debate. Hope that clears that up.
Perhaps you folks can help me with some definitions that I asked Anthony for in another thread, but to which he did not apparently have time to respond. I am relatively new as a poster, and I’m not 100% certain as to the meanings of terms such as “flaming,” “trolling” or “spamming.” I generally take them to mean don’t pick fights and don’t try to solicit or sell. I welcome correction or clarification of these terms.
As much as you both are very generous in saying I don’t need to apologize, I appreciate that. But I will aim to agree to disagree in more civil and mature fashion in the future. Have a great day, folks.
So, if people disagree in a civilized and mature fashion could that still be categorized as a civil war?
#72
As far as my comment about The Enterprise+ William Shatner as Kirk= good movie anyone else=bad!, take a look at comments #45, #44, and #38. That is the poster’s username. I found the basic logic to his/her username to be flawed, and I pointed that out in my responses to him/her.
The term “flaming” refers to someone who enters an online discussion and makes inflammatory remarks just to start arguments. “Spamming” is making multiple consecutive posts that basically say the same thing, sort of like not letting anyone else say anything. You’re definition of “trolling” is pretty accurate.
12. capt mike –
“i wonder who will Play Carol Marcus. I also wonder who will play Kirks nemisis at the acedamy Finnigan. Then theres kirks old flame Ruth from the episode shore leave. Then What about Dr Janice Lester. Who would play her. Anyone have any ideas.”
If any of those characters even makes a cameo it’ll be a surprise. No one ever said any of them are in the movie. There’s no reason in the world that every person ever mentioned as knowing Kirk in his Academy days has to appear. Why should they? If it served the story maybe, otherwise its just fanwanking.
#44—”My username means that other than the TOS movies none of the other trek movies were good and this recasting sucks, you must move forward not back when it comes to Trek….”
If none but the original movies were good (and I agree, at least 5 of the 6), how do you justify saying that you can only move forward when it comes to Trek. That seems a bit puzzling, since we seem to agree that moving “forward” with Trek movies has yet to do any good.
I have been waiting for nearly two decades for those fantastic characters to be recast and for Star Trek to return to the more romantic 23rd Century. I will be there opening day with bells on…
Thanks Izbot. I totally missed that rehashing of the “How many characters from Kirk’s past that appeared in only one episode can we cram into this new movie?” game.
I’ll put in my votes for Harry Mudd, Nurse Chapel’s robot boyfriend, T’Pring, the lawyer gal that used to date Kirk but is now prosecuting him in “Court Martial”, Sam Kirk’s wife and kid, the two dudes working the transporter in WNMHGB, and all the background characters played by Billy Blackburn.
It can be like a Monty Python sketch.
KIRK: Spock, who the hell are all these people?
SPOCK: I needed to bring them here from various points in your life, captain, in order to fix the timeline.
KIRK: But really, where are we going to put all of them? We weren’t expecting to take all these characters on this mission.
TORQUEMADA: No one expects the Spanish Inquisition!
“let’s face it, you can’t TORQUEMADA anything!”
One of my favourite Mel Brooks lines!

“Thanks Izbot. I totally missed that rehashing of the “How many characters from Kirk’s past that appeared in only one episode can we cram into this new movie?” game. ”
Yeah I just don’t see how there’s room for a *story* in there if all you’re doing is trying to connect all these (to non-hardcore fans) obscure references together. Even to me, an avowed hardcore fan, that sounds boring. Do I *have* to see who the “blonde lab technician” Kirk nearly married was? Hardly. We’ve all got our suspicions and theories on that, why would we *need* to have it spelled out? Who knows? Coulda been someone we never even heard of before. Better, who cares? Its a minor mystery.
#73- I suppose it could if you view disagreement in terms of war.
THX – Thanks for clearing up those terms for me. I appreciate it.
Good Lord! People! We haven’t even mentioned Kodos the Executioner on this thread! Who’s gonna play Kodos?? If he’s not in the film I will boycott it etc etc!! And Hoshi Sato! Who’s gonna play her?! I saw in teeny tiny print on a viewscreen in the 2-part Mirror Universe ENT episodes a line that says Hoshi was there too and was executed by Kodos!! WHO WILL PLAY SENIOR CITIZEN HOSHI SATO?!?! It’s canon, people! Look it up!
#73 – I suppose the oxymoron of a civil war could only be drummed up by those caught up in another oxymoron: military intelligence.
#83
Yeah, like jumbo shrimp!
#84 – Yeah, like that. R.I.P. George Carlin.
Rachel Nichols I think I love you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just to show you what kind of deplorable human being I am, when I learned that she dyed her hair red to play an Orion dancer, all I could think was, “Do cuffs and collar match?”
#84 – Also, in some people’s opinion (although I happen to like a good deal of it meself), another oxymoron: British cuisine.
