Great Links: Middleman’s Mirror, Gates’ Meld, Klingon’s Car, Trek’s One-Liner + more September 4, 2008

by Anthony Pascale , Filed under: Great Links , trackback

It’s quiet out on the interweb this week…too quiet. But The Great Links still finds Star Trek wherever it looks and so we got evil Middlemen with goatees, Star Trek at the Emmys, Bill Gates melding with Trek, a webcomic visiting Star Trek The Experience, James Doohan getting some respect, a Klingon car, a Spock scarecrow, and more.

Middleman goes Mirror
At the beginning of the summer TrekMovie reported on the premiere of The Middleman, a new offbeat genre show on ABC Family which has TNG and DS9 writer/producer Hans Beimler as a co-executive producer. The show is fun and rife with pop culture references and in the series finale, the went deep in Trek territory as the hero of the show (Wendy Watson, Middleman in training) was thrust into an alternative universe where everyone had a beard…here are some clips (also thrown in is a clip of a Star Trek TMP reference from last week’s episode).

Will Star Trek’s memorable lines make the Emmys?
Recently TrekMovie reported that the upcoming Emmy Awards show was going to feature ‘TV’s most memorable moments’ (based on Internet voting) and a scene from Star Trek was one of the options (voting is still open by the way). Now THR is reporting the Emmy’s will also be celebrating ‘TV’s most memorable lines,’ but this time they are not opening up the selection to the public, but THR speculates Trek may also be included:

The lines, which may include "Good night, John Boy" or "Live long and prosper," will be recited by such TV stars as Alec Baldwin, William Baldwin, Ricky Gervais, Kelsey Grammer, Heidi Klum, Denis Leary, Helen Mirren, Jeremy Piven, Doris Roberts, William Shatner, James Spader and Donald Trump during the ceremony.

So if they do use Star Trek’s Vulcan greeting, should it be Shatner doing it? TrekMovie thinks they should have Trump cite "live long and prosper" and have Shatner do "your’re fired!" We will find out during the show, which airs from 8-11 p.m. Sept. 21 on ABC

Live long and, your’re fired!

MicroMeld
Tired of being beaten up by those "I’m a Mac and I’m a PC" commercials, Microsoft is launching a a multi-million dollar campaign starring Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates. A surprisingly unfunny promo video for this campaign is now online, however it does have an oblique Star Trek reference, listen closely.

Picture of the week: Klingon Car
A highlight of the annual Dragon*Con is the parade, with folks in genre costumes walking the streets of Atlanta. As per usual, there were lots of folks in Trek costumes, but this year also included a very special car in costume. (more pics at BrideOfChuckie7’s Flickr page)

Comics of the week: ‘Least I Could Do’ Goodbye to ST: The Experience
For the second week in a row we have a web comic that boldly goes to Trek references, in fact the ‘Least I Could Do’ web strip devoted over a week to a visit with Star Trek The Experience. CLICK to check it out the first (then click ‘next’ to go progress through the Trek related comics)

Star Trek, still funny after all these years

Our pals at io9 are also sad to see Star Trek The Experience go, but they have put together a nice list of alternative ’scifi’ destinations to fill the gap.

Quotes of the week: Respect The Doohan!

I grew up in the golden age of TV reruns and I like to say I got my dialects that way. I got my Scottish from Scotty on Star Trek, my French from LaBeau on Hogan’s Heroes and stuff like that.

- veteran voice actor Tom Kane (Yoda in The Clone Wars) [Animation Magazine]

If anyone asks you who your favourite actor on Star Trek is, say “James Doohan,” or risk getting a caber tossed at your noggin.

- Calgary Herald ‘To Do List’ column,
promoting last weekend’s Calgary Highland Games [Canada.com]

Video of the week: Montgomery Scott in the 24th Century
Continuing a bit of a Doohan theme, here is another great video from our friend Kelvington, giving the old Buck Rogers in the 25th Century opening credits a wee bit of the ol’ Scottish engineer treatment.

2. Sir Martman - September 4, 2008

I wonder what my wife would say if I came home with a Klingon Muscle Cruiser.

:-)

3. Anthony Pascale - September 4, 2008

I usually delete ‘first’ posts, but that was kind of funny and it is just Great Links so who cares?

4. Thomas - September 5, 2008

Anthony,

I’m not sure if you’ve posted this in the past, but here’s a link to an extremely well done, extremely funny Star Trek TNG rap. Definitely NSFW. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClP8n6asn3w . Figured it fall under “great links”

7. DJT - September 5, 2008

‘”The sci-fi series from the sixties starring the great George Takei?!”

“It is an evil universe”

OMG-ROTFGLOL.

“Actually, three things.”

ha!

Natalie Morales - reminds me of both Amanda Peet and Rosario Dawson - only she is much hotter.

8. Wesley's bunkmate - September 5, 2008

I loved the Doctor Who reference in The Middleman too. Gotta check out that show.

9. Cervantes - September 5, 2008

….JUST Great Links?

This is one of the greatest things on this whole site!

btw, that ‘Klingon’ car is one of the most ridiculous Trek-related things I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a few.

10. BK613 - September 5, 2008

In fairness to the San Diego Reader, Josh Board’s blog quotes the list from here

http://listverse.com/movies/top-10-overrated-movies/

and then comments on it. Mr. Board comment on TVH:

“I can’t comment on this. I’ve only seen a few Trek films, and this wasn’t one of them. I remember the commercials looked good, although I was a teenager. ”

FYI (I guess someone failed to read TFA, :-D)

11. The Gorn Identity - September 5, 2008

Love the Buck Rogers/Scotty video. The William Conrad imitation was pretty funny.

12. shinzon of TARDIS xd - September 5, 2008

the klingon car: from the lost episode of the dukes of hazzard where bo and luke get cooter to make the general lee look like a klingon ship for a star trek convention XD

13. CmdrR - September 5, 2008

Been too long since we had Friday night mini-movies.
Thanks Rick!
Does that mean Data is Twiki? “biddeebiddeebiddee”

14. CmdrR - September 5, 2008

Famous TV lines these celebs SHOULD read:

Alec Baldwin: “I know nothing!” (Sgt. Schultz)
William Baldwin: “Mom always liked you best” (Tommy Smothers)
Ricky Gervais: “Tastes great! Less filling!”
Kelsey Grammer: “Courage!”
Heidi Klum: “Uh-oh, better get Macco.” (or any body work pitch line)
Denis Leary: “D’oh!” (Homer Simpson)
Helen Mirren: “Kiss my grits.” (Flo)
Jeremy Piven: “Who am I? What am I doing here?” (Adm. Stockdale)
Doris Roberts: “Sock it to me”
William Shatner: “Promise!”
James Spader: “Denny Crane” (Denny Crane)
Donald Trump: “I’m not a crook …” (Richard Nixon)

15. Lou - September 5, 2008

what is with that car?!

turning a ghetto cruiser into a D7? and doing a crappy job at it, no less!!

And I thought I was a nerd, but damn! I hope they’re embarrassed because I sure as hell would be if I knew someone that did that. I mean, they didn’t even use a good car for it. absurdity at its dumbest.

16. The Doc - September 5, 2008

The Middleman reference “Lethbridge Stewart”! LOL! Great Doctor Who reference!

The Scotty video was great too!

17. Marshall McMellon - September 5, 2008

#15

LOL!!!

18. The Doc - September 5, 2008

This is Twiki, your drone! LOL!

19. AJ - September 5, 2008

That “multi-million dollar” Microsoft campaign must be salaries only. What a terrible advertisement!

20. Decker's Stubble - September 5, 2008

14 - no way, man, that’s a D6 for sure! No wait, you’re right, it’s just a piece of crap.

I have an aging Chevy Prizm. Perhaps I too can purchase some house paint and some odds and ends from Hobby Lobby and make my own ST Car. Perhaps a shuttle?

21. Decker's Stubble - September 5, 2008

Ah!! Sorry, I meant 15.

22. Montel - September 5, 2008

Definitely a D6 - it only has 2 doors.

I have to say that STIV really is the most overrated Trek film. It is more reminiscent of the old Adam West “Batman” series than any other Trek. I don’t care how much box office $$ it made - I think that was because it was a Trek movie that people who didn’t watch ST could laugh at.

23. cellojammer - September 5, 2008

I think that muscle car was **SUPPOSED** to be cheezy. As such, I hereby pronounce it WAY KEWELL!!

8^D

24. Ryan T. Riddle - September 5, 2008

I’m originally from San Diego and I to agree that the San Diego Reader is an overrated rag that tries to be hip, indie and alternative but fails miserably short in comparison to the L.A. Weekly and O.C. Weekly. It still contains that air of conservatism that reeks off the media in that mostly Republican city.

Beautiful city, however. Nice people. Good weather. Media sucks. I know I used to work for it.

Besides, the guy who “reported” on the list hadn’t even seen half the movies on the list. You’d think he’d at least youtube them to get the flavor of what the hell he was “reporting” on. Hot air. Typical of the San Diego Reader.

25. Ryan T. Riddle - September 5, 2008

^Oh, and Montgomery Scott in the 24th Century is brilliant! Pure genius.

26. capt mike - September 5, 2008

Ok. I loved the Scotty in the 24th century. It was funny and Enjoyable. I kinda liked the microsoft commercial with gates and Seinfield. I thought it was kinda funny. The great George takei. Now thats evil. But i had a great Idea. What about a Trek Series but set in the Alternate universe but set in 2008 I think that would be kinda kool. Imagine the possiblilities. The U.S as the bad guys bent on Dominationg Earth and how Earth became the Great Terren Empire. I think that would be a kool Show. What does everyone else think.

27. doubting thomas - September 5, 2008

heh. lethbridge-stewart.

28. capt mike - September 5, 2008

Long Live The Terran Empire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

29. Nelson - September 5, 2008

But Jerry always had a new Mac every season on Seinfeld……

30. Tango - September 5, 2008

Could Tiggie be the great batman-like robot that Star Trek needs?

31. Tango - September 5, 2008

Twiggie

32. Tango - September 5, 2008

Twiki?

33. Kayla Iacovino - September 5, 2008

The James Doohan video is cracking me up!

34. The Underpants Monster - September 5, 2008

Count me in on the love for “Great Links.” It shows us over and over that Star Trek remains relevant and interesting to tons of fun and creative people all over the world.

***

Shouldn’t that be “Klingon Kar,” with a “k?”

***

“I grew up in the golden age of TV reruns and I like to say I got my dialects that way.”

Heehee. I’ve played English and German characters onstage, and the voices were total ripoffs of Remington Steele and Colonel Klink.

35. helenofpeel - September 5, 2008

Loved the Scotty in the 24th Century stuff!

36. BK613 - September 5, 2008

In 1996, Khan and the last of the Peacefuls launch for the stars in the S.S. Rainbow Warrior. Fearing that public acknowledgment of the departure would undermine its image of power and prestige, the Terran Empire’s propaganda machine stages a very visible explosion in the skies over Asia, claiming it to be the fate of the Peacefuls. It is therefore never revealed to the general population that eighty or so genetically-enhanced freethinkers had escaped the iron-fist of the Terran Empire.

:-D

37. Beam Me Up - September 5, 2008

I’m sorry but that car looks nothing like a klingon ship

38. capt Mike - September 5, 2008

#36. You are correct. The Terran Empire will do what ever it needs to do to ensure the Empire will long live and rule the Galaxy. Long Live the Terran Empire.

39. JP - September 5, 2008

I would so drive that Klingon car.

40. NCC-73515 - September 5, 2008

I love the two betleHpu’ on the back of that car!

41. Robert Bernardo - September 5, 2008

Looks like the Klingons fancy 1971 Ford Torinos. Cars for warriors!

42. NC Trek Fan - September 5, 2008

The 1971 Ford Torino. A warrior’s car!!!!
Today is a good day to drive.

What would the Federation drive? GTO, Challenger, Camaro?

I say a 1966 Shelby Mustang (White, fastback).

43. Izbot - September 6, 2008

Oh my dear god that car! How the #$%@ do you parallel park that thing?!

44. Robert Bernardo - September 6, 2008

The Scotty video was so great that I had to capture it and save it to the computer. From the same video author, I grabbed his Star Trek: 1969 video. How very Gerry Anderson!

45. Robert Bernardo - September 6, 2008

Oops, I misremembered. The video is “Space: 1969 in the Futura”.
