#82 Vulcan has no moon, but a sister planet, T'Kuht. T'Kuht has a moon, called T'Rukhemai.

The abusive uncle line sounds like something stolen from one of those dreadful 'true life' films that usually star Melissa Gilbert.

"I play Captain Kirk’s alcoholic, abusive uncle when he’s a kid, and I treat him very badly, which forces him to go off and do what he does.."

I sincerely hope this isn't in the film.

136: "Peace on earth, the end of poverty and disease, but we still have child abuse? Hmm…"

Peace on earth, no disease and poverty... AND we still have personal freedom, but along with that goes the possibility to make some bad choices and so become a bad person.
But on the other hand you would think on the utopian Earth of Star Trek, the kind of demeanor the uncle is (supposedly) displaying will not go unnoticed and unremedied. So yes, this stuff seems kind of out of place in Trek.

So, is his uncle related to George or Winona?

And why does he need an evil anything to run off and join starfleet? Isn't the fact that his old man was in it enough for inspiration?

Evil uncle, evil stepmother. This is such a cliche for a storyline. It's as weak as a crazy scientist or an overly dorky agent in the secret goverment agency.

I honestly hope this is done well. But as of now, I gotta bad feelin' about this.

I would rather see an exploration of Kirk's childhood experiences at the hands of Kodos and his evil followers as an impetus to his future knight-in-shining-armour obsession. His TOS character is concerned first with his ship (possibly a need to boldly go as did his father), and secondly to see that justice is served for all. Conscience of the King provided such a haunting backdrop for Kirk's psychology, it seems a shame to substitute that storyline opportunity (possibly seeing young Kirk threatened with death and/or saving the lives of others, etc.) with drunken family-member abuse. We will see in May '09.

Shat could have pulled off the role if he had also pulled off his rug. Then there would have been absolutely n identification with James Kirk.

I'd love to see both Shatner and Burt Reynolds chuck the ego and go for it sans toupee. I heard that Reynolds was up for the idea once. Did he ever actually do it? Anyone know?

The studio suits' thinking is that a 2.5 - 3 hour movie will get one less showing per day in each theater. 2 hours is ideal.
When the studios know they have a bomb on their hands, they cut it to 90 minutes or less to get even one more showing in before word of mouth gets out & totally kills it [see Superman IV- no, wait- on second thought, don't.]

Agreed Abrams runs hot & cold- I loved Cloverfield [yeah, yeah, he didn't direct it] & MI3, but not much of his TV work, and you hit the nail I was fumbling around for dead on the head. Let anyone with heavy involvement in any project give us the final cut- not the suits.
