Agree, Mere Mortals is excellent. Highly recommended, period.

Chapter 9, which focuses on the exile of Hernandez and what’s left of her crew among the Caeliar, is the most powerful, gripping and heartbreaking material I’ve come across in Trek fiction.

For the Borg-phobis among us: Yes, the actions of the Borg are central to this novel, but those actions take place off stage almost entirely. This is a book about what the Federation, it’s allies, and it’s enemies do in response to an unprecedented Borg threat.

And finally…”with Deanna Troi learning firsthand just how badly an unadvised pregnancy can bite.”

I’ve complained often about the recent TNG novels. the last one I read, “The Buried Age” was rather odd and ultimately unsatisfying. However, I seem to read only good things about this series, other than the fact that it once again, centers around the Borg.

But as many good reviews I’ve heard, I might have to at least give this series a chance.
