Then they would be Blu-ray players, wouldn’t they?
That’s like dictating all CD players play DVDs. BD is an industry standard, much as DVD was in 1998.

They have sold about 1 million copies of “Iron Man”. “The Dark Knight” is shipping 1 million copies to *start* with. BD is actually doing better than DVD was at the same point in its lifetime (1998). Where exactly are you reading the underachiever articles? I can tell you they are not *industry* articles like those in Variety or Video Business.

In bad economic times people stay home and…watch movies.

The main reason for Blu-ray (BD) is for the better quality. These films need major restoration: the picture quality was fairly weak when aired on the HD channels over the past few years. Supposedly Paramount has remastered them from scratch and given them a cleaning.

I don’t care about additional extras or meaningless director’s cuts (I want the ORIGINAL versions!). Having them cleaned up and on BD is more than enough for a lot of us.

I don’t know you SIMON, but I have every movie on DVD since years. Blue-Ray is no a cheap buisness and if Paramount wants my money, they better convince me with something to buy the Blue-Ray-versions, because I’m not throwning my DVDs away only for some better quality.

Am I the only one that gets tired of paying for the same stuff over and over again. How many of us here had Trek on VHS, Laserdisc, DVD (twice for both TOS and the films + the redone TOS) and now BR?

And every time they soak us for a price tag much higher than comparable products. I’ve been appalled at the price of the Special Edition releases (of course I was also appalled at the price of the first DVD TV releases and the price of the more recent yellow, red and blue case DVDs).

If the new flicks go all BR, I’ll wait until they’re in the cheap bin in three or four years (like the current SE movie DVDs are) before I bother picking them up. And believe me, I love my Trek flicks, but I’m just tired of paying above-average prices for content I’ve owned in like 5 formats already…

i heard that normal dvds get upgraded to better picture/sound quality when u play them on blu ray players? (but obviously not to blu ray disc dvd standard)

I’m going Blu this month.
I look forward to buying all eleven movies next year, and hopefully CBS will release all three seasons of TOS remastered to tie-in with the new movie (I can’t imagine them passing up the marketing opportunity)
Hopefully Enterprise will follow in 2010 as it is already HD ready.

As for TNG, DS9, VOY, I will only ever get those on Blu-Ray if they upgrade the visual effects. I don’t see any point otherwise. The existing visuals just won’t hold up in hi-def

I know it’s been discussed here before, but TNG, DS9 and VOY were all edited on video, meaniong the endproduct is SD quality, and to have those in HiDefn you’de have to go back to the original shot film, re-edit and re-apply the special effects. Cost of this would be huge, but any other way of putting these series on Blu-ray would be software up-converting of the SD-video. Wich is what your DVD player van do on-the-fly with your DVD’s.

Izbot, Paramount is getting bids for TNG from LA post houses, a major one of which a friend of mine runs. So, stop all this nay-saying. TNG is up next and will be re-mastered, followed by the rest.

I won’t be upgrading to this format since TNG, DS9 and VOY will always look like crap thanks to their conversions to video. It’s been discussed before that these three shows will likely not be given the Remastering treatment TOS just received due to the enormous cost and daunting composite work neccessary to accomplish this.
