#92 - you are oh so wrong, my friend. Star Trek was shot on 35mm film.... which has ALWAYS had a resolution over twice that of Blu-Ray. From these masters you can rescan at SD, present HD standards and even higher HD standards than exist now. In effect, a certain level of DOWNSCALING is performed to put it on Blu-Ray. The TOS masters will one day have even a better, higher resolution home HD format than your fancy pants 'Blu-Ray' garnered from them. God, every generation thinks they invented the wheel....huh?

So basically, 35mm has always been HD....it's just the display technology that has had to catch up. Believe it or not, the problem will arise when they attempt to remaster all the MODERN Star Trek incarnations in HD....as it was all edited onto video (but shot on film so I'm told), and the special FX were all shot on video, so they would have to be completely built from scratch. So, ironic as it may seem, TOS will be the only TV Trek incarnation to shine in HD for some time (maybe forever if the others are too costly).

The nexus? lol. IDK.

I was so disappointed in this effort. I felt it really should have been given a bigger budget and a better team.

I think season three is the best season of them all. I own the 2004 versions of seasons 1 & 2, but I WAITED for the release of season 3 on DVD, because I wanted the new CGI remastered version of season 3. I bought it last night at 6:00 pm, and took off of work at the gas station today to watch the whole damn thing. And watch the whole damn thing I did. I am getting ready to watch my favorite episodes of the package now, which will include "Day Of The Dove", "Paradise Syndrome", and of course, my favorite episode of season 3, "Turnabout Intruder"!

What amazes me is....there were 100's of people on here that FLIPPED because CBS-D made the "flame" red instead of blue in "The Paradise Syndrome". Now that it's fixed, where are these 100 people that complained? "Ya might at least say, thank ya!"

#103, i'm inclined to agree with you. I'm convinced it's still Malachi Throne, and used software to check and lowered in pitch, it definitley sounds like him. I also agree that the visuals of the Keeper when telepathic, are subtly longer, whilst dialogue perfectly smooth. The rigidity of the voice is most notable during the scene where the Keeper talks of the "vial containing a nourishing protein complex". I used to think this rigidity was due to being the first time he/she actually spoke (and thus not used to speaking after being telepathic with the rest of his/her race), however I can fully see what you mean now, and the mystery as to the altered voice may have been solved thanks to you!

Not to beat a dead horse, but there is a way that they could have pitched-up Malachi Throne’s voice and adjusted, if not exactly preserved, the duration.

The three semitone increase in the pitch of Throne’s voice amounts to a 20% decrease in its duration. I would bet that the audio engineer just sped the tape up by 20% and had no idea how many semitones that worked out to (3 semitones +16 cents, to be precise).

Anyway, the higher-pitched and faster voice would then drift out of sync and overtake the actresses’ lip movements during long passages of dialog.

But, by cutting the magnetic film soundtrack, you could re-sync the dialog every few words or so using available 1960’s technology. It would be a time consuming process, but it could have been done. They would've needed to re-sync at least a couple of times for each second of dialog.

If you listen the Keeper’s voice, the flow is natural when he/she is using telepathy and lip-sync is not an issue. However, when the Keeper’s lips move, the voice is often much more unnatural and halting, as you would expect if this kind of adjustment had been made. In addition, if you examine the scenes during the telepathy sequences, the visuals of the Keeper tend to run on an odd bit longer than his/her dialog, which is also what you would expect with a 20% increase in speed of the dialog.

Anyway, that’s my theory.

I have all three remastered TOS box sets, and applaud the find job on all they did. If I had one regret, it's that they just didn't take it far enough! So many missed opportunities to broaden the scope of the visuals. For example:

In "Court Martial", a quick exterior cutaway of Enterprise rising out of the planet's atmosphere.

In "The Naked Time", a view of Enterprise slowly descending into the planet's atmosphere

In "The Corbomite Maneuver" and "The Lights of Zetar", exterior views of Enterprise attempting to escape the cube/lights

"The Ultimate Computer" could have benefited from a few closeups of Enterprise phaser beams slicing into the other starship's hulls

Again, this is just Monday morning quarterbacking, and overall I"m very happy with the entire remastering project and wish to offer congratulations. I suspect the producer's timid approach about changes had a lot to do with not wanting to enrage fans.

I vote that the Keeper's voice is Malachi Throne's pitched up.

I offered to be this site's proofreader a long time ago (when the spelling errors were even worse and more frequent), but they never got back to me.

The problem with a remastering project like this is that it will never be perfect. Once you change a few things, people can begin to imagine what else can be changed or what shouldn't have been changed. Personally, I'd like to see those tiny screens on the tricorders showing data of some sort... especially when the characters seem to be getting information from them. At any rate, we all agree this project deserved better than it got. I'm sure it won't be long before we see fan edits remasterings.

It is a shame that these sets are only being released in standard definition. I'm sure a hi-def format will come out soon enough, but really, in the long run I think all physical media is out. We'll just be downloading everything before you know it.
