I'm new to this thing...but I gotta say...is collecting a toy for your shelf really any different than buying a painting for your wall? Either one gives you a little bit of joy depending on what your interests are. I'll probably buy everything and give it a spot on the shelf along with all of the other Playmates and Art Asylum stuff I have.. I just hope they don't keep making a bunch of spocks or kirks... do we really need a seperate figure for every outfit a character wore? Make more electronic ships damn it.

Hey Guys, I'm new to posting on this site but have been visiting the site since it started.

I, for one, am just glad that we have new Star Trek toys to talk about again. Since my days as a kid playing with the galoob TNG figures, I have wished for more of the same size action figures. My wife says I already have enough stuff, but I can't wait for these!

"You are so afraid of being compared to a fictional caricature that you need to insult your fellow fans to assure yourself that you are better than a Simpson stereotype."

This is simply not true. I'm not afraid of anything of that kind. Neither am I comparing you or other fans with the typical Simpsons/Futurama nerd. It's a fact though that many Trek fans out there are behaving like that and that's what scares me.

However, we could talk it over again and again. Maybe I did myself not clear in the short amount of time. Blame me for my mediocre English or for not being patient enough to clarify my position.

I'm aware of the fact that neither the big making of book nor your beloved action figures will help make the world any better. Y' know what? Spend as much money as you like on any kinds of stuff as long as you don't forget your surroundings...

You seem to me like a nice guy and here in Germany it's 3.11h in the morning. I'm tired of arguing with a Star Trek fan like me 8000 or so miles away, who, under other circumstances I would ask out for a couple of drinks (It does not mean that I consider myself defeated yet.)

@ Anthony:
I never intended to appear like a flamer or a troll. Sorry for that.
Keep up the good work.

Can you manage that I accompany you the next time you get invited to a TREK XI screening? Only joking.... of course not!

#108 Yet more dodges. Again you skirt the fact that you are placing your interests in a higher category of "right" than others. We spend money on plastic you send money on glossy paper. Guess what, your interests in big "making of books" don't help the poor in the third world anymore than action figures, and no amount of country name dropping will change that. Merchandising is part of the Engine that keeps any franchise going. You want the "hope" of Star Trek to reach as many people as possible? Then you better hope that all us 35 year old Trek geeks do buy that merchandising in droves or it is going to die for real this time. You are so afraid of being compared to a fictional caricature that you need to insult your fellow fans to assure yourself that you are indeed better than a Simpsons stereotype. Good on ya mate. What ever you need to do to get you through the day. Also please note that these are hardly hour long psychological analysis. These are 5 minute posts at best.

"So I ask you how is your awaiting an art book any different than us awaiting action figures?"

First of all, I will only get the art book if I will enjoy the movie and especially its design (as for what I´ve seen in the trailer, I am quite sure I will ). I simply refuse to jump on something because it´s fan stuff which is different from people just freaking out because of some toys . Second, I am not trying to sound intellectual here - I am going to enjoy a book (and the way it can give me access to the film making process and the story behind the story) much more than some plastic goodies; especially as I am trying to make a living in the same business - maybe not on such a big scale, but I hope it´s going to pay...

"The second quote shows again that you think that unleashing your inner child with action figures etc is in some way inferior..."

I don´t need action figures to enjoy myself, unleash my inner child or to celebrate my fandom of ST. Judging a phenomenon like ST by its merchandise seems a little inappropriate to me, and feels like proving the cliché of the 35-year-old Trekkie, still living in his Mom´s basement (see the SIMPSONS - ST episode for details...). ST deserves better. ST means more to me. Realising the troublesome state of the world it could teach us lessons way more valuable than how to fill our cupboards with collectibles. I've seen an old man walking the streets of Bucharest on his knees (not only because of humility - he simply had no lower legs) begging for a piece of bread, children on the by-passes of Thessaloniki blocking any driving car for a bit of change. This makes me think twice about buying loads of actually useless plastic figures.

PS: A hint from my girlfriend - if you are happily married, why do you spent so much time doing hour-long psychological analysis of other people´s comments?

Haha, I haven't collected figures since my brother and I were fairly small... xD Maybe I'll have to start up again! *^__^* Of course, they'll probably be sitting in a shadowbox where I can just /stare/ at them all day... hehe.

Can't wait 'til we get some images.

So far, looking good for the franchise! ;3
