Alnschloss K’Bentayr I think is more a nod to the alien (forget its name) from the animated series. It is pretty similar and sits in the same spot as the one on the animated series

Certainly not, especially since the notion that interference with the past might result in the creation of an alternate timeline has been in itself ‘canon’ from the earliest episodes of TOS.

“City On The Edge Of Forever”….canon.

“Tommorow Is Yesterday”…canon.

“Assignment: Earth”…canon.

TAS, “Yesteryear”…canon (at least in my opinion).

STXI will also be ‘canon’, which has nothing to do with the “window dressing” of asthetic set designs or the shape of the Enterprise warp nacelles.

I’d say it is returning to that state. It did not start out as being “geeky”.

Star Trek was never a “geeks only” club (although that was its most rabid fanbase during the 1970’s syndication of the series) until the TNG-era, IMO.

TOS and the original films were always more character-driven, and much more mainstream friendly.

While nearly everyone remembers “the one with the whales”, I’m not so sure the average moviegoer could tell you anything about the time Worf got a pimple…

While characters like Picard, Data, and Riker are definitely “geek icons”, Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and Scotty are icons of “popular culture”. There is a difference, to be sure.

I would add ” that occur in a world/universe that is believably real.”

Why?

Because

“Willy Wonka was a story about characters interacting with each other against a back drop of extraordinary circumstances”

works without it.

I want the new movie to be good science fiction and not just fantasy.

IMO of course :-)

Wow over 500+ messages about what is and is not canon. The only thing I ever got out of “what is canon” is the ability to defeat nearly all of my friends singlehandedly in Star Trek trivia.

The look of the ships, people, aliens, devices, environments is all window dressing. I’m curious if the story itself will be any good. Trek was a story about characters interacting with each other against a back drop of extraordinary circumstances.

Very cool indeed… I like the look of this ship, because it looks functional (not overly stylized). When Berman and Co. made the Enterprise for the series “Enterprise,” they should have gone for a look like this USS Kelvin.

JP, I think the turrets are going to be on the Kelvin but not on the Enterprise — a nod of transitioning from ENT to STXI.

Also, FYI, they kind of did put phasers in Star Wars. In Attack of the Clones, the Republick gunships have these laser turrets that fire a continuous beam rather than blaster ‘bolts’, and when I first spotted them I immediately thought that SW decided to incorporate ST style phasers.
