Well if that is the case then it’s so blaringly loud that it seemed out of place in the new editions. Like many other things they did wrong. It evidently served it’s purpose in the original because I never noticed it before then.

117 – nah i could do without trek on tv for a good few years while we have the movie series going solo again! (like 1979 – 1986)…then after the third movie id like to see a new tv series (preferably set post TNG in the 25th century)

Human civilization have advance over the years since the last star trek series or movies.I just love star trek and I hope this will not end here.I’m also hoping that they initiate a new star trek series on TV, life is not worth living without star trek on TV.

Having Ben Burtt work on this film is excellent news! I first realized who he was and what he did for Star Wars when the NPR radio version first aired in 1981. The 30 minute documentary that aired with it went into detail about his work on the two movies (so far at the time) and the radio program. From that point forward I’ve been a huge fan. This has kicked the new Trek movie up another notch for me.

It was such a contrast to the quiet serene scene I had remembered as a kid – when Obi Wan tells Luke about the force, his father and all that. ”

Hate to bust your bubble, guy, but that “shuttlecraft sound” has ALWAYS been in that scene. I noticed it the very first time I saw the film in a theater in ‘77, and even had it on audio cassette tape long before it came out on home video. If you go back and find the first VHS tapes of the movie ( long before ANY digital tweaking was being done ), you will STILL hear that sound effect. The only reason you’re noticing it more now is the newer sound mix is done in 5.1 and the separation and clarity of the tracks makes background sounds far more noticeable.

Anyone pining for the 60’s sound FX needs to have their ears cleaned.

What sounded good from tinny 60’s TVs is much different from multi-thousand watt digital surround systems of today.

A lot of those sound FX were canned library. Watch the 1953 “War of the Worlds” for the photon torpedo sounds and the like.

Ben Burtt is a terrific sound designer. Hopefully he won’t dial down the surrounds and LFE like on “Revenge of the Sith” (the bass from the lightsabers in Episodes I & II are absent) or “Wall*E”. Previous Pixar films were much more holographic in their sound design by Gary Rydstrom.

“Whomever did the sound for Star Trek V”….his name is Mark Mangini and he’s done a LOT of films, including “Star Trek IV”, “Gremlins” (pretty much anything done by Joe Dante), “The Fifth Element” and many others.

Funny, when I first heard the TIE fighters, I wondered why they sounded like the dinosaurs from “Journey to the Center of the Earth” or the “men-fish” from Irwin Allen’s TV series Voyage to the Bottom of the Seas. Simple, Burtt used this canned sound effect and mixed it with another to create something new.

At this point in my life, the Wilhelm bugs the hell out of me. It was even speeded up to a high pitch for when Ben Stiller tosses little half-squat near the end of Tropic Thunder.

When they were making Star Wars, Burtt went on a walkabout to find and record new sounds. Thirty years later, I think he needs to get his Nike’s on again and put some new material in the sound bank. After all this time, many of his iconic sounds are re-used so often as to be a distraction.
