First Look At Playmates Star Trek Toys Packaging [UPDATED]

Recently we broke down the full first wave of Playmates toys and figures for the new Star Trek movie with details and photos (see article). Today, courtesy of Japanese toy sites, we are getting the first glimpses of the packaging for the Playmates Trek line.

Originally a few of these images were found at Japanese toy site Hobbyworld, now thanks to a TrekMovie reader from Japan we can now see the full set of large images from Japanese toy distributor HotToys. TrekMovie has also confirmed that the packing seen below is the global packaging, and not just in Japan.

Hashimemashite dozu Star Trekku!!!

These look great! Love the big E!

Nice packaging.
Altho I’ll probably hold out for a more detailed Enterprise

Considering the wonderful TOS color scheme being used in the marketing, these packages are dull.

why does the delta shield look so mis-shapen?

Im getting them

ooooo, verrry niiiiiiiiice

#4 “why does the delta shield look so mis-shapen?”

That was my first thought!! Hmm…

Here is a slightly higher resolution view of the Enterprise packaging…

Far out.

How is that Spock? The rest looks good.

it also seems strange that they have been pretty consistent in using the typeface from TOS in all marketing materials, but used a completely different font for toy packaging. i know it’s probably a different set of people in charge of designing the packaging at playmates, but you’d think they wouldn’t want to look like a bad knockoff. hopefully these are just the japanese versions of the packaging.

The Enterprise IS ugly, but I’ll live!

#12 … Yeah, this packaging is rather generic and blah. You’d think with something marketed towards kids, the bright yellow/blue/red would be more eye catching. Oh well. Spock Prime looks cool.

I’m sure the typeface is different in Japan. Keep in mind, Trek is NOT very familiar or popular in a lot of other countries. I bet TOS typeface is used here (and the UK and Canada) because of how recognizable it is. In Japan? Maybe not so much. Trek may not be very popular there.

This may or may not have been covered already, but does anyone know, or has anyone seen anything about an Enterprise model kit like a Polar Lights type?

#15, I believe it’s more an optical incompatibility with the Hiragana and Katakana typesets. They’d likely clash with the STar Trek font optically…

The new Enterprise has some pretty curves and angles. We may like it or not, but it’s an original take.

#16

Last I heard, Polar Lights does not have the rights to the new Star Trek film yet in regards to model kits. I hope someone makes models of them though, I want a model of the Enterprise and the Kelvin.

I never realized that he Bussard Collectors on the new E weren’t red. It’ll take some getting used to I think.

I like the packaging…it has a nice, clean look to it.

I like the shape of the packaging but the color is rather dull as compared to what AA/Diamond Select has going on.

– Communicator
– Tricorder
– Phaser

Will be mine.

#20 – exactly what I was just thinking.

If the toys accurately reflect the movie ship, all those blue lights are a bit repetitive. I’d prefer red on the bussards any day, to offset all the other blue lights.

Hi, I’m in Japan.

Japanese official distributor is Hot Toys Japan.
Its site has released Star Trek pages with all (3.75 and playsets) photos a few days ago.

This is not the packaging. Probably a poster or a press image.

This is.

Now I notice a mysterious ‘ship’ in the bridge playset image.
http://www.hottoys.jp/products/products_images/big/3-75_bridge_big.jpg
Is it Narada?

The Enterprise is pretty ugly.

How is it we see packaging from Japan and Star Trek blu-ray from Norway and nothing from North America (sans mexico)?

Even if you think the new Enterprise is ugly or not, I think Mr. Abrams people picked the worst angle and ugliest picture they could find of the ship for the first image released.
After seeing the new Enterprise from other angles it’s really starting to grow on me.

Can’t wait for May!

Oh wow. I love the Enterprise, especially the nacelles. It’s new and nostalgic all in one. Plus I want the Kirk figure. Got to save up for these. :]

Blue bussard collectors! Finally! The first thing I really love about this new ship.

I don’t care what people think of the.. ahem… what I’d call “refitted” Enterprise (NCC – 1701). I think it looks pretty dang awesome in that particular photograph. The figures look rather good, too. I haven’t collected figures since I was young, (Okay, I’m STILL young… 16…) but I will definitely have to look into investing in a couple of those beauties.

How bizzare.
Actually, I see how Ryan Church had to go a certain route to KEEP the E from looking too much like Gabe’s. #29- Yes- they really picked a horribly distorted angle.

Nobody loves Trek toys more than me, but i have to say the quality isn’t great.

From those angles the E really looks awful. All bent, distorted and out of proportion. Still it’s just a playmate toy. Maybe a good one will be released some time.

Love the “Think logical. Be trek” on the Enterprise box top right.

At a distance the kirk figure looks almost like archer. I think the packaging looks good, it looks serious, and things in japan seem to either have ultra goofy packaging or ultra serious, and I dont think star trek would sell well with a bunch of little anime people smiling on the boxes.

#35

We can only hope.

Judging by the direction of the speed lines coming off the ship, the nacelles seem to be on a different trajectory than the rest of the Enterprise!

these look really nice! I am digging the ship! Poor Spock doesn’t look much like himself though…

COOLEST ENTERPRISE EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

What’s the deal with the Communicator?

I thought I had heard rumors that the top (where the UFP logo appears in these images) would have lenticular stickers of the crew… Are they inside the HAL eye ball bit or has this rumor now officially been debunked?

I doubt the Enterprise’s warp drive leaves TMP-style disco tracers like the packaging indicates, so it’s possible some of the blue light effects on the packaging are misleading.

God, they’re amazing! Action figures have always been my favorite collectible.

Can someone translate the text? Must be technical data…

Nit pick:

The Delta shield on the packaging is rather “soft”, IMO. It should have sharper points.

Also, It looks like the communicator comes with a holster! Cool.

@26…

Yes, Ateban, that is the Narada in all her beauty…

48 – Very cool indeed.

I think I’ll pre-order these for Comic-Con and fun.
