CBS & Paramount Announce First Star Trek Blu-ray sets – TOS S1 & All TOS movies coming April/May [UPDATED]

Today CBS and Paramount made official what we have been reporting for months, for the first time ever, Star Trek is coming to Blu-ray in 2009. CBS announced a Blu-ray set for the first season of TOS and Paramount announced all the TOS era movies are coming to Blu-ray, all to be released this Spring. TrekMovie and DigitalBits.com have worked together to bring you all the info on the new sets, see below for full details.

Star Trek on Blu-ray and DVD in 2009
CBS and Paramount announced a total of four new sets for 2009:

  • Star Trek The Original Series Season One [Blu-ray on April 28]
  • Star Trek Original Motion Picture Collection (TMP – ST:VI) [Blu-ray on May 12]
  • Star Trek Motion Picture Trilogy (ST:II, ST:III, ST:IV) [Blu-ray on May 12]
  • Star Trek Motion Picture Trilogy (ST:II, ST:III, ST:IV) [DVD on May 12]

The TOS Season One set is essentially the Blu-ray version of HD-DVD TOS Season One (Remastered) set released in November 2007 (see TrekMovie review), but with the added benefit of allowing you to watch with the new CGI effects or the original 1960s effects.

Both new movie sets feature HD remasters of the theatrical versions of the six films with the TOS crew (Kirk, Spock, etc). Both movie sets also feature a number of new special features in HD, with the ‘Motion Picture Collection’ containing more special Blu-ray functions, and many of the the special features from the previous DVD releases. Each film (on both movie sets) has a new ‘superfan’ commentary from the likes of Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman, Ira Steven Behr, Manny Coto, Judith & Garflield Reeves Stevens, and many more.

Full details and box art on each set below.

STAR TREK® – THE ORIGINAL SERIES – SEASON ONE BLU-RAY
[April 28 – $118.00 US / $136.00 Canada]

Star Trek’s first foray on Blu-ray fitting starts with the first season of Star Trek The Original Series on a seven disc set, including all 29 first season episodes and loads of special features. The first season Blu-ray release features ‘seamless branching’ technology that finally provides viewers the ability to see each remastered episode with either the newly enhanced digital effects or the original special effects. You can also choose to listen to the newly enhanced soundtrack (7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio) or the original one (in glorious mono!).

As part of the special features, six episodes feature “Starfleet Access” bonus content, which provides special pop-up trivia and picture-in-picture video commentaries. The set also includes an interactive tour of the starship Enterprise, Billy Blackburn’s rare on-set home movie footage, a featurette on the Remastered project, and much more. All of these features were on The hybrid HD-DVD/DVD release in 2007 (the ‘Starfleet Access’ feature for “Galileo Seven” was dropped to make room for other features). However, the set does not appear to include some of the features that were on the DVD side of the HD-DVD/DVD release, including the History channel special Beyond the Final Frontier and the ‘Trek Connections’ featurette. Like the HD-DVD release, the set also includes almost all the special features available on the standard DVD set released in 2004, with the notable exception of the ‘Red Shirt Diaries’ Easter Eggs (which weren’t on the HD-DVD set either). The Okuda text commentaries from the 2004 DVD set are also not included (which wasn’t on the HD DVD release either), but the Okudas participated in the “Starfleet Access” features.

It is also worth noting that this set is retailing for almost half of what the HD-DVD set was original sold for. Plus there is a collectible bonus of a free exclusive Sulu action figure from Diamond Select Toys (fans pay only shipping and handling charges). All in all this set looks to be exactly what fans have been asking for since the Star Trek Remastered project started in 2006.

STAR TREK®: THE ORIGINAL SERIES SEASON ONE is a seven disc set presented in the original 4:3 aspect ratio with English 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, English Original 2.0 Mono, Spanish 2.0 Mono and French 2.0 Mono sound. STAR TREK: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE COLLECTION BLU-RAY
[May 12 – $104.99]

The ‘Original Motion Picture’ Blu-ray collection includes the first six “Star Trek” films, which have been digitally remastered in high definition. All the new Blu-ray transfers are based on the original theatrical releases. With the exception of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, the previously released first DVD versions of each film were the ‘theatrical versions’ followed by a second ‘special edition’. And in the case of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, there was only a single ‘Directors’ version released on DVD. Special care has been given to the Blu-ray version of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, which has been ‘fully restored’ in a process similar to Paramount’s recent Blu-ray edition of The Godfather. Director Nicholas Meyer tells us that the Wrath of Khan negative “was in terrible shape” which is why it needed extensive restoration. All six films have new 7.1 Dolby TrueHD audio.

Each film has a brand new commentary track from noted experts and Star Trek fans, in addition to commentaries from the previous release (except for TMP, which only has the new commentary). The set has a total of over 14 hours of special features, including 2 ½ hours of all-new material. Each film has a number of brand new special featurettes in HD, plus a ‘Library Computer’ function (Blu-ray’s Java function for additional pop-up trivia and information), and a ‘Star Trek IQ’ link to BD-Live. The new set contains almost all the extra features from the previous 2-disk special DVD editions of each film, except for the Okuda text commentaries (superseded by the new ‘Library Computer’ feature which also involves the Okudas). There are also three special features on the Star Trek: The Motion Picture Director’s Edition DVD, that aren’t in the new set (but maybe those will be in a possible future Blu-ray TMP Director’s Edition).

The collection also includes a bonus disc entitled “Star Trek: The Captains’ Summit” that features a 70-minute exclusive round table discussion hosted by Whoopi Goldberg in which William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Frakes share candid moments and intimate details about life on the set.

The STAR TREK: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE COLLECTION Blu-ray discs are presented in 1080p high definition with English 7.1 Dolby TrueHD, French and Spanish audio and English, English SDH, French, Spanish & Portuguese subtitles.

More details to come
The above article contains some additional information given to TrekMovie and Digital Bits beyond the press release being sent out, but there is clearly a lot of more in-depth information about these exciting new releases. We will be doing follow-up articles on both the TOS and movie releases, so stay tuned.

More Trek Blu-ray and DVD releases in 2009
These sets are just the Spring releases that Paramount and CBS are officially announcing, however TrekMovie and Digital Bits sources have confirmed additional titles for 2009. In the Fall, Paramount will obviously be releasing the 2009 JJ Abrams Star Trek movie on Blu-ray and DVD. Paramount is also planning a Fall release of a four-movie Next Generation movie box set with Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, and Nemesis, complete with new bonus features. CBS is also readying seasons 2 and 3 of The Original Series for Blu-ray for the Fall as well.

In addition to the Next Gen movie set and the rest of the TOS series on Blu-ray, there are also some ‘maybes.’ There may be a ten-movie Blu-ray box set combining all the ten previous feature Star Trek films, or possibly an eleven-film set which would include the 2009 Star Trek movie as well. CBS may release two more TV episode collection DVD sets: a ‘best of TOS’ and a best of TNG,’ although those may be Europe only.

Preliminary art (released in Europe) for TOS Seasons 2 & 3 on Blu-ray
– expected in late 2009

All in all 2009 is looking to be huge for Star Trek in home video. By the end of the year, every single Trek film and the entire Original Series will be out on Blu-ray with all sorts of new HD special features. As always, TrekMovie will be keeping track of all of these new projects and reporting news as it becomes available.

This article was done in collaboration with Bill Hunt of DigitalBits.com, the world’s best site for DVD and Blu-ray news.

yeeehaawwww

Icludes 6 motion pictures featuring Kirk and Spock!?!?!?! Ummm, Star Trek III?

Looks good so far. Too bad they cannot update the fx from the movies….especially 3 and 5

2.

Um, Kirk and Spock are both in Star Trek III. There’s like four or five different actors who play Spock.

Nice packaging pictures!
Let’s just hope they don’t forget to include the commentaries in the German version this time…

The Motion Picture Trilogy is very confusing when it only has 3 movies. They should have called it the “Genesis Collection” or something.

Nice. When or if they remaster TNG, I want to be on the effects team. :)

Is the Director’s Cut of TMP definitely in the works or is it just assumed? The wording of the article is unclear in this regard.

Say what you will about TMP, but you have to admit that the Director’s Cut blows the theatrical release out of the stars.

“Featuring Kirk and Spock!” I’m sure that sits well with Koenig, Nicholls, and Takei.

Nice work, Paramount. They poured alot of effort into new features when they could’ve easily coasted with what they already had. Now if we can only get the TMP Directors Edition…..

The ability to watch either the original or enhanced FX for TOS is absolutely perfect. Nice to see the studio not go the same route as Mr. Lucas…

This, below, is excellent news:

‘Special care has been given to the Blu-ray version of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, which has been ‘fully res[tor]ed’ in a process similar to Paramount’s recent Blu-ray edition of The Godfather. Director Nicholas Meyer tells us that the Wrath of Khan negative “was in terrible shape” which is why it needed extensive restoration’.

Unfortunately, they probably haven’t improved upon the special effects…The Genesis Cave needs a bit of work.

I will buy the Directors Editions, when they are released. If Trek Remastered is affordable, I’ll part with my hard-earned cash.

I won’t touch these Blu-ray movie release’s without the definitive “Directors Cut” of the first film!

Finaly. Trek and Bluray are coming together. Now thats what I have been waiting for.

2009 is quickly becoming the most expensive year for Trek fans. The new movie props/figures, Blu-Ray, Trek XI memorabilia, etc. Good thing I’ve been putting money aside each time into a “Trek” envelope…although the Blu-Ray stuff will use most of that up. Nice work!

4. Point taken. Spock is in it. “Featured” is kinda debatable, although he is featured by his absence.

To be completely honest, I don’t see the difference between Blue Ray and HD other than that fact that they have different names. If that is so, then I have no intention whatsoever of buying Trek on Blue Ray, since I pretty much have it on HD anyway, with exception to any of the series they haven’t released in HD (if there are any that is).

9: Yeeah, that’s a little bit odd. Most likely they just added that so the average buyer will know that it’s not a TNG movie collection, but still, it’s a tad weird to put on the cover so prominently.

Anyway, this is still an exciting article, even for someone who doesn’t have Blu-Ray (and in all probability never will, LOL.). These all sound like excellent collections, and I really love the box-art, too. The simple and elegant, while still exciting, look works very well, imo. Having both the remastered and original versions in one set is *brilliant,* and if I’d known last year that my neighbor was getting Blu-Ray and these were coming out, I’d have waited a while to get one of these for him. Very cool. :)

Well. Trek is finaly back at the forefront. This is a Good year for Star Trek and I for one am realy Excited. Not since Back ij the Mid 90s has Trek been on such a roll and even compared to then this roll is much bigger. Trek truly Lives and all of us can rejoice and be happy.

#14-

Yeah this year is gonna be brutal on the finances, but I think we all knew that. We should see alot of cool stuff this year, especially if you’re a fan of TOS.

#17-

The marketing campaign surrounding the new film has an emphasis on Kirk and Spock, so it’s not surprising they packaged the films that way. I think it’s more for newbies who might be jumping aboard for the first time.

Um, why are Orci and Kurtzman gonna have a commentary track on TVH? Does Trek XI have something to do with TVH?

Do we know if the preview trailers for TOS episodes are the original, minute-long versions from the 1960’s of the new, thirty second previews for Remastered. It would be great to have both. I for one really liked the updated previews. It was amazing to me that they could take 40-year old episodes and make them seem fresh and dynamic using the pacing/editing sensibilities of today’s trailers. They even featured a passable “Mr Movie Voice” imitation. Say it with me now….”In a world that didn’t understand….”

#20

Time travel is possible

What? Just Star Trek II? What about the other movies? Lowrey did all the Bonds, why not six of the originals?!

No fair! The Motion Picture is in worser shape than STII:TWOK!!!!!

Did I miss it in the article?

Are these the remastered versions of TOS or the original versions??? Anyone?

#24

In the article:

“The first season Blu-ray release features ’seamless branching’ technology that finally provides viewers the ability to see each episode with either the newly enhanced digital effects or the original special effects. You can also choose to listen to the newly enhanced soundtrack (7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio) or the original one (in glorious mono!).”

I assume the earlier movies are going to be released INDIVIDUALLY as well, and not just as a six-movie set?

The only ones I’m really dying to see in HD are TWOK, TSFS, and TUC.

“With the exception of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, the previously released first DVD versions of each film were the ‘theatrical versions’ followed by a second ’special edition’.”

God dangit! Bill screwed up again!

Looks great, I’ll definitely get the 6-movie set and TOS once they’re all out (and the price has come down! £40 is the absolute max I’m willing to pay for one season).

A few design niggles though:

(if someone can get in contact with Paramount Home Video and get them to correct that would be nice.)

The preliminary art for TOS seasons 2 and 3 have a better overall look than the one for season 1. The font is all wrong though, they must use the TOS font for TOS, I mean, they’re using it for the movies, which had a different typeface!

Also, the logo’s for season 2 and 3 should be the medical and engineering symbols respectively. I understand the command symbol is more recognisable but if the’re gonna use the colour…

The ‘six movies featuring Kirk & Spock’ looks silly. I hope it’s only on the cardboard sleeve rather than the actual cover.

Otherwise, I like what they’ve done here and can’t wait to get confirmation on the plans for Q4!

Also, anyone know what this ‘Best of TNG’ Blu-ray set is all about? I’m probably being too optimistic but I’d hope for a selection of 6-8 TNG episodes that have been remastered from the ground up like TOS as some kind of ‘testing the waters’ before doing the whole show. But I’m probably wrong…

Shame about the lack of TMP:DE and still no DE of TFF but alas…

Don’t they have these for Betamax yet?

I have season one on DVD and the HD DVD and DVD combo, goingto be pricey to buy it a third time, tempted to get seasons 2 and 3 to complete the remastered episodes.

I have all 5 Star Trek Series, 10 movies and animated series on DVD. THis is a great investment and a collection that I will always be proud off.

I thought it would have been better to do all TEN movies on blu ray rather than just TOS. It seems the spin offs are being forgotten now.

I love the original, it is to this day the coolest TV show ever, but I also love the spin offs and hope that paramount are not junking TNG from blu ray

#23

Lowry restored The Voyage Home and First Contact! At least he got to do some of them. I agree that TWOK and TMP needed his touch more than the others.

I am glad the TOS Blus are seamlessly branched because I don’t think a lot of the CGI FX were that great.

My girlfriend won’t be happy to hear this at all …

I can’t figure out why TPTB didn’t create a new print of ST:TMP for the directors cut. Why go to all the trouble of creating new FX, but not fix the quality of the print? Hope they fixed it for blu-ray.

Will ST 6 be in the correct aspect ratio (2.35:1)?

I sincerely hope the Director’s Edition TMP is released. It is quite an enhancement to the theatrical version. And for the other movies, I hope we can get a full remastered version sometime soon with enhanced FX, especially in Star Trek 5, 2, and a little on 3 (Enterprise escaping spacedock, the scale in relation to Excelsior).

118 dollars? Holy schnikeys.

I’m all over the six TOS era movies!

I’m relieved to see the original movies are seperate from the Next Gen films. But I hate it that I’ll have to buy TMP again, years down the road, in a special release of the superior director’s cut.

And before seasons 2 and 3 of TOS are released, Paramount would be well served to raid the vaults at the sci-fi channel, pony up a little extra $$, and include the wonderful interviews , including the final interviews of Deforest Kelley, that accompanyed the 90 minute special editiions that aired years ago. You have 40-50 gigs a disc, it’s not like there isn’t room for them. In fact you could even use the branching technology to use the Nimoy?Shatner wrap arounds. And how about those fantastic promos created for each of the remastered episodes? Let’s see those as well.

Come on Paramount, if you’re going to go to the well one last time, use a little more creativity, and little less stingy-ness and do it right.

“TOS but with the added benefit of allowing you to watch with the new CGI effects or the original 1960s effects. ”

Alright Dave Rossi. You win. I’ll get this set…… and….and…. I’m going to get bluray. I don’t know what one looks like. Never seen an example of one (although everyone keeps insisting this is the way to go) but that cinches it. The new effects and the original ones I argued with you about up in Chicago. You’ve done a win win for this series and the makers of Bluray. Pretty sly of you.

#16

The main issue is if your HD-DVD player craps out in a few years. Since the technology has been abandoned (and HD-DVD’s underlying tech is very different from Blueray) there’ll be no tech support to call, no new players available.

I’m just thrilled that the packaging is solid. Those goofy packages for the Remasters were unbearable.

I am actually glad I am broke! I REALLY want this new stuff and I am going to get them. I am sure somewhere down the road they’re going to come up with ANOTHER version. (dont know if the pockets can handle it)Then again, 120HZ TV here I come!!

You only live once.

So go out with a bang!

To CBS/Paramount:

Somwhere on Seasons 2 or 3 can you please include the Blooper reels for all three seasons? Pretty please? Thank you.

8 & 12
I can’t see the new CG. directors cut of TMP ever hitting Blu Ray as the effects were done in SD at the time for the sake of cost. They’d have to re-render the whole thing again which would probably cost too much to justify.

The overall quality of these releases though will be the thing. Just being on HD doesn’t mean it’ll look great automatically. I’ll hold off on buying a bluray player until the reviews ares in I think.

Nice roundup though guys. All the detail one could ask for.

I’m still waiting for blu-ray player prices to drop. And I have just purchased all three seasons on DVD. But I’m sure I’ll get Blu-Ray and the TOS sets within a few years.

Begs the question, but why is the motion picture box art using the original series’ star trek font, and yet the original series box art is using some different (and ugly) font? Also why is the preliminary art for seasons 2 and 3 of TOS different from season 1? Surely as a starting point you’d make it match the season 1 version that’s now been confirmed?

Except for the lack of extended versions for I, II, and VI, I have to say I’m impressed. And with the exception of TMP and the extended bits of II and VI commentary, it looks like they kept all the existing features as well. (I assume the text commentaries will be incorporated into the Library Computer BD feature.)

Random thoughts:

-I guess it’s safe to assume there are no original negatives for the DE of II and the Special Home Video Version of VI? (hopefully we’ll get these later along with a new TMP DE)

-They produced a Montalban tribute pretty fast (unless they were working on one already)!

-I wonder if they actually interviewed James Horner or a film/music historian instead (like Jeff Bond or Jon Burlingame). Just curious. I’m definitely interested in this piece!

-The Star Trek Summit piece sounds interesting.

-If I understand this correctly, the deleted scenes on the TMP disc are the same ones found on the DE DVD, but do NOT include anything that was actually added to the DE. Is this accurate?

-They got Meyer to sit down for a new commentary?! Cool. It’ll be nice hearing from Ron Moore and the Okudas, too.

-Star Trek I.Q., eh? Bring it on!

I wish I had a Blu-Ray player… and some money…

Between this, the Bluetooth Communicator Speaker Phone, the new movie, and well, Art Asylum’s everything… I need money. Lots and lots of money.

Long Live Trek!
