TWOK communicator was the biggest pile of excrement to hit the Star Trek universe since, I don’t know when. It was oversized, considering what the TOS communicator was like and then the TMP version.

The TWOK communicator looked as it should belong in the 1970’s Army service alongside one of those big rugged green telephones they used to use.
Having recently seen a close up of the collectible replica, it looks terrible. I wouldn’t want to buy it.

TWOK (Well, TMP) phaser on the other hand, looks awesome and I cannot wait to be able to purchase it.

Nice to know I’m not alone in this sentiment.

For the record, I wondered the same about TWOK Communicator. Someone felt the need for it to look like a cheap, Heathkit project. BTW, What are the necessary credentials for a “Film Production Designer” these days? Apparently, any garden-variety cartoonist, with a hangover is good enough…

I could not vocalise what my dislike of the prop was, but what you said is pretty much it.

My only minor disgreement is, I think that they actually have their roots in the 60’s. But as I said, a minor point.

I also think that Wah Chang would be holding his head in despair.

Does anyone remember those toy “Ray Guns” from the early 70s? They were usually silver, with red or blue nozzle caps. When you pulled the trigger, a wheel mechanism inside the gun made friction and caused bright sparks to shoot out from the barrel. That’s what I’m reminded of when I see this joke of a Phaser. Phasers were among the coolest gadgets in the Trek world. This “new” Phaser design is so cheesy looking, it’s as if the designers were having a collective laugh at the expense of Star Trek fans. The same could be said of the Tricorder and Communicator.

I’d bet Wah Chang would be disgusted by these silly “updated” parodies of his work.

The rest is ok… well, the bridge is kind of crap, again in my opinion, but hey, movie’s in the can and there’s no stopping it now.

Sadly, I think this will be the first time that there are no “New” trek toys that even remotely interest me enough to blow my money on.

Thank god Art Asylum/Diamond Select is still doing actual Trek toys.
