I still have some serious hopes for this movie; I still think there's a chance it'll be good ...

But at this point, I'm thinking the main reason to avoid opening weekend is: how can I hear the movie over the sound of bleating?

THE TEMPORAL PRIME DIRECTIVE

That's how you really know this is a reboot. If canon applied, Daniels or some other representative of Temporal Investigations would have returned to warn Kirk, NOT Spock. The fact is, given Orci's explanation, there can be no "Temporal Investigations" as every incursion creates a new universe, while the old one continues on.

Maybe canon got us to this new universe, but going forward, we won't go back to the characters we know from "our" classic universe. They live in a universe where nothing is the same as it was for Kirk and Co. back in 1966 for us. The fact is, there is NO way to go back to our universe with this story, not to mention how confusing that would be to a brand new audience.

Will the "classic" universe we all know and love continue in some form? Doubtful, at least not officially. Well, I suppose on James Cawley's website and other fan sites. But once you create a new "origin" story for Kirk & Co., in order to build a franchise, you have to stick to the new reality. Not that it will be bad or unenjoyable to follow, but Paramount can't ever go back ... at least not with these actors. Maybe 40 years from now when another generation of fans waxes nostalgic for the "real" crew of the Enterprise. By then, they can probably just CGI Shatner, Nimoy, Kelley and Doohan.

Would I have been happier if the studio, writers and producers had not lied (or mislead, or had a good marketing strategy or whatever you want to call what they have so clearly been engaged in)? Of course. I think there would have been a lot less grief and ultimately they would not have lost any of the fanbase. Then again, they would not have continued to stir a pot of publicity on a daily basis since the movie was announced.

"..Abrams admitted that he and Chris Pine would do ‘beat boxing’ between takes, and he and Chris demonstrated their skills with Pine riffing "Star Trek in da house" ..."

I'm going to write my own, get my friends to beat-box, stand up on the lunch table in front of 3-400 students, and do that. I better get writin'... I haven't written much rap. xDDD (Maybe I'll get on Youtube!... Or maybe a referral. O.o)

Okay, note to Pine: DON'T WEAR THAT SHIRT. I'm sorry, it's not all that flattering. Plaid.. No. No. And Quinto? I'm not crazy about HIS outfit either. -siiiiiigh- They're celebs!! Get some style, guys! Or, uh, pick up a magazine. Talk to their stylists. (Sorry, that was totally bugging me.)

On a more serious note, very cool on the interviews. I loved it. ;3 So jealous that Saldana got to meet Nichelle Nichols!! That must've been way cool. And her hair really looked nice. (Plus!)

133.

Right. The "stand in line" theory. I used to work at a hot dog place in the mall, we would go hours without any customers...but as soon as one came to break the drought, suddenly a bunch would come. This happened quite often. People like to stand in line. They like to do what everyone else is doing—without knowing or caring if something is good or bad. This is what makes hype so valuable for opening weekend on films.

It's the word of mouth after the hype that drives in the really high numbers.

63. God bless and rest up, Clive Staples!

This is a great little bit from Anthony's piece:

` . . . The director noted that his favorite movies are those that "combine characters that are complex, that are broken in some way, but you believe them and they are real and they make you feel…and then they are thrown into the craziest s–t of all time." . . '

If that isn't a perfect capsule description of the characters on "Lost" -- and an equally perfect description of the Big Three on TOS -- then I'll eat my frozen donkey wheel. I guess that's the reason why they're my two favorite TV shows of all flippin' time.

116. Capt. of the USS Anduril
"Whoa whoa whoa….since when are movie tickets 10 bucks a pop??? The most you pay at my movie theater is 5.50, and that’s after 6, before that it’s 3.50. Of course, our theater’s a piece of crap that’s run by a Canadian whack-job, but it’s better than nothing."

5.50??? Where do you live? Even the outskirts of Montreal, where I live, the tickets go for 9.50 a pop. And on cheap Tuesdays, it's 7.50
