New Box Art Reveals Details For Upcoming Star Trek Blu-Ray Sets + Trek Parody Gets Deluxe DVD

CBS and Paramount have released more box art for the upcoming Star Trek Blu-Ray releases. Plus there is a new promo video online for the TOS Season One Blu-ray set. And there an additional exciting Deluxe Edition film coming out on the same day as the other Trek films (hint: one special feature is a ‘Thermian Audio Track’).

CBS has also put out a promotional video for the set, which is available for viewing at Amazon.com.

The TOS Season 1 Blu-ray set comes out April 28th, and can be pre-ordered from Amazon now, and the price has been discounted further (currently at $80.99).

TOS movies Blu-ray box front
Paramount have not yet released the box back for the “Star Trek Original Motion Picture Collection” but they have revealed the actual box front (and 3-D angle), which confirms the (somewhat controversial) thing at the bottom promoting “includes 6 motion pictures featuring Kirk and Spock” is just a card that is removed with the shrink wrap.

The Motion Picture Collection comes out on May 12th, and can be pre-ordered from Amazon now (currently at $97.99).

By Grabthar’s Hammer – Galaxy Quest Deluxe DVD Edition
On May 12th, the same day when all the Star Trek TOS films get rereleased on Blu-ray (and the ‘Genesis Trilogy’ gets released on Blu-ray and DVD), Paramount are releasing another space film on DVD: The Galaxy Quest Deluxe Edition. The 1999 comedy Galaxy Quest is a loving parody of Star Trek films and fandom, and some consider it to be ‘the best Trek film of the last decade.’

Here is the official synopsis:

For four years, the courageous crew of the NSEA protector – “Commander Peter Quincy Taggart” (Tim Allen), “Lt. Tawny Madison (Sigourney Weaver) and “Dr.Lazarus” (Alan Rickman) – set off on a thrilling and often dangerous mission in space…and then their series was cancelled! Now, twenty years later, aliens under attack have mistaken the Galaxy Quest television transmissions for “historical documents” and beam up the crew of has-been actors to save the universe. With no script, no director and no clue, the actors must turn in the performances of their lives.

The special features included are:

  • Historical Documents: The Story of Galaxy Quest
  • Never Give Up. Never Surrender: The Intrepid Crew of the NSEA Protector Featurette
  • By Grabthar’s Hammer, What Amazing Effects Featurette
  • Alien School – Creating the Thermian Race Featurette
  • Actors in Space Featurette
  • Sigourney Weaver Raps Featurette
  • Thermian Audio Track
  • Deleted Scenes (Used on 2000 release)
  • Theatrical Trailer (Used on 2000 release)

And here is the box art:

awesome

by Grabthars hammer – 1st?

wow GQ is ten years old…where did that go?..and can i have them back?

dammit!!!…. I knew they were going to rope me in to buying them all… AGAIN!!! How sinister they are!!!

Galaxy Quest looks like another must have, as well!!

At last! A Galaxy Quest special edition! Yay!!

Anthony, where is todays Sci-Fi Sunday? It really makes my otherwise quiet Sunday afternoons,

Bah, let me know when the box art of the blu-ray widescreen remastered version of DS9 is released! :(

I don’t really ‘get’ the cover design of the Galaxy Quest deluxe edition. Why is Sigourney Weaver so prominently displayed? Isn’t that like putting Nichelle Nichols front and center on the cover of Star Trek III?

Why couldnt they releasr GQ on Blu-ray as well. :(

#8 It’s because Sigourney Weaver has big boobies in this movie, and men (at least MOST men) like boobies and would be attracted enough to them on the cover to buy this DVD. That being said, unless they released GQ on Blue Ray, I won’t be buying it, boobies or not. lol

When are we going to get a DVD box of all three edits of TMP? I like the director’s cut best, but I sometimes miss that voice that goes “EEEMURGENCY ALURT!! NNNNEGGADIVE CONTROL AT HELM!”

I like Sulu in his vintage shirt!

This is awesome! Galaxy Quest was a great parody as well as tribute.

I will always remember Quiddic’s (sp?) dying scene, when he said to Dr. Lazarus, “Although we have never met, I have always considered you as a father”. How many of us feel that special connection to a Star Trek character, especially from ST:TOS? I know that I feel a strong connection with Kirk and Spock. I was very sad when De Kelley died. To me, Galaxy Quest stepped into our shoes.

As to featuring Sigourney Weaver, I think its an inside joke. In the movie, Tawney Madison explains that her “TV Guide interview was two paragraphs about her boobs and how they fit into her suit”.

Thanks Anthony!

Alan Rickman is holding his phaser backwards!

Well, I already have Galaxy Quest on DVD, but I think I’m gonna get this Special Edition anyway.

GALAXY QUEST DELUXE EDITION!!!!!!! WHOO-HOO!!!!!!!!!!! I love that movie so much!!!! It’s about time it’s getting a special edition.

FANTASTIC NEWS! I can finally add a high quality version of my favorite Trek movie to my collection… Galaxy Quest…

OK, TWOK is my favorite (of course) but I still remember watching Galaxy Quest in theatres with my wife and completely losing it I was laughing so hard (we were the ONLY ones who were – apparently there was not any other Trek fans in the theatre) – very happy about this release.

Um I have a question…

Why is Sulu in a BLUE uniform? I never remember his having a blue on it was always yellow if I’m not mistaken.

#19 Mark, he wore blue in “Where No Man Has Gone Before.”

19: Sulu’s shirt was blue in the Jeffrey “Thank-your-lucky-stars-Bill-Shatner” Hunter pilot “The Cage.”

#19 – Watch “Where No Man Has Gone Before” again… :)

I have a question, I came across a normal DVD player (Toshiba) which said it can upscale to 1080p. Now, given that I don’t have a Blueray player, is this worth investing in? Has anyone come across this before and what do we think??

http://www.home-entertainment.toshiba.co.uk/en/DVD-Players-Recorders-Upscaling/DVD-Players/DVD-Player-SD-480/

Can’t wait for the new Galaxy Quest, but they are not going to rope me into buying another collection of TOS right now…lol

I’m still mad at CBS for changing the box art. It’s like pissing on all the fans who bought the HD DVD version and wanted a coherent collection. I mean, couldn’t we at least have had that now when won’t get the rest on the same format?

You don’t change the original TOS font. You just don’t. It’s sacred.

I’ve thought about getting Galaxy Quest from time to time, guess I have no execuse now.

Strange that they aren’t using the TOS font on the series, but are on the movie boxset, probably some legal reason.

23. Upscaling is just so DVDs look less crappy on HDTVs. It won’t let you play Blu-Ray discs.

25.”You don’t change the original TOS font. You just don’t. It’s sacred”

I ‘m with you about changing the font, but in this case I don’t care. I’m just thrilled that they’re giving us the original mono soundtracks back. While the remixes were nice, they did take liberties adding sounds that weren’t in the mix before ( for ex: Balance Of Terror – the phaser shots were originally silent ). And I also wasn’t thrilled when they would replace the original music with a re-recorded or alternate track ( For ex: The Menagerie Part 2 – They replaced the episode title card music with music from The Doomsday Machine… a music cue that wasn’t even recorded until the year after! ). In fact, I stopped buying the individual DVDs because I was so bummed out about it ( which turned out to be a good thing, considering how many goofs were made with those two-episode volumes ).

I always maintained that if you are going to do a remix…fine, but give us the original version as an option as well. I might never use it, but it’s nice to have it anyway.

I’m iffy about getting the “Trek” movie set, seeing as I have all ten on DVD. But I’ll DEFINITELY be getting Season 1 of TOS on Blu-ray! That’s definitely a must-own!

God bless!

I’m getting “Galaxy Quest”. It’s a must own DVD :)

8 – might be due to Weavers standing in Sci Fi movies in general…being the star of the Alien films is abit more important than the Home Improvment/Toy Story guy and Hans Gruber

i wonder if they’ll acknowledge star trek in the extras this time…on the current dvd theres no mention what-so-ever…almost to say ‘star trek?? whats that?’

some not so obvious GQ/Trek trivia from imdb:

-The design of the NTE ship is based on a Star Trek comm-badge

-Sarris’ ship closely resembles the giant planet-destroying ship from “Star Trek” (1966) episode #2.6, “The Doomsday Machine

-The rock monster is a mock tribute to William Shatner, who desperately wanted to put rock monsters in the climax of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989), but had to cut them out of his script for budgetary reasons. There are a couple of references to “Star Trek” (1966) episode #1.18, “Arena”, particularly the suggestion to “build a weapon” during Jason’s encounter with the rock monster.

-The concept of the Thermians being purple-skinned large-tentacled creatures taking on human form bears a resemblance to the “Star Trek” (1966) episode “By Any Other Name” (#2.22). In that episode, an alien race known as the Kelvans were huge-tentacled creatures who took on human form.

-The final battle between Sirrus’s ship and NSEA Protector in the minefield could have been a tribute to the final battle between Star Trek’s Kirk and Khan in the nebula in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

-When the crew are eating aboard the ship, they are told that the food has been prepared based on their regional cuisine. The commander comments that the steak tastes like Iowa Beef. This seems like a subtle reference to the fact that Captain Kirk (Star Trek) is from Iowa

– Sarris’ metal eye-patch mimics that worn by General Chang (Christopher Plummer) in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991).

-The NSEA Protector’s serial number is NTE 3120. NTE is short for Not The Enterprise

Id also add that ‘Enterprise’ seems to have taken its cue from GQ in some places – the NX01 isnt unlike the GQ ship, young black guy at the helm, Xindi look alot like Sarris species, uniforms are somewhat similar to the GQ ones..also TNG – young kid at the helm in the original GQ series, the pan out from Allens eyeball after hes sent back to earth – similar to Picard at the start of FC

For my money, no STAR TREK film collection is complete without FORBIDDEN PLANET (the original TREK Prequel!) and GALAXY QUEST, a more loving TREK spoof you’ll never find.

Galaxy Quest is a classic!!

:o)

8 – Mawazitus

“Why is Sigourney Weaver so prominently displayed? ”

I’ll give you two good guesses.

Two nice round guesses.

33 – yes FP can pretty much be considered a ST prequel!..(although i have to confess it took me 4 times to watch it as i kept falling asleep!)

By Grabthar’s Hammer! Must have that GalaxyQuest DVD!

And dang it, I wish I had Blu-Ray….
For the series, if not the movies. And where are the Next Gen movies?
(I suppose I still wouldn’t buy them; I have all the DVDs….)

LOL @ #35. So True.

Oh never mind I looked up pictures and it shows him wearing a blue uniform in the second pilot.

I’m sorry I was mistaken.

““Why is Sigourney Weaver so prominently displayed? ”

I’ll give you two good guesses.

Two nice round guesses.”

…THey wanted to show off her nacelle upgrades.

By Grabthar’s Hammer, what a movie!

It’s sad, that Berman & Co. never came up with such a funny, entertaining and great space-adventure like GQ. Even if GQ was a comedy, it was far, far better and more trek-like than Insurrection or Nemesis.

At least, it look like, the new movie will step in the shoes of Galaxy Quest (in form of scale, design, SFX, action and humor) :))

FYI… the Thermian commentary track is on the original DVD release. From what I can see, not too many upgrades on this version. Definitely will purchase again when it is Blu-Ray.

Such a great movie. So many great Trek tributes, including the inspired Crewman #6 performance from Sam Rockwell.

Sigourney Weaver at her finest!

Will the figure be available in other countries this time? And will they include all the commentaries this time?

#43
“Sigourney Weaver at her finest!”

Blasphemy … I just watched Aliens for the first time today! By far her finest hours.

Rastaman… what took you so long? :)

Anthony accidentally linked to the small thumbnail jpg for the Season 1 reverse-side box art. Here is the correct link (removed the “_t” at the end):

There are 4 or 5 new featurettes on the new GQ disk. The Thermian soundtrack was on the original disk… and is amusing for about 30 seconds. I can’t imagine watching the whole movie listening to that.

I’m thrilled they are creating new material… but rather bummed that it’s not on Blu-Ray. *sigh* Not sure if I’ll double-dip this one..

41. Get a hold of yourself, man. GQ is satire, and it’s a weak brew at that.

I’d get Galaxy Quest if it were on BluRay, too. Who doesn’t already have it on DVD?
