#225 - "Never forget the question which is in the back of the minds of many a fan:

“What if Paramount throws everything it has into this movie — and it still fails?”
    Perhaps the following would occur:
If a major failure, then no more new movie or TV Trek. Ever.
If a failure, but not major, then no new movie or TV Trek for at least ten to twenty years, relegating Trek to the lines of Battlestar Galactica or worse.
If a small success, but still a disappointment, this might as well be the same as a failure.
If a moderate success, then maybe one sequel, with a considerably lower budget.
If a major success, then one or more sequels with equivalent or greater budgets.
If a blockbuster, then Trek aplenty, with the inclusion of new sequels and possible TV spinoffs."

My guess would be similar, but more like:

If a failure of any significance, then no more new movie or TV Trek for at least ten to twenty years, until some producer decides he or she has a better way to do it and sells the studio execs on giving it another chance...or unless there's a significant uptick in interest in the existing library of Trek material, and somebody convinces the studio that Abrams's approach was just plain wrong and trying something radically different is the way to go.

If a small success, but still a disappointment, either one sequel, with a considerably lower budget, to see if there can be a turnaround, or a shift to DVD releases with lower investment levels relative to sales potential.

If a major success, then one or more sequels with equivalent or greater budgets.

If a blockbuster, then several sequels, with particular attention to the potential for TV spinoffs, though likely not TV immediately.

Guys most of you miss the point about kirk, we all know that he in TOS he grew up not a trouble maker was on the straight and narrow, was a book worm ya maybe got in a fight or two but nothing really bad. Now what if his life was turned around, father died when he was a baby, was a trouble maker always getting in fights and really did not excell in school would be the captain we all know and JJ is saying YES. Nero trys to destroy everything kirk did and become but he fails, I like this story very much and the trailer ROCKED oh and Star Trek was never dead it's still alive in me and everyone here on this board even the ones that say it's dead it's alive in you and even when you pass away it will stil be there!!

I went to grad school and I think I or any of my friends could be described as "a stack of books on legs" and we were nothing like that beforehand. It's a statement on determination, focus and neccesity. If you look at Kirk his nature is to enjoy life (he lears at his female employees and is very casual when there's no issue but he is driven to do his job well and snaps into a different mode when he is called upon to lead. There's nothing in there that contradicts a rebellious childhood. And when he has downtime he shows an ease in socialization that is far from nerdy. And his failures in marriage and with women relate to his focus on the job and the contradiction between that and the Jim Kirk he otherwise would have been. Those who are surprised at Kirk being a rebel are adding too much of their own biography to Kirk's backstory. It's not in TOS or the movies.

And regarding the transition from Cadet to Captain, there's scenes from Kirk's childhood so there's nothing to imply that the scenes with Kirk don't include a reunion years later (possibly in a restored timeline, with some vague intangible sense of trust). Let's just wait for the damn movie before criticizing things that we don't know.
