I guess I’m kind of excited too…my wife is sitting behind me as a I write this – I’ve watched the trailer like 10 times already tonight. “Are you watching that AGAIN?” she says. Snicker…gues I’m a fan.

Don’t worry. They’re not going to show any boobies or anything. The scene will be cleaner than your average prime time television show.

You’re not. Superman Returns fell flat because it was everything a major franchise relaunch shouldn’t be: slavishly riffing on past themes having almost exactly the same designs as the original movies and actors cast who are made up and/or dressed to be almost exact lookalikes of the original actors, and whose performances are mostly pastiches of the originals.

I like it in a kind of nostalgic way and it’s an interesting alternative Superman III, but it has no real identity of its own!

I think what I just can’t comprehend is the whole idea that we *need* to be “freed”. I don’t see maintaining continuity to be a limiting thing at all, so I have never felt a need to run away from it. It’s discontinuity that I dislike.

“Can we just imagine what a retelling of SPACE SEED would be like with Bad Robot? Or how about BALANCE OF TERROR, or even the TRIBLES? Or what about a revisit of the DOOMSDAY MACHINE?”

Frankly, I’d really hope that even in an alternate timeline, the writers would be more innovative than simply redoing stories that have already been done, just differently. That seems to be defeating the whole purpose of breaking away from a previous continuity, doesn’t it?

I loved the real new trailer also. cant wait.

The introspection comment was more of a joke. I wasn’t asking for more of the same, and I have no problem with a compelling storyline. I’m glad you found the new film to be compelling and feel that there was something going on “under the skin”, I just didn’t feel it myself.
I also have no problem with a film that runs long, as long as the material merits it. I liked Singer’s X Men films, which somehow struck a good balance of action and drama despite having some of the goofiest heroes and villains in the cast. I also feel that there was more joy in 5 minutes of Christopher Reeve flying, and more raw emotion when he finds Lois dead in the original than there was in the entire 2 + hours of Superman Returns.

Actually when Superman Returns came out I went to Target and bought Superman: The Movie for $7.50 on sale. Not bad for a 30 year old film.

Anyway, I’m not here to flame, I just don’t like to be cast as a “brainless” movie watcher because I didn’t love Superman Returns. I didn’t hate it, but it fell far short of my expectations.
