Well, maybe. He could have been living a life that wasn’t his dream. Not happy, but not terribly unhappy, and consoling himself in the thought that his sacrifices made life better for the Romulan people as a whole.

Then if Romulus’ star goes POOF and he perceives stubbornness and stupidity on the part of the Romulan government, it might make him not only snap, but also re-evaluate his entire life.

Actually, Picard’s following those breadcrumbs too – he was an Ambassador in the AGT future.

The AGT future was a “real” future after all, and present-Crusher confirmed that Picard stood a high chance of ending up with the early-stage dementia he had in that future. Things change, but, then, not everyone’s going down the AGT road, and that’s fine too.
