ST09 Tidbits (T-38 days): Lindelof On TNG, Runtime & Sequels + Pine Buzz + NYC Party + more March 30, 2009

by Anthony Pascale , Filed under: Great Links, Star Trek (2009 film) , trackback

We kick off another week in Star Trek with more movie Tidbits, starting off with new comments on TNG cameo rumors, Courage’s theme in ST09, sequels, and runtime from Star Trek producer Damon Lindelof. We also have pictures from the latest Star Trek Dance party, a look at the buzz around the new Kirk, and  more.

Lindelof: no TNG cameos + Courage music in movie + 2 sequels?
Remember earlier in the month when Latino Review floated a rumor that there would be TNG cameos in the new Star Trek. TrekMovie quickly dispelled that, but it didn’t stop other sites, like AICN from picking it up. Today in an interview with MTV, Star Trek producer Damon Lindelof makes it clear the the TNG cameos are only in the "Countdown" comic books, noting "we do not want to mislead the public into thinking they’ll see next gen cameos.” Lindelof also discussed the inclusion of the classic Alexander Courage theme in the film, confirming it would be used noting "Where we use it in the film it works, I would say it is used very specifically and at exactly the right time.” Finally Lindelof commented on the future of the Trek movie franchise, with this hope:

Ideas have been thrown around that are very informal at this point. Hopefully there will be a couple more movies if its successful.

Lindelof (at Comic Con), shows his Trek love

Runtime: 126 minutes
Lindelof also talked to MTV about the runtime for Star Trek, saying "The actual content of the movie is at about exactly 2 hours." TrekMovie has already got more clarification on this and the total runtime for the film is 126 minutes (which apparently includes the credits).

NY Star Trek Dance Party
Last week we reported on the new Star Trek Dance Parties trying to bring a little Trek to the club going crowd. These parties are run by ‘Cobra Snake’ who have posted pictures from last Friday’s event at Webster Hall in New York.

Chris Pine (Kirk) is building a lot of buzz, including his Kid’s Choice Awards appearance last weekend. Here are the latest bits on Pine.

Classic Posters ST09 style
Speaking of posters TrekMovie reader Nicolaus Taylor has taken it upon himself to re-imagine all the TOS movie era posters for the new Star Trek. Hi res versions of his retro-ST09 posters are at ntbone.com (scroll down page). Here are some comparisons.

Yeah Like Chris Pine needs advice from Lindsey Lohan.

2. ...i have touched the sky - March 30, 2009

Cool posters

3. Tam - March 30, 2009

Wait, wait. Lindsay Lohan is giving Pine advice. Like what, who to contact for discreet Coke deals? What the best locations to give the paparazzi pantiless upskirt photos are? How to take a promising career and lob off his own foot?

4. Nx-01-a-3 - March 30, 2009

interesting

5. The Real Kobayashi_Maru - March 30, 2009

I’m impressed with those posters…great job…any of which would have been fantastic posters for an ad campaign…

6. Nx-01-a-3 - March 30, 2009

PIne needs advice from lindsey lohan? hmmm…..

7. Beck - March 30, 2009

Chris is looking particularly good in that vest/jeans combo. Nice.

8. Nx-01-a-3 - March 30, 2009

slow news day?

9. Dennis Bailey - March 30, 2009

She could suggest which chicks to date.

10. Kaiser The Great - March 30, 2009

The poster link doesn’t seem to lead me to the posters.

11. Stuart Baird - March 30, 2009

Pine really is a hot guy! Im glad the buzz is building for him!

12. Spock - March 30, 2009

I bet the original theme is used when Kirk takes command of the Enteprise, or during Pike’s speech to Kirk.

13. VOYAGER's WARP ENGINE - March 30, 2009

So, where can we get a copy of that little blue poster with the Enterprise on it from that’s in some of those Dance Party photos?

14. Andy Patterson - March 30, 2009

Oooh. Where is Webster Hall? I want to be handed a T-shirt too.

15. The Man from Saskatoon - March 30, 2009

16. Ian - March 30, 2009

I really hope he doesn’t take any of Lohan’s advice to heart. Now as Captain Kirk he could totally hook up with her then abandon her just like every other alien chick he hooked up with. And yes, Lohan is an alien.

17. Smitty™ - March 30, 2009

For the record Chris and Lindsay did a film together.

A flick titled Just My Luck.

forgot to say,

the posters look great, unforunately there must a shed-load of traffic hitting the link as I cant access, i’ll try laters

20. Lou - March 30, 2009

Hey I’m glad someone is reaching out to the kids on this one. Lord knows they could use a good healthy dose of Trek.

But good Lord, man. If that’s how you’re going to treat a perfectly good kit of the new ship, when there are tons of folks (just check the hobby boards) who’d gladly give body parts for one. That’s just a crime.

21. TrekTwenty - March 30, 2009

the re-imagined posters are looking fantastic…if only I could see them blown up =(

22. JML9999 - March 30, 2009

In the Vein of the Posters. For a Sequel a re imaging of “Space Seed”? So do they get a Bollywood Sikh actor to play Khan or do they get somebody like Antonio Banderas.

23. thomoz - March 30, 2009

http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3943602176/tt0397078

above link is a shot of Lohan and Pine from ‘Just My Luck’, I think he got to kiss her at a party (while he was dressed as Zorro) in the film.

24. Silvereyes - March 30, 2009

Somebody should tell that young, hum, lady to put some clothes on.

25. weerd1 - March 30, 2009

Wow- any one of those posters is better than the one they picked and envokes the older movies. I like them, they’re exciting.

26. cpelc - March 30, 2009

that guy’s dvd and blu ray covers look pretty cool too

27. The Last Maquis - March 30, 2009

#1. Magishine

I hear she gives good…um Advice.

28. Andrew - March 30, 2009

Chris,

Take Lindsay’s advice, and then DO THE OPPOSITE!

29. Capt Mike Of The Terran Empire - March 30, 2009

Ok. The Big e in the Dance club poster is not Canon. I maen where were the Shields. The Shields would have never let those Darts in. Loved those posters. Very Kool.

30. SaphronGirl - March 30, 2009

22.

// So do they get a Bollywood Sikh actor to play Khan or do they get somebody like Antonio Banderas.//

Well, my guess would be Indian actor Naveen Andrews, who plays Sayid Jarrah in Lost. You know, the whole J.J. Abrams connection, and the fact that he’s actually the right ethnicity. ;)

31. Daniel Broadway - March 30, 2009

Ugh. I’d love to have a model of the new Enterprise, and these people who get one just mess them up. Lame.

32. JML9999 - March 30, 2009

#30

yep it’s a pity it took until “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” to get Nemo right.

33. screaming satellite - March 30, 2009

Lohan for Dr Janice Lester….

Paris Hilton for Ruth

Christina for Carol Marcus…

Britany for ilia…

Katie Holmes for Savvik

Pamela Anderson for Gillian

Sarah Jessica Parker for Valerius

35. ShawnP - March 30, 2009

My God, Chris Pine is yummy.

36. DJT - March 30, 2009

I like the Undiscovered Country redux poster, myself.

37. danpaine - March 30, 2009

Those kids didn’t even know why they were at the damn party.

38. Jorg Sacul - March 30, 2009

“Lindelof also discussed the inclusion of the classic Alexander Courage theme in the film, confirming it would be used noting “Where we use it in the film it works, I would say it is used very specifically and at exactly the right time.”

I like that theme, it’s exciting! :) I have the feeling it will be a goose-bumpy, chill up the spine, sportin’ wood kinda moment.

39. Pragmaticus - March 30, 2009

I happen to like the reimagining of the STVI poster.

40. Ashley - March 30, 2009

Lindelof also discussed the inclusion of the classic Alexander Courage theme in the film, confirming it would be used noting “Where we use it in the film it works, I would say it is used very specifically and at exactly the right time.”

I was hoping that it’d kick in while Spock is time-traveling….that’d be way rad! :D

41. The Man from Del Monte - March 30, 2009

I think I actually like those mockups more than the real thing now…

42. tomodedadio - March 30, 2009

Just bought tickets to the World Premier on Tuesday 7th April at Sydney Opera House.I get to see the film A WHOLE MONTH before its released………..OOH YEAH!!!

43. Harry Ballz - March 30, 2009

Lohan was probably begging Pine for a job…..he should tell her to get one…..at Burger King!

44. Stanky McFibberich - March 30, 2009

re:”Lindelof also discussed the inclusion of the classic Alexander Courage theme in the film, confirming it would be used noting “Where we use it in the film it works, I would say it is used very specifically and at exactly the right time.””

Likely translation: It will hardly be noticeable.

45. The Governator - March 30, 2009

42. tomodedadio

I am so jealous that I couldn’t put the full range of my jealousy into words. Please, come back and give hints, but don’t spoil us!

46. Richard Daystrom - March 30, 2009

Stanky, Why so neg all the time?? Don’t like it , don’t go!

47. The Governator - March 30, 2009

44. Stanky McFibberich

WTF? How can you not notice it? So I guess that not only do you lack confidence in J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci, Alex K., Damon L., Bryan B., and company, but you also lack confidence in Michael Giacchino? You never cease to amaze me.

48. VOYAGER'sWARPENGINE - March 30, 2009

@ 15 The Man from Saskatoon -
Thanks for the link :)

49. catchupwiththesun - March 30, 2009

I know, right?

50. spockatatic - March 30, 2009

The Undiscovered Country one was the best…

51. TonyD - March 30, 2009

Very nice posters; I especially like the riff on ST:TMP. That one could have actually worked well as an official release.

52. CarlG - March 30, 2009

@44: Michael Giacchino is brilliant. Full stop.

Now you’re just sounding desparate for complaints.

Nice threads on Pine, but please get Lindsay Lohan way the hell away from our Trek.

I like the posters, and the Trek-themed party. It’s the best of both worlds — even people who don’t like the new movie will have fun cause they get to use the new Enterprise for target practice!

53. anon - March 30, 2009

The JJ-prise with arrows through it. That feels just about right.

No matter how you look at it, those nacelles are damned ugly. John Eaves has a photo on his website that pretty much proves it once and for all.

54. Thorny - March 30, 2009

51. TonyD… I totally agree. The remake of the ST:TMP poster would have been perfect for this movie, in my opinion… original but with a nod to what came before. I for one am baffled by the Photoshop filter malfunction that Paramount calls the official movie poster.

55. Will - March 30, 2009

I’m sorry, I continue to think that these dance parties are just… aiming to capture the wrong audience. I mean, one of my ex-girlfriends was big into clubs and dancing and, honestly, every person I ever met that she knew or met at a club was a freaking drugged out moron. That’s a big reason I wound up not being able to stand her.

God, I bet that she was at the NY thing and I bet now she’s totally into STar Trek even though she told me that Star Trek was “the lamest thing ever. Can we please just watch Gossip Girls?” But alas, I guess that’s the mind of a girl who goes to FIT.

56. Locke for President - March 30, 2009

I’m in the middle of watching the all of the movies in preparation of the new movie. With my new and bigger widescreen TV, it’s like watching completely different movies. The colors and detail are amazing.

Did you know that in the brig scene in Star Trek V, we see a toilet? I never noticed this before. I assumed that when Kirk pushed the button it was just a seat that came out of the wall.

But no, it is a toilet. There is a flush botton, a place where the toilet paper would come from, and you can see the line on the seat where the lid would be.

The words above the toilet is a warning that says not to use it while in spacedock.

Pretty funny stuff. It took me almost 20 years to notice this.

57. Chris M - March 30, 2009

Those posters by Nicolaus Taylor look unbelievable! :)

58. GoDFaDDa - March 30, 2009

My guess is that the music will be at the end – Kirk in the gold shirt, setting off on their first five-year mission (”Buckle up!” from the trailers), and the Courage music plays as the ship goes to warp and over the end credits.

Very similar to what Casino Royale did, a successful reboot (something they want to imitate).

59. Holger - March 31, 2009

I like the made-up TMP-style poster better than the actual ones.

60. ntbone - March 31, 2009

hey, just FYI – all the “blown up” versions of the poster can be found by clicking the images above, or at my website:

http://www.ntbone.com/art.html

61. Chadwick - March 31, 2009

I want one of those blue star trek posters!

62. Jamie - March 31, 2009

I’m disappointed to hear that TOS theme won’t be played as the main opening theme of this movie. In other words, the theme has been “demoted” to the role of a supporting theme.

Shame. The tune is an important part of Star Trek and I think Alexander Courage’s theme could work fine as the main theme of the movie, given proper treatment.

63. GaryS - March 31, 2009

The new posters are nice homages to the past .

64. Spock with a Crowbar - March 31, 2009

31,
I feel you Daniel, but artists are only given stuff like that so that they can incorporate them into some kind of art piece. It’s not like you could just keep it and paint something else if you were an involved artist, or they wouldn’t give it to you in the first place.

see also: Kid Robot’s ‘Dunny’ this is another thing that you can find lots of artists’ work on, but the shape design stays the same. There’s lots of these sort of designs in the lo-brow art community. That’s what they’re doing with the Enterprise shape in the pics.

65. Chadwick - April 2, 2009

wow there are some awkward looking people at that party, if it were not for all the pretty girls, yea I would bounce, and blow that popsicle stand.

PUT THOSE BLUE STAR TREK POSTERS UP ON EBAY, I WANT ONE!!!!!
