Paramount gave STII to Bennett as a business decision and the fact that TWOK succeeded had an element of luck to it that cannot be denied.
If JJ has become a fan, fine. The fact is, there are many forces at play when a studio is poised to invest 100mil+ in a project and decides on a point person to take it on- and take the heat.
JJ is in a position that fosters HUGE risks, and if he’s become a fan, more power to him. It’s to his, and the studio’s, advantage.
The bottom line is- Trek is alive and well.

Of course, not being a fan can just as easily break a movie, especially one with as rich a “family” history as Star Trek. Just look at Nemesis. It felt as though all the life and history of that family aboard that ship had been ignored except for Riker and Troi getting married. Hopefully JJ didn’t make those kinds of mistakes.

Neither Harve Bennett nor Nick Meyer were fans prior to “taking on” STII: TWOK. And *that* film—still today—sets the standard for not only Trek films, but B-movies in general.
