Summary of coverage of Star Trek in the Spanish media
Star Trek has not been very popular in Spain, however the JJ Abrams event received a lot of positive coverage in the mainstream Spanish media. Here are some examples.

Telecinco

  •  [includes video]Report says you don’t need to be a Trekkie and that you need to be Vulcan not to be thrilled.
  • Zoe Saldaya is quoted says that when she was a child and heard the song of TOS in the living room, she thought “Oh, there are the old ones watching Star trek. Well the young ones are here watching Star Wars.”
  • First lines of the text it says: "’Live long and prosper’ is what the Star Trek characters wish to each other, and that’s precisely what the producers want to give to the followers with this new entry of the saga, number eleven, which gives this science fiction story a rejuvenating lifting.”

Tve1 (National TV) [includes video]

  • In the video Zoe says she learned the Vulcan salute five years ago from Spielberg. JJ says he was a fan of Star Wars, and Quinto says he was scared of Spock’s ears as a child.
  • Article opinion: “It looks like the Enterprise still has some missions ahead”

RTVE  (National TV) [includes video]

  • In video Zoe Saldana makes the Vulcan salute and says (in her perfect Spanish), that she learned the Vulcan salute five years ago from Steven Spielberg

  • Also, Quinto says that he was terrified by Spock’s ears as a child, but he loves them now

Público

  • Again mostly the same kind of overview, but a couple of notable quotes..
  • “The gigantic noteblock in which he writes and which he hides with care could be sold for a fortune on the internet. In it, J.J Abrams stores all his secrets, from strange drawings doodled in a hurry, which seem to be timelines, to ink spots describing characters which will one day be in a new successful movie or TV series.”
  • “Nimoy had said he would never make a sequel again, but after reading the script he changed his mind. “If he said no, we where screwed”, joked the director.

Europa Press

  • Mostly same kind of coverage, with some new quotes…
  • Abrams: “I feel like someone who has arrived very late to a party” says the director with irony, who assured after this film he feels “much close to the trekian universe”.
  • Eric Bana jokes with the press: “ Abrams sold Nero to me as a romantic leading man. He was probably talking about the sequel.

Plllleeaqsae let this film do well….please oh please oh please.

Bueno nada mal, que hay de suramerica? First ;-)

Wow the guys must be so tired by now. London 2mora. can i make it i wonder

Anyone else think JJ stil kinda looks like a Vorta?

Nice wrap up.

…it’s getting closer.

Can’t wait!!

I want to thank Ignacio and the people at Base Estalar Nexus for putting this together. It has been fun working with Trek fans and journalists around the world to bring all this global coverage.

By the time I actually do the LA event, it will be like our 10th report from the tour, but I’ll still be there

JJ does not look like a Vorta.

Sweet. I like their movie poster. I am not a fan of ours. Some people can’t tell what ours is.
I am excited about this film. IGN UK has a review up for the movie. They liked it, but they seemed to be confused by the story. They also had some complaints about the ‘lack of peril’ due to the confusing plot. Or something or other. Minor complaint I think. I think most people will be able to keep up with this film and enjoy it for what it is. The reviewer did enjoy the film.

Can’t wait!

Woooooah.

I never thought of that.

He kinda *does* look like a vorta.

Huh.

Anthony, I saw the movie and would like to ask your opinion on a couple of points. Can’t discuss openly as they’re spoilerific! Is there an email address I can get you on?

Cheers,

Lance

I have to say, I was originally sceptical of all the secrecy (remember that?), but these guys (and gal) have truly hit the streets to get the word out for the film.

Getting early reviews out has been a positive boon in this connected world. Wolverine and Terminator have no buzz at all at this point except “leaked pre-FX footage” and re-shoots for the former, and Christain Bale’s famous F-bomb-laced rant for the latter. I’ve had MTV on this lazy Sunday, and the TV spots are running constantly. Go, Go Star Trek!

4 & 10:

slick back the hair and whack on the ear extensions and definitely! If it’s good enough for Jeffrey Combs and Iggy Pop…. ;P

JJ selling the film to non Trekkies always reminds me of Weyoun trying to sell the Dominion to Sisko… (yeah I said Trekkies, not Trekkers, I’m a Trekkie and damn proud of it!)

An Tour Of Latin America when?????????????????????
An Tour Of Latin America when?????????????????????

An Tour Of Latin America when?????????????????????

Latin America Exists.

They must be getting tired!

They all look tired. Better rest up before coming back to the US and going on the talk shows

4. Great call. He definitely looks like a Vorta. Hilarious.

Will they be stopping on Vulcan for their press tour? If word gets out there about the events in this movie, they are going to be p*$$&#!

Got my tickets for May 7th IMAX here in Houston @ 9:55 pm, anybody in the area wants to join me that’d be cool, let me know and I will give you my email…

My impression of myself after seeing the movie, ala Lisa Simpson:

“So how was it?”

“Ehh, it wasn’t that good…”

“Come on…”

“It was the greatest event of my life!!! And the cameos!!!! Leonard Nimoy, Winona Ryder, Ben Cross…of course, they didn’t use their real names, but you could tell it was them!!”

I also want to know why they didnt make any kind of event in South America. Star Trek, also known as “Viaje a las Estrellas” in the countries that speak spanish, or “Jornada nas estrelas” in Brazil, was always very popular in this side of the world. In the nineties, with the popularity of TNG, the movies, DS9 and VOY, a lot of fan clubs emerge in a society where is not common any kind of fan club. I mean, Star Wars barely has fans organized, but Star Trek has (had) a lot of fans and a lot of clubs in all the region. And there were conventions, and some artists came (William Shatner was in a convention in Buenos Aires). So, I´m not asking for a premiere with all the gang, but at least a press conference, at least in one country, will make people realize that a new movie is coming out, and generate some interest in it. There is not great promotion for the movie, no posters, no tv spots, just the trailers in the theaters. In contrast, Transformers 2 has a lot of promotion, in the theaters and the media, with months of anticipation. I really want this new Star Trek movie do well and had a lot of success, but in South America, and in Argentina (where I am), only the fans knows is coming. And in a country where all the series were always succesful, (much more than in Spain, for example), that´s just not well.

#4–I never noticed it, but yeah, he does look a lot like a Vorta!

#13–I totally agree with your assessment of JJ vs Weyoun. And yes I also am damn proud to be a TREKKIE!

They looked very very tired.

Zoe and Pine need a week of sleep at least.

I live near London but sadly can’t get to go to the premiere which really sucks.

It’s cool they’ve all been to all those place on the tour but I should think the down side of it all is having to give the same answers to the same questions which can’t be helped because that’s what it is all about. They must be all wearing thin by now.

#4, #10, #18, #22

Actually, I always figured he looks a lot like the pictures of my Dad from the 1960’s, even the eyeglasses. I’m wondering if JJ owns a red 1965 Pontiac too….

@22:

nice to see i’m not the only one! I forgot to add that the JJ/ Weyoun evil aspect comparison doesn’t bother me, the guys gotta try and get as many asses on seats come may as possible and he can say what he likes to achieve that. otherwise we’ll all be stuck watching our dvd’s in our basements for the next 50 years!

All we need now is for him to say:

“I hate Ferengi….” lol!

#7 Anthony

You know where we are.

Me gusta Espana mucho!!!!!! 8D

VIVA ESPANA.

They have already left the UK? where are they heading to now?
