275. It is not religion. It is off base, IMHO, especially when it happens several times in the same scene. It is annoying and breaks the moment. In Blade Runner, even in Babylon 5 no. In Trek, yes.

#275:"Stop having holy cows when you don’t need to. Trek is not a religion. Trek is not sacred. Nothing they are doing is morally wrong or even off base."

Well said.

Has it flashed across the minds of you people that product placement isn't always about the advertising money?

This is the future. A possible future. This movie was partially about world building, bringing in new people - it makes perfect sense to reference things we know now as having survived and prospered up to when the film takes place.

Some of the original vision in Trek needs to remain beyond character and ship names for me to stay onboard. For me that involves the retention of some of the original vision. That vision, in my opinion, incorporates optimism, great characterization (the first two which this looks to have), the spirit of exploration and discovery, a certain level of multiculturalism (whether it involves we earthlings or our newfound alien friends), mixed with an idea or two. If Trek devolves into zappity zap space battles (not that there can't be any, but there should be more to a Trek movie than this) and lousy and numerous product placements they have lost one fan and, I'm guessing legions more. Who knows? Maybe they don't care and hope to replace old fans with new.

As I said, I'm not castigating a film I haven't seen, but this is what I expect and hope for. With some of the news I'm thrilled at other moments I'm skeptical. I guess I'll find out sometime after May 8th.

272. No, that Michelob was in 20th century Earth where it belonged and they didn't add a dozen other name brands to the mix (I'll have a Jack and a Bud Classic, oh wait a moment, my Nokia Tricorder is bleeping). It mucks up the feeling of the future, as in the Star Wars prequel train wrecks when our "galaxy far, far away" had obnoxious sports announcer parodies at the podraces and 1950s style diners with robots named 'Flo'. It didn't fit the context and this doesn't either. It is blatant, annoying, and distracting.

If this were contemporary or even the near future (Blade Runner) I would accept it. If it were modestly done (like the Michelob) I could accept it. This has not been in the Trek 23rd and 24th century universe up until now and it should stay out.

Really hate that Trek has opened to the bold new world of product placement. Blech! Next we'll see the Golden Arches replacing the delta shield on the Enterprise uniform. I'll take a half-sized film budget over that b.s. anyday, especially when it is so blatant and obnoxious.

Otherwise, OK. I'm reserving judgment. I'm a hopeful skeptic.

Loved the bit about Uhura's first and last name and Sulu's combat training.
