This movie was partially about world building, bringing in new people - it makes perfect sense to reference things we know now as having survived and prospered up to when the film takes place. Stop having holy cows when you don't need to. Trek is not a religion. Trek is not sacred. Nothing they are doing is morally wrong or even off base. Has it flashed across the minds of you people that product placement isn’t always about the advertising money?

This is the future. A possible future. This movie was partially about world building, bringing in new people – it makes perfect sense to reference things we know now as having survived and prospered up to when the film takes place.

Stop having holy cows when you don’t need to. Trek is not a religion. Trek is not sacred. Nothing they are doing is morally wrong or even off base.

For me that involves the retention of some of the original vision. That vision, in my opinion, incorporates optimism, great characterization (the first two which this looks to have), the spirit of exploration and discovery, a certain level of multiculturalism (whether it involves we earthlings or our newfound alien friends), mixed with an idea or two. If Trek devolves into zappity zap space battles (not that there can't be any, but there should be more to a Trek movie than this) and lousy and numerous product placements they have lost one fan and, I'm guessing legions more. Who knows? Maybe they don't care and hope to replace old fans with new. As I said, I'm not castigating a film I haven't seen, but this is what I expect and hope for. With some of the news I'm thrilled at other moments I'm skeptical. I guess I'll find out sometime after May 8th.
