41, make sure you give Stephanie Meyer and that huge foreheaded cast of "Twilight" some anger and bile too. Talk about media overkill, angsty teen gothism, and bad acting/storytelling spewing forth another heartless, Hot Topic friendly look at vamps.

Give me Bela! ANY day of the week. But more than Bela, give me Carlos Villarías, the really scary Dracula from the 1931 Spanish language version that was shot concurrently with Tod Browning's film. Or Max Shrek in "Nosferatu". These were vamps, not Tom Cruise, Robert Pattinson, or Alan Coombs.

Sounds like Del Toro has a good take on vampires.

They should be horrible, disgusting, scary monsters. They're metaphors for death and disease, which are not sexy things.

Anne Rice & Co. ruined a perfectly awesome monster. They took a death & disease metaphor and made it about kinky sex and angsty self-pity. These days, the zombie (Day/Dawn of the Dead, 28 Days/Weeks Later, etc.) fill the niche and possesses most of the attributes vampires used to have before Lugosi, Hammer Films, Anne Rice, and sad little gothlings gayed up vampires beyond all recognition. Is it any wonder zombie movies tend to be way more entertaining than vampire flicks?

If anybody can make vampires cool, scary monsters again Del Toro could. He seems to get it.

If only he could be convinced to channel his powers into a good Conan movie....

I'm disappointed that the makers of the Land of the Lost movie seem to have little respect for the original tone of the show.

"we wanted to get away from the kitsch value and make the action and adventure part look real and then have the comedy play off that."

The comedy? The original was NOT a comedy (unlike other Saturday morning fare like the Flintstones or the Jetsons which were also made into movies). My cynical read here is that the studio was just looking for a nostalgic "vehicle" to insert Will Ferrell into and they found it with LOTL and are willing to turn it into a slap-stick farce. While the original was for kids, it had a mind-expanding imagination, a sense of wonder, and a good and sophisticated (for the audience) moral compass.

If I had my way, a LOTL remake would be much more like LOST -- full of the mystery of the dinosaur age and a lost civilization.

While the movie may still be good for whatever it turns out to be, it seems to have no chance of being close to the original LOTL.

33. S. John Ross

Well, you were referring to Moffat keeping to new monsters. Meanwhile his predecessor has overseen the digging out of as many old monsters imaginable. I mean, the Macra?!!!! I was simply comparing them based on the Moffat remark. I'm looking forward to Moffat's era!

You don't have to get defensive, mate, I was just chatting! :)

#36: Cool, that's interesting ... I've got a copy of The Writer's Tale, but I've never managed to face down the task of actually reading it ...

At this point, I'm all for whatever Moffat and team decide to do, either way. I have a lot of confidence in Who's future; it'd take a pretty intensely bad season to shake me of that :)

Hi John Ross,

Can't remember where I read it, might have been The Writers Tale by Russell T Davies. But Davies thought Moffat wouldn't be interested in revisting any of the old enemies so it wouldn't matter what Davies did in his final few episodes with them; but Moffat surprised him by saying he has plans to continue using classic Who villains.

I think it explains why we didn't see Davros die, and why the Cybermen where transported away rather than destroyed in the recent Xmas special. Davies has to keep them around because Moffat intends to continue using them.

Caprica is not getting my time and attention after I invested all those years into BSG.

After the show is off the air, if the reviews were good I'll get them out on DVD from the library. That's the best Ron Moore is getting from me this go-around.
