ST09 Tidbits (T-9): Greenwood To Vulcan + Private Screening Auction + Baseball Trek + Sneak Peeks + more April 28, 2009

by Anthony Pascale , Filed under: Great Links, Star Trek (2009 film) , trackback

The Tidbits is now in single digits! And today we have more news on that Vulcan premiere, which we have learned will have a special guest. Also how would you like a private screening next Thursday?…you can have one (if you win an auction). We also have reports on the Star Trek night at yesterday’s Giants game and the French premiere on Sunday. All that plus more Tivo alerts and even more.

Reminder: Tickets available online (including IMAX)
As we will begin every tidbits, we remind you that you can now buy advanced tickets (including early shows) for Star Trek at Fandango. You can also get tickets for IMAX at Fandango. And by buying your tickets from Fandango, you are supporting TrekMovie.com. For locations that don’t have tickets available through Fandango, try movietickets.com.

Greenwood to Vulcan
As we reported last month, the people of the small town of Vulcan, Alberta, Canada are getting a special preview of Star Trek. TrekMovie has got early word on the details for the event. Due to the small town having no theater, 300 Vulcans (Vulcanians) will be brought to private screening in Calgary on May 6th and TrekMovie has learned that Canadian Bruce Greenwood, Captain Pike himself, will be in attendance. Seventeen months the Canadian Vulcans began a campaign to get the premiere be the location for the world premiere of Star Trek, an ambitious goal for a town without a movie theater. However last month Paramount (with the support of Leonard Nimoy) decided that they still wanted to the Vulcans to get something special, and a visit from a film star (and native son) with an early premiere is pretty cool.

Charity Auctions for L.A. Private Screening & Abrams signed poster
Paramount has arranged two Star Trek charity auctions. The first is is for a private screening at the Arclight Theater at 5PM on May 7th. The winner of the auction can bring 25 friends to the screening and each will get a some Star Trek goodies (shirt, cap, & trading cards). The second auction is for a JJ Abrams signed Star Trek lithograph. Both auctions are up at EBay:

Report from Star Trek Movie Day at AT&T Park
Last night Esurance held a special Star Trek movie night at AT&T Park before the game between the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Prior to the first pitch being thrown out there was an Ultimate Trekkie Costume Contest on the field with the 7 finalists down on the field and the winner was Cindy from San Francisco who painted herself green. The evening kicked off with a Welcome Message from J.J. Abrams to the fans followed by the movie trailer. The evening consisted of Star Trek Trivia via in-game features and "text to win" games as well as a Star Trek Movie Night Cam that found fans in the crowd with their vulcan salute foam fingers.  There was also a raffle which included prizes like baseballs signed by Chris Pine and Zach Quinto as well as some Trek/Esurance tshirts. Here are some pics:

Report from French Star Trek Premiere – Lindelof intros movie [submitted by Eric]
On Sunday the French premiere of J.J. Abrams’s Star Trek was held during the Jules Verne Festival in Paris. At 9 pm following a Battlestar Galacica event with show stars Mary McDonnell, James Callis and Jamie Bamber, the co-creator of the festival came on stage and started by a brief history of the franchise before introducing Star Trek producer Damon Lindelof. Damon said a few words, thanked the festival for allowing the premiere to take place and concluded (with a smile) "If you like the movie, tell your friends. If you don’t, stay silent!" After the big theater went dark the first 2500 French people to see Star Trek were presented with a surprise recorded greeting from JJ. Abrams himself, saying hello to the audience of the Jules Verne Festival and hoping that they would like the film. Experiencing Star Trek in such a place was a glorious experience indeed. There was some applause at a couple of key moments during the screening as well as at the end when the final credits started.

Tivo Alert: Sneak peeks on LOST and FRINGE
JJ Abrams is putting his shows to good use. During tomorrow’s Lost and during next weeks Fringe there are going to be exclusive sneak peeks at the new Star Trek movie. Right now it isn’t clear if these will actually be brand new stuff or just stuff from the recently released clips and traielrs, but it is worth recording just in case.

Trek TV Talk Show Blitz – UPDATE
Also we have an update to our list of Star Trek luminaries on the talk show circuit, here is the latest list:

Pegg on Ross
Speaking of talk show appearances, here is Simon Pegg on Jonathan Ross last Friday.

Finally: This Aint Star Trek XXX Trailer
We previously reported that some folks were cashing in on the Star Trek buzz, one of which is Hustler with their porn parody This Aint Star Trek XXX, which comes out May 12th. Today Hustler sent over the box art and alerted us about their new trailer (by the way, does getting sent a press release from Hustler mean I have finally made it as a media journalist?). The trailer is kind of funny and safe for work:

2. The Governator - April 28, 2009

We’re getting closer…..Oh so close.

3. TheBigCW - April 28, 2009

Let me get this – Hustler can make a film called “This Aint Star Trek XXX” and have no problems with CBS/Paramount because it’s consitered “Parody:….

I guess after they got away with doing their XXX “Not The Brady Bunch” they figured they could get away with it!

Strange world we live in.

4. Captain Jack Bauer - April 28, 2009

Hey, found another talk show appearance:

Wednesday 5/6 “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” J.J. Abrams

5. Negotiator - April 28, 2009

The Tonight Show, the number one late night show only gets Cho?

Kimmel gets all the principals and JJ?

WTF?

6. Brad - April 28, 2009

I guess you can’t even use the word “pron” in it’s correct form on the talkbacks. lol.

Yea, XXX Trek looks pretty good aktuwally!!

7. lodownX - April 28, 2009

I booked the day off work… I can’t believe I’m telling everyone at work I booked Friday off because I have to see Star Trek… twice… but its true… and I’m proud.

8. Thomas - April 28, 2009

I can’t sit through The View, not even for Leonard Nimoy.

9. MORN SPEAKS - April 28, 2009

Star Trek is kinda becoming cool? I never thought I’d see the day.

10. JimJ - April 28, 2009

I’m taking Friday off, too. I may see it again that day though I’ll see it Thursday eve and Saturday at IMAX. Who knows how many times I’m gonna see this thing. I think my record for a Trek movie is 12 times in a theater, so we’ll see.

11. Trekkie626 - April 28, 2009

Anyone else notice that the Bussard collectors on the newsweek cover are missing?

12. Skippy2k - April 28, 2009

Me too, I actually scheduled thursday the 7th and friday the 8th…then went ahead and took the following week as vacation! I have plenty of time to rewatch it now and some friends are coming in from out of town to meet up and see it.

13. Brad - April 28, 2009

9 – whow whow whow now!!! Slow down big boy!! We won’t know if Trek is cool until AFTER the movie comes out. If it bombs, Trek still isn’t cool. If it’s a success, it still don’t mean it’s cool. For that, only time will tell. (I sure hope this movie increases Trek’s cool-factor though!!)

14. DJT - April 28, 2009

The geek shall inherit the earth…

Just saw next weeks Fringe preview

Balok dude….”I’m the son of Sarek”

Other dude ….”So you’re Spock?”

Great.

15. Skippy2k - April 28, 2009

11. Yeah I noticed that, looks like the Art Asylum/DST enterprise (comparing to the one sitting to my left)? What did they do to it, missing collectors and taped up on the bottom. :)

16. darrksan - April 28, 2009

I guess the JJ zombie yuppies going to run see the parody Star Trek…. the parody opens May 08 2009.

17. garen - April 28, 2009

11 and 15

they may have purposely given the ship a “played with” look…to imply that the child has been getting a lot of good use out of this toy. and in the meantime..learning to dream big

18. Spock's Uncle - April 28, 2009

#11:

Yeah, what’s up with that? Couldn’t anyone find a decent model of ANY version of Big E? Geesh… no Bussard Collector covers, regardless of color, would send Scotty over the deep end…. “She’ll break apart, Captain!”

Tickets in pocket, 7pm showing, May 7. Ahead Warp 9!

19. Pd18 - April 28, 2009

I’m going to a screening on Saturday morning. 10:00 this Saturday morning, I’m going to see Star Trek. I can’t believe that after 2+ years of rabid anticipation, I’m only 4 days away from finally seeing it. Even my wife wants to go with me. Trek has always been the line that she would not cross, but she admits the trailers look good. I think she’ll be a good litmus test for the general movie going public.

20. DonDonP1 - April 28, 2009

Fascinating. Sorry for being curious, but to those who have seen last night’s San Francisco Giants game against the Los Angeles Dodgers: Which salute have you rendered during the playing of our national anthem “The Star-Spangled Banner”–the “heart-touching” (by “heart-touching”, I meant “hand-over-heart”) civillian salute or the Vulcan salute?

21. MrData - April 28, 2009

Well I just went see the movie today…
It is perfect…
Not gonna spoil anything, just perfect…

22. Capt. Roykirk. - April 28, 2009

Hustler’s + Star Trek? Um, what?? Somethings just shouldn’t happen.

Yeah, you would would think they could find a model with the ramscoops, but oh well, you can still tell it’s the NCC-1701.

And what’s with that lithograph? It looks like a characture of the new Enterprise. Which looks like a characature to begin with.

23. shadow - April 28, 2009

Was that Miley Cyrus in the waiting room with Pegg? That must’ve been awkward…

24. Evan - April 28, 2009

11. I did. What’s up with that?

25. Jonny Boy - April 28, 2009

A new entry in the Path to 2409 timeline is up for 2387. This is the turning point. Frakkin’ awesome. Between Countdown and this, I’m jonesing for the movie even more.

26. Mr Lirpa - April 28, 2009

Got tickets for a 12pm showing on the 6th at my local cinema, and I don’t mind admitting that I’m taking a day off work to indugle, the truth is that I’ve already booked more tickts for saturday too!

27. Devon - April 28, 2009

#16 – Troll

28. Cobalt 1365 - April 28, 2009

Can’t take Friday off, have midterms. Can’t take thursday off, have quizzes. *groan

29. Alex - April 28, 2009

My next phone :) truly.
http://www.tube5800.com/nokia-5800-star-trek-limited-edition-announced/

30. Anthony Thompson - April 28, 2009

Kimmel (or someone on his staff) seems to love Trek. Letterman apparently doesn’t.

31. Redwolf_1701-A - April 29, 2009

A friend of mine here at work went to a special screening here in the UK last night. He was not too keen to go, but they were free so he went. He has never seen Trek before but was blown away. He loved it. He was buzzing so much this morning he had to come over and tell me. Now us mere mortals have to wait until next week. But this does bode well that someone who had no interest in seeing the film LOVED it. I cannot wait now.

32. Chris Rod - April 29, 2009

MmmMmM!! Jenna Haze…. she is SOO fine! ,,mmm!

and that Pegg interview was great..he is scotty now.. they are.. the crew of the United Star Ship Enterprise.. this is so amazing..! :)

Who can ask for anymore?
Who can have more?

33. Rastaman - April 29, 2009

#29 – don’t do it!!! Nokia’s batteries suck to high heavens … or maybe it’s just my phone.

34. Brad - April 29, 2009

#29 – Get an iPhone instead. It’s 1,000 times better than that Nokia piece of garbage!

35. charliebob - April 29, 2009

In the Friday Night with Ross clip, the clip of star trek they show is the first moment scotty is on the bridge. The clip where spock asks how they got aboard.

36. Holger - April 29, 2009

11, 15, 17, 18: Maybe they tried to toss the model and get a mid-air snapshot (an old fake UFO-shot trick). After several unsuccessful tries they abandoned the plan and made this picture :-)

Have my ticket in pocket, too. Will be there on Wed 05/06, 8pm Central European Time, wearing velour.

37. ShatPine - April 29, 2009

You know if paramount wanted do, they could have put all this money and time behind all the star trek movies, it makes me a little upset to see them promote this new movie and new cast like this, when they could have been doing all these promotions from the beginning.

38. Clinton - April 29, 2009

Have tickets for May 8 and May 9, and am hosting big Star Trek party on the 9th. Woohoo! Bring it on!!!!

39. bmar - April 29, 2009

I have to laugh at the quantity and quality of the sets in that Hustler/Star Trek clip. They give James Cawley a run for his money! ;)

40. afterace - April 29, 2009

#34 – I now this ain’t time and place for this, but I have to say that actually the iPhone is the most overestimated phone EVER. Nokia 5800 is actually miles more advanced, and it’s not even a top spec model.

41. SaphronGirl@hotmail.com - April 29, 2009

For anyone who missed Quinto on Letterman last night:

http://videos.zach-quinto.com/play.php?vid=125

Fabulous.

42. Julio - April 29, 2009

I wanna see Star Trek XXX in IMAX

43. JJ_roddenberry - April 29, 2009

Drive safe everyone, we’re so close to release and I don’t want anyone missing it!

44. I am Kurok! - April 29, 2009

Greenwood: I like him, his Pike seems a bit more ’seasoned’ than Hunter’s. Keep in mind that Hunter/Pike was set in the ‘Horatio Hornblower’ mode, with Kirk nowhere in sight.

Now the character-arc is focused on Kirk and we don’t have to deal with Pike’s issues, so we get a more ‘Fatherly’ Pike.

Someone should mint some buttons that say, ‘I like Pike.’ :-)

45. Selor - April 29, 2009

Somehow… I do feel a bit sad, that the Movie is coming next week… all the time of waiting, anxiously and full of expectations, the joy of philosophising about the new movie and the waiting time, awaiting joyfully every bit of information, every picture and every trailer and that all with you together… we stood together against all the hatefull, all those that have forsaken the movie even months before they see it…
Yeah, I feel a bit sad that these times are going to end soon… for all this there is one quote that fits perfectly:

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…”

46. Andy Patterson - April 29, 2009

Those idiots. Their sets and costumes look pretty good actually. And what’s his name isn’t a bad actor in that genre. But to think some people actually suggested him for Thor.

47. richpit - April 29, 2009

42. Julio

I wanna see Star Trek XXX in IMAX

LOL…me too!

48. I am Kurok! - April 29, 2009

45. My hat’s off to you: few people in the world have come to realize that much of the joy of an event is the anticipation of it. If Christmas were a surprise event, it wouldn’t be Christmas.

“Twas the night before Trek-movie, and all thing’s in order; tunic, Spock-ears and fully-charged tricorder…..”

LOL!

Have fun!

49. Trek Fan Forever - April 29, 2009

While I thought that Newsweek’s article was entertaining. I am disappointed that a reputable news magazine could would display such a beat up model of the Enterprise, which is one of Trek’s most identifiable icons. Seriously, missing bussard collectors is one thing, but the grey duct tape that’s taking it too far.

Off with their heads :)

Anyway, I am in such a frenzy for May 8th! Let the countdown and the movie and episode marathons begin!

50. The Original Animated Next Generation Deep Space Voyager Enterprise - April 29, 2009

Heh, Evan Stone as the parody of Captain Kirk…

51. Hat Rick - April 29, 2009

Yeah, the fact that the Bussard collector is missing is kind of disappointing. However, I don’t mind all that much, really. Star Trek is back on a newsmagazine cover — how cool is that? :-)

52. I am Kurok! - April 29, 2009

49. I thought the duct-tape Enterprise was interesting: represents an element of Star-Trek fandom that I’ve noted throughout the years-IMPROVISE!

I wonder if duct-tape will continue to be a toolbox must-have in the 23rd century.

53. Planet Pandro - April 29, 2009

Did anyone catch Eric Bana on the Today Show this morning? There was a new clip of him storming around on the Narada w/ the other Romulans. Other than that, nothing really new…although Ann Curry mentioned she used to have a crush on Mr. Spock…b/c of his personality and the two conflicting sides of him, human and vulcan, always at odds…she seemed to know her stuff!

54. Carlos Teran - April 29, 2009

To be honest, “This Aint Star Trek XXX” has some excellent sets… :P

55. SaphronGirl - April 29, 2009

52. (Planet Pandro)

// Ann Curry mentioned she used to have a crush on Mr. Spock…b/c of his personality and the two conflicting sides of him, human and vulcan, always at odds…she seemed to know her stuff! //

She was drooling all over poor Zach Quinto when he was on (either yesterday or Monday, I can’t remember). Hee!

56. Trekkie16 - April 29, 2009

I bought my ticket through Fandago and will be seeing it next Thursday at 7PM. 8 days and counting!

57. Bee - April 29, 2009

Saw it last night. Its amazing! Everyone will love it. Chris Pine plays Kirk brilliantly, lots of humor but without any cheese.

58. Crusade2267 - April 29, 2009

The greatest thing about that Newsweek piece is definitely the Obama/Spock article. There’s a great pic of NimoySpock done in the Obama-Hope poster style, and they really go overboard casting members of the current administration as Star Trek characters. (They also cast members of the last one as Star Wars characters, focusing mainly on the Empire.)

59. frederick - April 29, 2009

Man, this is a good time to be a trek fan and alive… I can’t remember ever seeing the amount of Trek love in all the media like this!

60. LordCheeseCakeBreath - April 29, 2009

The lens flares are a bit over the top. Someone was actually shining a light on the lens of the camera! The bad news is that we can’t hit the undo button. Oh well. I was hoping for a more timeless approach not a trendy pro reality tv style.

Nevertheless I’m hoping for a visually stunning movie…I’ll be sure to bring my sun glasses. The lens flares will make me chuckle!

61. SPOCKBOY - April 29, 2009

GREAT STUFF!
By the way, I FINALLY figured out who the alien reminded me of….
http://tinyurl.com/c3r8gp
: )

62. Chadwick - April 29, 2009

Sasha Grey as a vulcan in Star Trek XXX eh..hmmm might just have to watch it.

@53. Carlos Teran. I thought that as well!

63. Captain Dunsel - April 29, 2009

#11 “Anyone else notice that the Bussard collectors on the newsweek cover are missing?”

That’s a “Battle Damage” Enterprise… (There’s even “emergency hull plating” on the engineering section. It just *looks* like duct tape.)

64. I am Kurok! - April 29, 2009

59. This is bigger than the hoopla in ‘79 when ST TMP came out

….but I don’t think I’ll be disappointed this time. I remember watching the movie and thinking ‘THIS is it? a re-hash of NOMAD and cheesy computer graphics??’

I will say that Persis Khambatta was an absolute babe: made me re-think bald women ( ! )

65. Peter N - April 29, 2009

I like Simon Pegg – he’s a good bloke! Looking forward to seeing his take on Scotty. So far there has not been too much video material released that gives us an “in” on his performance. But I hear it will be good….

66. Elrond L - April 29, 2009

Yes, Anthony, you have offically arrived. :-)

The only part that sucked about “Star Trek night” in SF was that our Giants lost to the hated Dodgers.

And my Newsweek arrived last night! Can’t wait to read it. Listen, I don’t care about the ship details on the cover, it’s just awesome that Star Trek is relevant again!

67. AdamTrek - April 29, 2009

My previous post was DOA. What happened?

68. Michael Foote - April 29, 2009

Got my tickets last night for the first local showing on Thursday. Can’t wait.

69. I am Kurok! - April 29, 2009

65. I’ve seen Simon Pegg’s work-like it, and he’s been in contact with J. Doohan’s son, Chris since landing the role. He seems to have the same philosophy as the rest of the cast regarding the characters so I expect good things from him too.

Zoe Saldana’s Uhura is edgy, reminiscent of the scenes with Sulu in ‘Mirror Mirror’ and her pulling a phaser on the young ensign in ST3, but I’m also hoping to see some of that ’softness’ that Uhura had in TOS, which was part of what made her very appealing on a ‘visceral-level.’

70. falcon - April 29, 2009

Watching the Texas Rangers hosting the Oakland Athletics last night – during the period in the bottom of the 8th when Oakland had to change pitchers due to injury (again), I heard the music from the Star Trek trailer being played over the ballpark speakers.

Trek being played at the Ballpark in Arlington. That’s cool. Maybe it helped the Rangers win (and get back to .500). Texas is not what you’d consider a Trekified state (even though GR himself was born in El Paso, which – as our tourism billboards boastfully state – is closer to California than it is to Dallas).

71. Andy Patterson - April 29, 2009

70

Hey man….I’m fifiteen minutes from the ballpark. I’m “Trekified”. Maybe not every man on the street but I think you underestimate a little.

72. Closettrekker - April 29, 2009

#70 and #71—-H-Town Trekkie here!

You can count “Shatner_Fan_Prime” and “Spock’s Brain” among us as well. And let’s not forget the AICN guys down in Austin.

Texas is far too diverse not to have its share of Trek fans.

73. frederick - April 29, 2009

I can deal much better with missing nacelle caps than I could if they used the new ship model on the cover! glad they didn’t. The silhouette would look like how a 3rd grader might draw the ship from memory.

74. frederick - April 29, 2009

#58…
re, casting white house staff as Trek crew, it’s been done before to good effect. Check out the Nat’l Lampoon Trek comic I posted today…

75. Quatlo - April 29, 2009

So Larry Flynt is a trekkie.

76. The Original Spock's Brain - April 29, 2009

3. TheBigCW – Yep, U.S. law protects them in this case.

77. AJ - April 29, 2009

Did we all read the Sunday NY Times article?

78. The Original Spock's Brain - April 29, 2009

Trying to get a group of H-town Trekkers to go see it at the Edwards Houston Marq*e IMAX, Friday, May 8. 9:55 p.m.

79. Shatner_Fan_Prime - April 29, 2009

#78…I’d be down for it, but I’ve already got tix for that day at the Edwards off 59. IMAX will be my next viewing after that.

80. The Original Spock's Brain - April 29, 2009

Hate the parking situation at the other Edwards/59.

81. Shatner_Fan_Prime - April 29, 2009

#80 … Understandable. But my main film geek buddy swears they have the best digital projection. We always go there because of him.

82. KJTrek - April 29, 2009

What’s up with the bussard collectors on that model for the Newsweek covers? It looks like they got ripped off or something…

83. Closettrekker - April 29, 2009

#81—-The wife has actually relented and agreed to go to see the movie, but only if we wait until the 8th (and I have to see X-Men with her, not so bad). I’m going with her on Friday night (Katy Mills Mall), and with the boys on Saturday or Sunday afternoon (IMAX on I-10).

It seems ESPN (97.5 The Ticket) is done giving away tickets for May 2nd. I still never heard where that exclusive screening is being held, but they gave away sets of tickets everyday last week. I never could be the 5th caller.

84. Steve J. - April 29, 2009

I remember a XXX “Next Generation” parody from several years ago. As I recall, the captain’s name was “Pr*ckhard” or some such…

85. The Original Spock's Brain - April 29, 2009

84. Steve J. – That’s baaaaaaad! lol

86. Smitty™ - April 29, 2009

Very nice production values on that Trek p*rn parody.

It gives Phase II a run fot its money!

All due respect to James Cawley…

87. MistySteele - April 29, 2009

OMG I live in Calgary, I may have to find a way to hijack my way into that preview. Or just hang around outside and beg for an autograph.

88. Spock, you rascal you - April 29, 2009

My first model of the Enterprise was , I believe a AMT kit I built in 67 or 68 when i was 11 or 12. After all the playing, carrying, and adventuring with that ole model it too had some tape on it and MANY missing parts. Hey this was before video games and 127 TV channels , we had something called imagination. I think this photo on the cover of NEWSWEEK is a perfect example of how the original show changed many a young childs life. I played hard with my Enterprise, just like the one in the picture. And it affected me so much, here I am 50 something, salivating in anticipation of using the movie ticket burning a hole in my wallet next thursday. Perfect pic for the change Star Trek brought to a generation.

89. Fubamushu - April 29, 2009

My post went DOA as well.

90. Capt. Roykirk. - April 29, 2009

Saw the “Sneak peek” during tonight’s LOST. It’s a longer clip of Kirk and the red monster on the ice world.

91. Jeffrey S. Nelson - April 29, 2009

Jonathan Ross is “alweddy excited!”
