Lens Flares, Lens Flares, Lens Flares everywhere!

I wonder who the people in the dark clothing/uniforms are in the academy scene.

May 7th can’t come soon enough…

Looking forward to it.

Looking mighty awesome! :D

Now THAT’S what I’m talkin’ about. I’m really seeing Pine as Kirk.

This is getting cooler – I can’t wait.

Question: Will the movie show how Kirk goes from cadet (presumably for 4 years) to captain? Seem pretty quick. Or will we see 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th year cadet Kirk?

wow, what an honor. This movie will be my first experience at an IMAX theater. I am looking forward to it, and hope to survive. Hope to see you there! Any of you close by that is. Im taking the entire family to it. ALL of them. How many seats are in an IMAX?

#7 “Kirk goes from cadet (presumably for 4 years) to captain”

It’s less. :-(

Is there a meet up planned for the 7pm showing at the Edwards Theater IMAX on May 8 in Houston, TX? I’m looking for all my Houston peeps!!

Hmmm….. Not bad

#9: “It’s less. :-(”

So will we see him graduate? Doesn’t canon state he graduates?

Cadets are wearing red! Look at all those redshirts…

#12, I believe Nero gave the answer in the trailer…

“James T. Kirk was a great man… But that was another life.”

#1 Lens Flares, Lens Flares, Lens Flares everywhere!

I was very concerned that I would be distracted by thel ens flares during the movie (I saw a press screening a couple of days ago). Believe me, it is no where near as bad as I expected it to be, and in a lot of cases really adds to the realism. I forgot all about it – except on the quite bright bridge.

I just want to point out that lens flares are what happen when you don’t plan on shooting and you haven’t prepared the lighting. It’s stylized documentary, war journalism–a natural progression from CLOVERFIELD.

#7 I hope we won’t see too much of him going through the Academy. Otherwise, it’ll seem like a “Harry Potter” approach to those years. I’d rather see highlights (i.e. Kobayashi Maru) or other important events, graduation, posting, etc.

So. Great. So. Awesome.

I like Kirk’s face when Sulu tells him he’s trained in fencing. xD

Another really great trailer. First told people here about it on Monday, when it initially aired on Heroes!

Saldana’s Uhura is so sexy and exudes self-confidence in that bar scene with randy JTK.

I believe the pundits that this film has a great ensemble that just ‘clicks’ together. That is a hallmark of great Star Trek.

Anyone know if the “Either we’re going down… or they are” line is actually in the film? It seems a little… ‘trailery.’

Several sources (and reviews) indicate the bar fight happens, Pike gets Kirk to enlist and then we jump 3 (THREE) years into the future, to a graduating Kirk. He completes the SFA… it’s a 3 year program.
Then he does one cool thing and becomes Captain–that’s the part I’m having trouble with.

It’s a four year program but kirk does it in three.

22 — I agree with you, at least it appears that way from the trailers. Some kind of field promotion based on heroism? I dunno — it does seem like quite a stretch.

We know he’s older than some of the other cadets, but I gotta believe that a hierarchical organization such as Star Fleet (if it actually existed) would still have rules governing promotion.

1 – I don’t even notice the lense flares anymore.

#22: That’s sound plausible. But I too am having the problem with “one cool thing”.

Oh my God!!! Just 8 more long and I mean long and excruciateing and torturous and agonising days till the Movie comes out!!! Im in Pain! and Agony!!!!. Please help me till then!!!!.

WRT the lens flares, I think (or hope) that the most severe examples were shown with the bridge clip previously posted. I’m getting used to them as well — it feels as if you’re in the middle of things — but I’d hate to see them used too often just for the sake of using them.

#22 :: Keep in mind that we are still talking about Kirk. We’re talking about the guy who evaded death so many times it made him seem invincible until the whole… mess with the nebula.

But I digress.

Call me crazy, but after seeing all the stuff Kirk went through during his five year mission (and beyond!) it wouldn’t surprise me that he’d advance to captaincy so quickly. He’s Kirk. He’s born to be that awesome.

We do know that they use the stardates and of corse theres a reference the Capt Archer or Admiral Archar. So i think a lot stays the same up to the point that the Narada attacks. Then things go to a different time line then the prime one we all know and love.

it is said that kirk was the youngest Capt in Starfleet in the 23rd century in the Prime Timeline. So it would be Logicle to assume that he would do it in the new timeline. he was the youngest capt in Starfleet till Capt Scott did it in the 24th century. But she was killed by the slugs or by a Phaser.

Doesn’t he sieze the captaincy on what could be called a technicality and then go on to save the world(a)? I find that acceptable and befitting an emerging hero story.

The cadet and grey uniforms look cooler then the classic trek uniforms,

Regarding lens flares:

Type in “Star Trek lens flares” in Google and you’ll find several sites with J.J. Abrams talking about the subject. He admits he might have gone too far in places. He also explains how and why he did it.

I don’t recall seeing any similar article on this site before, so if it’s already been published (but I missed it), please disregard.

Is there some point where they will have shown too much of this film and nothing will surprise????

23.

Correct. Pike tells Kirk he can finish the academy in 4 years and get a ship in another 4. Kirk says “I’ll do it (SFA) in three”.

OH MY GOD!!! Who really gives a care about Lens Flares???? I’m really sick about all the lens flare comments. Just don’t go see the movie if you care that much!

In the Uhura-at-the-Academy-assembly shot, I finally see Zoe as Uhura. She has Nichelle’s regal bearing, and check out those eyes!!! It just didn’t come through as strongly in the previous pictures.

23. It can be done. I went through university (B.A.) in three years and had my teaching certificate one term later. All by the time I was 21. A person with drive can do just about anything.

8 Days and 43 minuts. On the count down!!!!!!

Kirk even though was never realy mentioned did have a photographic memeroy. So with that and his drive he can easily do it in 3 years. otherwise he could not be the youngest capt in starfleet history in the 23rd century.

41: If it’s going to be distracting, then I’ll care. Yes, I want the film to feel “real,” as JJ Abrams has mentioned many times, but I simply hope that I don’t have to squint too much during those scenes.

And let’s face it, it IS a very minor thing. I have a very strong feeling, though, that I’m going to love the movie because of the story, the characters, and yes, the effects. I’m really hoping for the total package.

Hmmm… Well Daniel, looks like I was right.

Anyway, yeah, I can’t believe how close we’re getting. And yet, it still feels like an eternity away. I’ve got some friends joining me next Friday night. Should be fun, except that one of them is the Anti-Trek. But hey, maybe he’ll like it.

#32 :: That’s my understanding at this point.

But I haven’t seen the movie or every. Single. Spoiler. (Tempting, though!)

looking good

OK, so my last post should have referenced 37, not my own post of 41. Looks like a few posts were deleted.

Just bought the last ticket for the San Francisco IMAX show – both 7 & 10 PM are now sold out, can’t wait – see you there!

Sweet! I bought my Star Trek ticket today for a 7:30pm showing on May 7th! Yay! By the way, I love the effect and vibe the lens flares give. It just gives it character. I love it.

Wonder if that hearing scene is at the end of the movie and where they make Kirk Captain of the Enterprise.

What kind of combat training do you have?
-Fencing
*stare*

HAhaha. Brilliant.

7 more days. I can make it.

I am assuming that the “either we are going down or they are” line is in the Movie! I am so looking froward to May 7th at 7pm have several good friends joining me!
