Thanks for the interesting detailed update / info / links.
Pleased I managed to get there last July, a lucky last minute switch of holiday destination, having no idea that the STE was to be closed.
Only been the once and far exceeded my expectations.

In case anyone missed this:

http://www.lvrj.com/news/26826019.html

“CBS-Paramount helped shape the Experience and owns the intellectual property rights. So it will take back and lock up museum pieces, like Capt. Kirk’s costume and Spock’s coffin. It will consider hauling away entire spaceship bridges. But everything the studio doesn’t want will be destroyed, as contracts stipulate, to keep workers from putting any of it up for sale on eBay.” – Doug Elfman, LAS VEGAS REVIEW JOURNAL

What a nice propogation of a typo. It was RD's comment no. 231 and not 230 in:

http://trekmovie.com/2009/08/13/even-more-from-orci-kurtzman-on-linking-next-two-star-trek-movies/

to which I was responding in four parts.

I'm just glad I finally got the whole thing to post.

In response to RD’s comment no. 230 at:

http://trekmovie.com/2009/08/13/even-more-from-orci-kurtzman-on-linking-next-two-star-trek-movies/

where he said “Your statement suggests that CBS can shut down a licensee at any time…”

BEGIN PART FOUR

Let's keep an eye on hearing 63954:

http://hearings.state.nv.us/Calendars/09-Aug%203-Aug%207-HOLV.pdf

as more useful data is liable to come to light.

A reasonable conclusion as any you indicated seems to be that CBS was unhappy with Cedar Fair which had a license good to 2012 and, in effect, dropped them at their whim.

Now it is my opinion CBS shut down THE EXPERIENCE because they wanted to initiate the aforementioned theme changes to that and all the exhibits faster than was happening and removed what they perceived as an obstacle but the Sun reporting seems to indicate they may have other motivations. The lien story seems to indicate TLVH isn't putting the space to use. CBS licensing, in effect, isn't allowing Joshi use of any of his stuff. I'd say someone wouldn't be too disappointed to see the "upgraded" experience/exhibits return to their original "home".

FWIW the latest:

BEGIN PART THREE

Just look how CBS licensing dealt with Rohit Joshi. Even though the the initial exhibits were originally developed in stages at the Hilton itself CBS dictated all or nothing. This in spite of the fact that it seems clear CBS wants THE EXPERIENCE to implement a new ToS themed change to everything. A fat lot of good having a license did his reasonable plans:

(Apparently the posting hangup has something to do with the links cited. You are going to have to cut and paste to the following base address if you want to read the original LAS VEGAS SUN articles):

mar/16/new-life-new-civilizations-coming-neonopolis/

"As for Star Trek, Joshi has run afoul of CBS, which owns the Trek title and licensing rights by specifying just what will happen at Neonopolis." - John Katsilometes, LAS VEGAS SUN

apr/17/new-phase-no-may-8-opening-star-trek-experience-ne/

"The story is, CBS has essentially taken control of the Star Trek universe (Or is it galaxy? Whichever intergalactic term fits) and will not permit any phaser, I mean phase, of the attraction to open in conjunction with the movie’s release. Rohit Joshi, who heads the development team that owns Neonopolis, had hoped to bring in a gift shop and maybe bar/restaurant in May. However, CBS, which owns the "Star Trek" title and licensing rights, has a different time frame." - John Katsilometes, LAS VEGAS SUN

may/05/starship-enterprise-holding-pattern-over-neonopoli/

"The Experience won’t open until 2010 at the earliest, Rohit Joshi, head of the development company that owns Neonopolis, confirmed today. He added that the exhibit will not open in phases, but as a single entity." - John Katsilometes, LAS VEGAS SUN

If the Hilton had a use lined-up for the space as was suggested:

http://www.lvrj.com/business/51297162.html

Do you think they could have afforded to wait this long to fill it? Let alone, through inaction, allow a lien to get filed preventing said use?

This seems to allow the licensee/licenser power duo that you and S. John Ross seem to favor to rise to the top. I ask you, who do you think pushes who around in that arrangement?

In response to RD's comment no. 230 at:

where he said "Your statement suggests that CBS can shut down a licensee at any time..."

I'm going to try to post my reply in 4 parts to see if I can isolate whatever it is that's causing the comment system to swallow it.

BEGIN PART ONE

That's not exactly what I was suggesting. I was suggesting that the strength of their legal team and the nature of their licenses are such that they could, in effect, shut down a licensee at their whim.

I was aware of TrekMovie's coverage.

I'm glad you mentioned all that speculation as I believe it indicates the level of discourse you find acceptable in this and makes my response easier.

That Hilton leading accusation/speculation/rumor was always flatly denied with no substantiation of the blame ever produced. The falling attendance reason flies in the face of the original marketing ramp-up for ST09 for December which would have given them reason to anticipate increasing numbers.

I believe there's equally strong indications CBS set the dominoes in motion for their own reasons. I have an opinion what that reason was but I'll save that for later.

Let's look at what little evidence there is:

http://www.lvrj.com/business/22803789.html

"No one from the three organizations involved -- Cedar Fair, the Hilton or CBS -- took responsibility for the attraction's demise." - BENJAMIN SPILLMAN, REVIEW-JOURNAL

Now in my book, when you've got a 3-way denial-fest going on the mantle of responsibility of failure goes to the highest ranking officer: CBS.

I stand by my idea to take it out of Vegas and give it to a group of people who KNOW how to do a total immersion themed experience because they've been doing it for 54 years: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbOGbkHlyVw
