RE: High School
there was not much to put in...when he was talking about martial arts he talked about how he used to teach it at a certain high school, which turns out to be mine. We are just a few years apart, but i dont remember or know him. On the other hand I do remember Faran Tahir who went to the same college as me. We talked about mutual friends on the black carpet, but again didn't think it was much interest beyond the 'small world' mention

Khan should be played by Oded Fehr. I've been saying this for a while now. Look him up if you don't know who he is. I'm telling you... perfect casting.

27 The Happy Klingon

Yes, McCoy's calls out to Chapel and asks for some 'cordrazine' or something similar. And there is definitely a response from Chapel -- I think it was just a "Yes, Doctor". Couldn't tell if the voice was MBR or not.

@65 - Damn, that was funny! "I have no idea what I'm talking about" - Pine. "No, that would make them ****-heads." - Nimoy. (Still can't believe he could say that, but it was after "family hour," so...)

As for me, I've already written my admittedly brief review (spoiler-free, of course), and I may write a longer one on my blog (which I've ignored for a while), but to me, the film contained the essence of Star Trek. Frankly, I thought Trek truly began to die when TNG premiered. It had all the trappings of Trek, but none of the wonder (and action) of the original. It had some great moments, to be sure, but pretty soon it and its spinoffs began to treat the Federation and the Trek universe like just another space drama. And it alienated a lot of folks who thought you had to know all the backstory in order to enjoy the new shows. This new movie is different, in that it is Trek, but it does not require a doctorate in Trekkiness to enjoy. And it's not a parody of the original, either.

It could have been three hours long and still not long enough. Bring on the Director's Cut!

And as far as Nero's "villain-ness," let's remember one thing - Nero felt he was righting a wrong perpetrated by the Federation and Spock. How many of us have felt the same way about something someone has done to us? Does that make us a "villain"? To me, a villain is someone with evil intent from the beginning, no motiviation other than to do evil, and no redeeming qualities. Nero is bat-dung crazy over the destruction of his homeworld (who wouldn't be?) and doesn't listen to reason (yes, Romulus exists in the alternate past), but does that make him a villain? Or even a "bad guy?" His desires are obviously at cross-purposes with those of the Federation (namely, their survival), but all he does is provide the conflict which the crew of the Enterprise must resolve. That's why his casual greeting to Pike could be taken at face value and not seen as funny or goofy. Nero believes he has a job to do, and he's got a bigger hammer than the Federation, so he has the advantage (momentarily) - that is, until Kirk and Spock become the characters they're destined to be and save the day. (Come on, you knew they would.)

Sorry for going off-topic here, but there doesn't seem to be a more appropriate thread in which to ask this question, and I really want to know:

What happened to Diora Baird??

The only Orion that I recall seeing in the film was Uhura's roommate, played by the lovely Rachel Nichols.

Did Miss Baird's performance end up on the cutting room floor??

Did anyone see her in the movie??

According to Countdown, the Narada is for more than a mining ship with a drill. It has been infused with weapons from the "Vault" and took out an entire Klingon battle group with just its weapons before it traveled back in time.

Was the entire crew of the Narada captured by the Klingons? I really wish the 25 year gap was explained better.

Bana's performance was the best in the film, for me.

Which is not to take away from the performances of the other actors.
