Ok, I admit, I probably went slightly overboard with my thoughts, but this is supposed to be a democracy, you know, like the Federation. So should people be ambushed from almost all sides because they had a negative thing to say about JJ Abrams vision of Star Trek?

Or a such things considered treasonous now in this new age of fandom? That I personally did'nt agree with something in Star Trek? Am I expected to blindly love everything Trek? Looking at these comments, I half expect if my identity was known, I'd be taken out back and shot.

Seems to me this place is know like the Dominion. Our way, or the high way. Wait, do you people know who the Dominion is? You know, old Star Trek? 1990's Star Trek?

So I have decided to find my news elsewhere, and am off from this palce. So I shall leave with a quote from Spock, which was directed at the Vulcan Science Academy:

"Live Long and Prosper"

Of course, we know what Spock really meant.

I'm 14, and in a "GATE" classroom, which is pretty much the way they separate the nerds from the other kids.

Great, right?

Well, I can say that 3/4 of my class went to see it the opening weekend.

How do I know? When the teacher asked what we did this weekend everyone answered "Saw Star Trek" and those who didn't told everyone they were going this sunday, because there is a speech contest this saturday.

And half of them are doing Picard motivating.

I loved it!!!!

There is Scotty's cute little green guy bff for the kids, btw.

This is a friend of mine, but I just had to post it because I thought it gives a great way of seeing Star Trek from a kids perspective (Note: Ben and Kate are both under 10 years old):

I was shocked! Ben was excited about going to the movies, but when he heard what we were going to see - he crossed his arms and said “I have absolutely no interest in that!”

Then as they played the trailers for Transformers and GI Joe, he said “If STAR TRACK is anything like that, I’d be interested.” So I knew he was warming up. Before you know it, he was asking questions and laughing at “Bones.” It was like watching ice thaw! LOL!

Kate was much more optimistic. She was excited and laughed… and then the first time she saw Spock do his fingers, she was busy trying to get hers to part that way. She was awfully proud of herself when she figured it out!

Even the baby was kicking like crazy! We can’t wait for a sequel!

Hi there James I read the HA article last week. You are extremely luck to have met Mr. Nimoy and have him invite you to the opening. Most Trekkies only get to meet their favorite actors at a convention (and a conversation that lasts maybe 2 minutes)!

I don't agree that the movie is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but it's better than a lot of stuff that Hollywood comes out nowadays. Plus if the new Star Trek can steal fans (and kids!) from Star Wars, that must be worth something :o)

Oh how i envy you James your certainly a lot more mature than the 6th grades who followed me around on my third showing of the movie and pointed and laugh and called me Trekkie (which i ignored).

You are so lucky that Leonard Nimoy invited you to the movie premiere. I wish i was into Star Trek at your age compared to you i'm just a Trek NooB (I'm in my 2nd year of being a Trekkie and i'm only 17 years old). To be honest i agree and disagree with your Statement about how older trek fans will have a harder time adjusting to the changes. I'm 17, my favorite series is TOS and i thought the new movie did the characters justice (especially McCoy). I disagree because i believe after Nemesis (which i personally couldn't stay awake during the first time i watched it) people will find this film refreshing. I hope one day you end up working with Star Trek in one way or another.

Hmm, he has a couple bookshelves filled with Star Wars books and a half-shelf of Hairy Potter? Three figurines of the Dark Emperor from Star Wars? Pretty revealing about where his fanboy preferences are, at least as far as reading. This may be a comment on the quality of Trek books coming out, as the kid is clearly quite literate (notice the several Penguin Classics on the left shelf?). Gotta love the tribbles and the models, tho'. Must be nice...

Actually, his article was very kind to the premiere and well-written. I had to giggle when he wrote about how some older/original Trek fans would "have a hard time assimilating..." Reading a number of posts here, he's spot-on with that assessment! Scary how some posters noted that his writing abilities exceed their college students. Then again, this is the US...where the adult literacy rate is lower than that of Iraq.

The thing that keeps standing out about this whole experience is how much fun Nimoy is having, from his SNL appearances to the Austin premiere surprise, to the very generous gesture of taking this kid and his entire family to the premiere in Lollyhood.

I hope that a figure of Spock Prime will take a prominent place of honor on this kid's bookshelf ASAP!

Super job, James. I found your comment below very interesting:
<i>"I think that older fans might have a harder time assimilating the new technology and the new direction."</i>

Actually, I think those of us born before 1966 who grew up with Trek, probably accept the new technology and the new direction rather well. It seems to be those in the middle that have problems...

I've had 40+ years of enjoying Trek, so I know it's your turn. :) Hope you find a way to continue staying involved!

If so how did you like them? I loved them!

Awww, this must be one of the nicest reviews I've read. The kid has better grammar and overall writing skills than a lot of the adults who post on the internet these days, too. :p And he knows his Star Trek! Good job, James! (hey, were you named after Kirk? :p )

"Kirk thought older Spock was crazy." -- LOL.
