if the sequel going to do a Kirk-Spock-McCoy trio, i hope Uhura going to be a part of it so that way this Uhura can have more shine than she did in TOS.

I really enjoyed the subtle nod by Abrahms toward inter species relationships. (i.e. Scotty and the little alien dude). Talk about Trek at its best. Also, I totally agree about the Kirk eyes point. How could you have a captain who doesn't have Green eyes! Uhura should totally bang the little rock dude on the tranporter platform. Then scotty can get jealous and wipe her memory in an homage to the original series. They will have to retrain her mind, of course, but in doing so they'll change her first name to Idoya. Idoya Uhura.

I loved the movie, BUT, I think the writers interpretation of Spock sucked! Vulcans are apparently emotional and passionate, now? The story was simple minded and boring. If not for the special effects and my love for those characters, I wouldn't of liked the movie. Why do they always feel the need to write down to the audience. It took me YEARS to fully understand the quick witted dialogue of Star Trek II. Making the plot tough is what Trek is all about. How about a thought provocative plot!?

I would have preferred it if in this particular new universe that Spock had a relationship with "Nurse Chapel"...and where was she?

I thought Majel Barrett Roddenberry's character(s) (remember she also played "number one" to Captain Pike) should have gotten a nod here.

I'm not entirely sure we aren't already there.

The sequel should involve the mirror universe. It would be the perfect opportunity to involve Shatner and Nimoy in one last heroic farewell to the fans and the Star Trek legacy. Shatner would play the evil and older Tiberious; Spock would continue playing our beloved and knowledgeable Spock, but would be killed by the evil Tiberious at some point in the film. The climax of the movie would involve the young Kirk (Pine) in a death struggle with the evil Kirk (Shatner)...in a scene where the young Kirk is successful in redeeming and turning around the evil Kirk...who would subsequently die...in some effort of genuine sacrifice for the Enterprise and her crew. It would be moving and engaging! Bring it on, Paramount!

#69 "I found it pretty funny that Starfleet would make Kirk a Captain right away"
They did it out of embarassment, because when Vulcan and Earth were in danger:
1. the bulk of the Fleet was in the Laurentian Sector doing whatever
2. they managed to get nearly all of the year's Academy graduates killed at Vulcan
3. they found out too late that Vulcan's and Earth's defenses could be switched off easily, using a password every Starfleet captain knew (they couldn't know about Nero's earworm, but telepaths they knew before)

On top of this, Earth was saved by a maverick captain (he appointed a stowaway cadet Acting First Officer on a hunch) and a bunch of snot-nosed cadets and junior officers, consisting of: said stowaway, who was actually grounded for cheating in his exams; a Vulcan, who so totally lost it, he nearly killed somebody; a doctor who (temporarily) harmed his patient by infecting him with a disease; an engineer, whose most notorious previous achievement was dematerializing an admiral's beagle; a scientist, who left her post on the bridge to make out with her lover - twice; a pilot who forgot to loosen the brakes and, finally, a minor, who should not have been sent into a dangerous situation anyway (or did he get a note from his parents: "Our son Pavel has permission to boldly go ..."?)
- Hey, great idea for a sequel: ST:"Chekov gets legal" - it's the day before his 18th birthday, and Mama and Papa Chekov have revoked their permission. So he (and the crew) have to wait until midnight to save the universe - DRAMA! -
So, when the bunch mentioned above saves Earth, Starfleet Command is so embarassed, they give everybody a medal, the captain a promotion to admiral, and the crew a ship and tell them: "Now fly away and let's not talk about it again - not ever!" ;)
Btw, Kirk is 29 (he was 25 when he started at the Academy).
And yes, I liked the film.

#171: "The thing I don’t understand about the people that are criticizing the new Trek movie is that they say the new movie is nothing but an ‘action movie’. Yet the majority of Trek movies are no different, they’re essentially action movies!"

I agree (in general) with this, but the thing is, the original Kirk/Spock/McCoy movies made no pretense about returning to Trek's roots, to re-igniting TOS itself. All of them were moving forward, and where they were moving, for better or for worse, was distinctly different from the TV show. In most important respects, I feel that Star Trek (the show) has _never_ made it to the big screen.

So, I don't see it as contradictory to criticize the current film for being very heavily popcorn (unless you mean we should include a footnote every time to acknowledge that it's true of most other Trek films). The difference is, this time, the film was being sold (at least in part) as an energized return to the roots, and costumes aside, it really is another kind of step forward, for better or worse (I vote "both").

I'm one of those that think a great Star Trek movie - in the TOS sense, specifically - is achievable. I'd like to see it attempted someday.
