#47: I enjoyed that novel, just finished it 5 days ago. It was a welcome return to old style trek novels (in addition to a return to tos)

I have nearly every single trek book ever written and I can see patterns of where they shift back and forth between quantity (remember the genesis wave and fury and plague and gateway mini-series?) and quality. I miss Diane Carey and Diane Duane, two of my favorite trek authors and I haven't seen anything substantial from either of them in many years.

51: Fortunately, the worry that Trek will turn into a "war of the month club" is completely unrealistic. Did "Destiny" deal with a horrific war? Yes. Do most Trek novels published these days? No.

I figure that they're going to abandon the Star Trek Wars angle having dealt with the Borg threat in the Titan Trek Prime universe once and for all courtesy of the Star Trek Destiny series; and the Borg conflict seemed to occur shortly after the greater Dominion conflict.

I wouldn't mind it if they released novels and a comic book mini-series that's linked to Orci and Kurtzman's 2387+ setting via Star Trek Countdown and the upcoming MMO. I'd like to see more adventures featuring Captain Data and his crew; plus, based on the unnamed crewmen sketches, perhaps they could make some of those Asiatic and African-American characters descendants of Peter Kirk, Demora Sulu, Uhura, etc.

#49: Promethea (cool name, btw), I agree with you.

I've enjoyed "Star Trek" in print far longer than I'd care to admit (I still have all the James Blish novelizations when they were new, and long before the new non-canon stories became fashionable), and I will continue doing so.

My original point, however, still stands. I do not want to see "Star Trek" novels to turn into a 'war of the month club.' TREK has always espouced loftier themes, and it should continue doing so.

Gosh, what a lot of whiners. Isn't there anyone here who enjoys the current books? I do and this chapter was a good read, I am looking forward to the book. I think it's a nice choice to have Picard return to his family vineyard, full circle, after finally breaking free of the Borg nightmare - makes sense he would go back to where he recovered in 'Family'. And the depiction of a very shaken, insecure Seven was interesting too, as was hearing more about Geordi's background (he is much overdue a good story). I've just been learning about the pirates in Somalia and the grim situation there so it was actually touching to see the mention of Mogadishu restored and thriving in the future. That sense of hope and optimism is typical Star Trek.
Thanks for the extract and the reviews on this site which are very useful!

#36 said: "I agree with the anti-war sentiment that’s forming in this thread. I’ve never enjoyed any of the Star Trek books with “the galaxy hangs in the balance” plots."

#36: Pocket just published my TOS book which is a stand-alone story not about saving the galaxy, but about a moral dilemma. "Troublesome Minds" :) So they still have those smaller-crisis books.

42: Erroneous. The Crucible trilogy was published in paperback three years ago, and the hardback omnibus was cancelled well before Ellison's recent lawsuit was filed. The editors have been very clear: The omnibus was cancelled because of lack of time and money, no other reasons.
