ST09 Tidbits: Orci On Shatner Scene + Kirk Babies + Star Trek Inspires Star Wars Reboot? + more June 9, 2009

by Anthony Pascale , Filed under: Great Links, Star Trek (2009 film) , trackback

Star Trek has passed the one old month mark, but it still makes news. Today we have a collection of tidbits from video of Bob Orci talking Shatner (and wearing a funny hat), some details on the baby Kirk, Star Trek inspiring people to think of a Star Wars reboot, and more, including the latest box office numbers.

Bob Orci talks Shatner scene, reviews ‘Star Trek’, wears cowboy hat
The ShatnerVision folks are still putting out videos from the Charity Horse Show dinner which was attended by JJ Abrams, Chris Pine and many of the Trek team. Now they have a video interview with Star Trek co-writer Roberto Orci where he talks about the scene they wrote for Shatner and more. He also is wearing the one of the cowboy hats they gave out at the event:

Kirk’s birth doctor talks ‘baby wranglers’
In a new interview with HotterInHollywood, Sonita Henry (the Kelvin Doctor), talks about what it .

HIH: Sonita, you have a pretty vital role in the film. As a Starfleet doctor, you basically bring our main man (James T. Kirk) into the world. Were there any baby wranglers involved? How was shooting that chaotic delivery scene?

SH: I think three mothers turned up that morning with three different babies, and then we had to choose one. But I believe there were two fake babies and then one real baby. I don’t really hang out with kids, I’m not around babies, so I kept thinking I was going to drop someone’s [child]. And these babies are ten days old! Brand new babies. Time to not drop a child. It wasn’t chaotic. It was extremely quiet on set. And the problem was that the scene itself had to be very chaotic, so it was a very interesting dynamic, keeping your energy at that level but, at the same time, on a set where you could drop a pin and hear it.

Don’t drop the Kirk!

Reboot Star Wars ala Star Trek
We have pointed to a number of articles about taking lessons from the new Star Trek move, but now io9 has one saying that the Star Wars franchise can learn a thing or two from JJ Abrams (which is ironic after the comparisons of the new Star Trek to Star Wars). In their article ‘How To Reboot Star Wars‘, Here are some lessons from Trek:

3) Get back to the characters we care about. It sounds basic, but that’s how J.J. Abrams revitalized Star Trek. Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader. The classic characters.

4) Admit that Han Solo is the hero as much as Luke. That’s the other thing J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek did right: It treated Spock as the hero, just as much as Kirk. We all knew, all along, that Spock belonged in the top spot alongside Kirk, but the series had never quite admitted it before. (Probably due to Shatner’s ego, among other things.) Han Solo deserves a similar elevation. Like Kirk and Spock, Han and Luke are the yin and yang, except that they go in opposite directions. ….

Rebooting Star Wars? Don’t forget the lens flare

ST09 comic stip wraps up
In a previous tidbits we pointed to a new series of web comic strips about the new Star Trek movie at MotionPictureComics.com. The folks at that site just sent in an email to let us know they have wrapped up their strip with a total of 17 entries.

Box Office Update: $336.3M Worldwide
Star Trek’s fifth Monday was the first day it made less than $1M, with a domestic gross of $926K, coming in a very close sixth place behind Terminator 4 ($934K). But Star Trek’s drop from last week was only 27%, which isn’t shabby. Trek’s total domestic sales are now$223.6M. Star Trek also brought in $679K in overseas sales for a total foreign take of $112.6M. The total global gross is now $336.3M.

Yikes! I don’t see cowboy hats ever fitting in as uniform items on the bridge (grin).

2. Ensign Ricky - June 9, 2009

Hey far out.

3. Ensign Ricky - June 9, 2009

Didn’t Kirk’s shirt in Trek V say “Go climb a glacier”?

4. Brian J. Young - June 9, 2009

Question for Mr. Orci (I don’t think this was asked in the previous Q&A articles): Why was Nero wading through water when he was interrogating Captain Pike, and later Kirk was wading in water when he rescued Pike? Was this related to the cut scenes with the Klingons? Thanks!

5. Steven - June 9, 2009

Star Wars reboot? Uh-oh. Roberto Orci looks awesome in the cowboy hat btw

6. THX-1138 - June 9, 2009

i have said that they should do something with the characters we first enjoyed watching as kids from Star Wars before they did the prequels. But I would rather see Episode VII than a reboot of Star Wars. A New Hope? Really? Can’t we just let it be?

7. The Governator - June 9, 2009

Wow that comic strip made me laugh. Obviously they were incapable of doing anything for 25 years, but funny nonetheless.

8. Jamziz - June 9, 2009

Orci sounds drunk in this interview

9. Marvin the Martian - June 9, 2009

I’m eagerly waiting for reboots of Citizen Kane, The Godfather and The French Connection, in which each movie is shot in a studio where all the greenscreen backgrounds are replaced with CGI.

Make sure they all are rated PG-13, too.

I think that would be AWESOME.

10. WinnipegFan - June 9, 2009

Can someone transcribe what he said about the Shatner scene please?

Thanks!

11. Chris Dawson - June 9, 2009

ST 5 was “Go Climb a Mountain”

12. Harry Ballz - June 9, 2009

#3 No, it said “Go climb a rock” (I think)

13. SebiMeyer - June 9, 2009

Wait, Shatner wasn’t in the movie? How come it was so good then… does not computer…

14. Izbot - June 9, 2009

Mr Orci: Seriously. Lose the hat.

15. Izbot - June 9, 2009

It was “Go climb a rock”, people.

16. SpocksinnerConflict - June 9, 2009

10-

at the end, when Spock Prime confronts young Spock, he gives his younger self a holo-message that Kirk Prime gave to him as a sort of “ill always remember you old friend” message, sometime right before Kirk dies.

It seems in that old draft of the script, Spock Prime had a more difficult time convincing young Spock how important the Kirk and Spock relationships was so young Spock listened, and watched i guess, this Shatner message to Spock Prime. The Shatner voice-over would then play over young Kirk receiving his commendation

17. The Last Maquis - June 9, 2009

there we have it Straight from the Horses mouth, “Next Gen” fan, plus TOS “Movie” fan Only!!!

Nobody on the Staff watched TOS or wanted to, and that’s why the Movie Sucked.

it’s like if they did their own version of a New Next Gen movie but based the characters on their appearances on DS9 or Voyager.

18. Sloan47 - June 9, 2009

#17, I’m a TOS fan AND a TNG fan and I thought the film was fantastic. This just proves you can’t please everyone all the time.

19. Capt Mike of the Terran Empire - June 9, 2009

I know that Trek 5 was not the best but come on people. Idid say Go climb a rock. A Star Wars reboot. No. But how about a chapter 7. 8. 9. lets go past return of the jedi. Ocan write along with J.J Abrams. But of corse lucas can be there to. Oh Orci. How many drinks did you have.

20. Sloan47 - June 9, 2009

If Star Wars had to do anything, I’d enjoy a movie based on the “Knights of the Old Republic” series of games. I’m not even a Star Wars fan and I enjoyed that story.

21. richpit - June 9, 2009

Ouch. I just read all those ST XI comics @ “motionpicturecomics.com”. Bad. Really, really bad. The art was OK, but none of them were even remotely funny.

IMO.

22. Annoying Doorchime - June 9, 2009

@17

So, when did Trolls joined the Maquis?

Oh and Bob, I’ll wear everything when i’m writing. but one should never… ever… wear that hat ;-)

23. The Last Maquis - June 9, 2009

#7. The Governator (on Nero and Narada)

That was not made Obvious, it was swept under the carpet until the writers decided to use them again, what happened to them? I don’t know. what were they doing? I don’t know.

now I am aware that somehow in the deleted scenes this involves the Klingons, and yes the Prison “The wait is over” thing. Uhura does mention the Klingons getting wiped out by them, but without actually seeing what happened to them in the real cut of the movie, it seems like they just sat around for 25 years doing nothing. 47 Klingon ships can’t hurt ‘em, a Starfleet armada can’t hurt ‘em. Oh but an obsolete science vessel crashes into them and they’re fu%&ed!! I’ve only seen this movie once, someone explain what they were doing. Oh and The Comic isn’t canon.

24. Capt Mike of the Terran Empire - June 9, 2009

#17. I am a fan of all things Trek. From Tos to Enterprise and all the Movies.I even have seen all of James Cawleys work on Phase 2 fan show. Even the not so good Movies. . I loved the latest Movie and it was the best of all of them. Even better then Trek 2 which i did not think possible. To me it’s not all about techno babble or fx but about stories and the Hart. Theres some pretty great episodes of Voyager and Enterprise and Ds9. Some bad ones but a lot of good ones. The lattest Trek Movie i thought had a great story and thats why it has done mega Millions. Story!!!!!

25. The Last Maquis - June 9, 2009

#18. Sloan47

okay, true.

#19. Capt Mike of the Terran Empire

I liked ST5 a little…..

26. RD - June 9, 2009

So is Orci saying?:

Luke = Kirk
Han = Spock
Leia = Uhura
Ben = Spock Prime
Chewie = Sulu
R2D2 = Chekov
C3P0 = McCoy
Lando = Scotty
Yoda = Pike
Vader = Nero

27. The Last Maquis - June 9, 2009

#22. Annoying Doorchime

Yeah we’re what? 25, 26 comments in….yeah. Sure

28. Captain Dunsel - June 9, 2009

From the Sonita Henry interview:

“I kept thinking I was going to drop someone’s [child]. ”

I wonder what she REALLY said, that they felt they had to plug in the word “child”?

29. Capt Mike of the Terran Empire - June 9, 2009

Trek 5 Was for me started out good. But the end plot was just pathetic. I kep thinking that maybe the Klingons would attack or have a second warbird decloak and fire. But the way it ended just left me hangon on Air. But trek 6 was fantastic. Trek 09 was a hell of a Ride!!!!!! But that was a beautifull baby they had that protrayed baby kirk. I ca imagine that little baby in 18 years or so will be able to say he played James T Kirk and his frends will be very Envious.

30. CashCrowe - June 9, 2009

The Star Wars prequels and “special editions” were already reboots of a sort.

31. Devon - June 9, 2009

Mr. Orci… a while back you had stated on here in the comments section that you would like to discuss “Three philosophical cores” that were in the film. Will that time be soon?

Thanks!

32. Greg2600 - June 9, 2009

That Shatner scene would have stunk, glad they didn’t do it. Frankly, the only reason to have Shatner would have been live, in the flesh, playing alongside Nimoy. That is how they were meant to be, and their infrequent appearances over the last 20 years alone have never felt right.

33. Capt Mike of the Terran Empire - June 9, 2009

No more Star Wars prequals or reboots. Lets get Chapters 7. 8. 9.

34. WinnipegFan - June 9, 2009

The Shatner cameo would have been fantastic, fitting, emotional and a great “farewell” to the role. It’s that last reason that part of me is glad he declined.

I know the sequel will be great without Shatner, but I’m one of those that really, truly want to see Shatner as James Kirk one more time on the big screen. He’s not getting any younger…

35. Capt Mike of the Terran Empire - June 9, 2009

As much as i would love to see the shat on screen i say no. he had is time on screen in Generations and had a good send off for Kirk. Let Pine be Kirk from now on. As far as Nimoy i do want him in Trek one more time to give the Franchise a big send off to explore strange new worlds. But let the new cast have Trek all to them selves and let them take trek for the next 10 to 20 years.

36. MakinBacon - June 9, 2009

I can’t imagine a Star Wars reboot working. Star Wars is still pretty mainstream (look at book, game and toy sales, as well as The Clone Wars). I personally think that the reboot thing only works for franchises that have been forgotten by everyone but the hardcore fans.

37. Driver - June 9, 2009

Where’s the news on the live action Star Wars TV series. Not at starwarsdotcom-yet. Looking forward to that.

38. Mr. "There are always possibilities" - June 9, 2009

It will be interesting to see if anyone from the original series will make it into the next movie. I personally think that it would be great to sneak Nichelle Nichols in somehow. I always felt like Uhura’s story was waiting to be told, and the folks behind this movie made me feel like I wasn;t the only one. Loved the “new” Uhura, although, as a fan, always thought she could do those things we didn;t see until the new movie.

As to Star Wars, #33, I agree! What happened after the fall of the Empire? Was Lea made President? Was there a counter-revolution? Were the Jedi re-established? Bring in a 50+ year old Luke Skywalker played by Mark Hammil dealing with his children. I want to know what happened to Lando and Han and Chewie.

No more prequels – don;t reboot Star Wars. ST had the benefit of taking off from where TOS left off and going forward. With SW, they should have done the same.

Live long and prosper, and boldly go!

39. Rick - June 9, 2009

Off Topic:

I voted No Mudd in the poll.
Like I said in another post, everyone can watch Mudd, Tralene, Gary Seven, Charlie(x) and …. many more on dvds. I’d like to see something totally new in the next movie. And please don’t put Khan in the sequel. Mr Orci don’t listen to the haters , it’s a nice hat ;)

40. Jeffery Wright - June 9, 2009

that comic strip sums it all up nicely…

how does everyone feel that now the series “enterprise” is left intact and all the rest of trek is now non existent?

the crew of the 1701-d might not ever even be born, due to the massive altering of the timeline.

small rifts, tend to mend themselves, but the destruction of an entire, pivotal race?

changes everything, affects earth history from that event on, in an undeniable way.

but hey, at least it was a kick ass movie.

41. dave - June 9, 2009

Word of advice to Orci. That hat does NOT suit you buddy.

42. Capt Mike of the Terran Empire - June 9, 2009

#38 you are right. What did happen to Haun and Leia and Luke. Did leia learn to use the Force like her brother and father and did they have children. I know that in some of the books they had twins but if they did did they have powers and were there any other jedi out there that simply hid.
trek had the Advantage of not just a reboot but a continuation of sorts. So on Treks side it is simply continuing.

43. Capt Mike of the Terran Empire - June 9, 2009

Bob Orci. A great Writer you are. You are Talented and Smart. But the Hat has got to go.. Sorry buddy. Just my Blue Collor Opinion.

44. NoRez - June 9, 2009

I wouldn’t mind a Star Wars ‘reboot’ or additional prequel if it focused on other aspects of the SW universe. Like, uh… smugglers.

Seriously, a film featuring Solo’s backstory (the academy, saving Chewie, winning the Falcon from Lando, etc) could be a LOT of fun. And a lot of action.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that were it to happen we shouldn’t hold our breath on a Ford cameo.

45. Anthony Thompson - June 9, 2009

A Star Wars reboot? I always thought it needed more lens flares!

46. Cervantes - June 9, 2009

Ideally, I’d have liked the new Trek ‘reboot’ to have somehow cleverly included some kind of POST-’Generations’ onscreen pairing of ‘PRIME’ Kirk alongside ‘PRIME’ Spock….. Alas, in the end there turned out to be quite a few reasons why the movie wasn’t designed with this potential TOS fan-pleaser in mind, it seems….

Seeing a deceased ‘PRIME’ Kirk in some kind of brief ‘holo’-message would have been a miserable appearance for William Shatner in this thing, as far as I’m concerned….so I’m glad it didn’t pan out that way. It would have just reminded me of the fact that ‘Generations’ (with Bill’s co-operation of course, unfortunately!) got rid of his iconic character in the first place!

47. Valenti - June 9, 2009

If anything, the hat should’ve been black. =P

It’s a shame to see the MPC Star Trek comics end. I really liked them.

48. Penhall99 - June 9, 2009

“We all knew, all along, that Spock belonged in the top spot alongside Kirk, but the series had never quite admitted it before. (Probably due to Shatner’s ego, among other things.)”

Ummmm……Nimoy and Shatner have ALWAYS been known to be the stars. Every single episode and movie (except Part III that Nimoy directed) revolve around both those characters.

So yeah, the series “admitted that” many, many years ago.

The “Shatner’s ego” jab was completely off them mark and unneccesary.

49. spark - June 9, 2009

NO STAR WARS REBOOT……….please. The series is just fine the way it is, Jar Jar, ewoks and all

50. TrekMadeMeWonder - June 9, 2009

Starting to hate how Star Wars has been sideling-up to TREK for all these years now.

51. Cervantes - June 9, 2009

As far as any potential ‘reboot’ of ‘STAR WARS’ in any way…that is an idea beyond appalling!

Although there is a lot about the Prequels and the associated ‘Expanded Universe’ product that I couldn’t care less about….the ORIGINAL trilogy is something which I hate to see recast and ‘reimagined’ where it’s design-ethic is concerned. I have no interest whatsoever in seeing a DIFFERENT-looking ‘Millennium Falcon’ etc., etc,. and hope that particular storyline is left well alone.

As previous posters have indicated, there are a wealth of potential storylines that could be shown using characters in that existing far, far, away galaxy (such as the upcoming live-action series) without a rehash of what we’ve already seen. If there HAS to be any further MOVIES, then I hope they will focus on ALL-NEW characters and storylines from that already marvellously-designed ‘Universe’, rather than ‘redoing’ everything…. The notion of Mark Hamill being included as a now AGED ‘Jedi master’ DOES appeal to me though, if some upstart ‘youngling’ cast is to be introduced!

I’d be happy to see more of this kind of thing for instance – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzQV5m0tMgA

As far as any ‘rebooting’ of the EXISTING ‘STAR WARS’ saga, this careful ‘enhancement’ of what’s already established, is all I’ll ever need -

(completed) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlYpNo2vRmw

(coming soon) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ie_3YlF9s2s

52. Pyork (JE) - June 9, 2009

Okay let’s not give Lucas any ideas about rebooting Star Wars. It’s been butchered enough. Instead let’s move on in the series. Bring in new characters and let them be mentored by the old ones. Bring in Kyle Katarn and all those people. Expand on Wedge Antillies. Don’t butcher the originals any more than they already have been.

53. Cervantes - June 9, 2009

(coming soon) should be – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ie_3YIF9s2s

54. Scott - June 9, 2009

I’m there will someday be a Star Wars reboot but probably not for decades. For all it’s flaws, those movies are sort of like Wizard Of Oz or Casablanca. You just can’t screw with those, really, because all in all they STILL stand up to today’s scrutinizing audiences and modern sensibilities. To me, even the original Star Wars still looks pretty damn great and not really dated at all, other than the occasional glimpse of a 70’s style sideburns. That’s where they went horribly wrong with Planet Of The Apes, because the original still works in 2009 as well as it did in 1968 or whenever it was released.

So, yeah, prequels were disappointing in some ways, and there were missed opportunities with the original trilogy, but you know, there’s a new live action Star Wars series coming, so hopefully that will quench the reboot thirst a little.

55. Spectre_7 - June 9, 2009

Took the words right out of my mouth….

They don’t need to reboot Star Wars, just pick up where the original characters left off and move on to eps 7, 8 & 9. Obviously get new younger actors that can do all the modern lightsaber fighting, and not bring back ol’ harrison ford.

56. Jon S. - June 9, 2009

I know how to pronounce Orci now. : D

57. VOODOO - June 9, 2009

I think that scene with Shatner would have worked quite well.

I have a feeling we may see Shatner + Nimoy in the sequel.

58. DonDonP1 - June 9, 2009

Cool, but with all respect, a “Star Wars” reboot may not be necessary. Quite frankly it may not matter with me whether or not a new S-Dub trilogy would happen–whether it’ll be made for movie houses or just the home entertainment mark, whether it’ll be distributed by the News Corporation-owned 20th Century Fox or the Time Warner-owned Warner Bros. Pictures. Neither does it matter to me on whether or not a 12th “Star Trek” motion picture would take place after either the 11th or 10th. Of course, I was once a Warsie and a Trekkie.

59. S. John Ross - June 9, 2009

#28:

Yeah, that’s what I’m wondering too … what the heck COULD anyone say that would justify that kind of editorial replacement? “Brat” maybe? “Spawn? Sprog?” :)

60. Iowagirl - June 9, 2009

#48
So true. Considering that Shatner’s ego spoiled EVERYTHING, completely and wilfully screwed up Spock’s role, and arranged for Spock to fade away from the public’s mind, it’s a real miracle that Kirk and Spock have become equally important, famous, and iconic and still are after 40+ years. I wonder how on earth that could happen at all…:))

61. clavinbot - June 9, 2009

George Lucas is not going to let anyone else do anything to Star Wars, and he’s certainly not going to let anyone remake it any capacity-he owns it entirely and he can make sure it never happens. And that is one move on his part I applaud-I don’t think any of these reboots are a good idea, any of them, the whole miserable decade, and this is one case where his being a Hollywood outsider will pay off for fans in the long run.

62. cagmar - June 10, 2009

There’s really nothing logically wrong with building the Enterprise on the ground… it just looked ridiculous. First of all, I’m sure the scaling was wrong. I mean, I don’t have the measurements, but mentally it doesn’t sit right when you see it.

If JJ Abrams fell in love with the old picture of the E being built at the docks, he should have tried to match that. The way they set up that shot was awkward and it has always looked wrong. They didn’t even try to fit the surroundings to the idea, as if there’s just some little patch in the middle of Iowa someplace where they set up to build a ship – with no connection industrially or logically to anything else. Just fields all around it. Odd. It was an okay idea executed dreadfully.

Maybe it would have been better if they threw in another lens flare?

63. Mach5 - June 10, 2009

Star Wars reboot? In cartoon form, perhaps… But live action? Hell no!

64. Jim Smith - June 10, 2009

Leaving aside the weird idea that a ‘Star Trek’ film which isn’t a re-boot should make anyone think of re-booting anything… Anyone who thinks Han Solo is the hero of ‘Star Wars’ isn’t paying attention. He’s in it less than Grand Moff Tarkin is. He doesn’t appear until the 45th minute and then walks out of the film in minute 137 (less than an hour later), popping up for 90 seconds at the end. The movies are also already full of ersatz ‘verite’ filming techniques. So it’s kind of hard to see where the person who wrote that ‘article’ is coming from.

65. DJT - June 10, 2009

In regards to the new ships size and dimensions, I am reminded of something I saw on Conan once.

“No no, I’m sorry, I’m very sorry, the correct answer is ‘Who gives a s**t?’ ”

-Triumph The Insult Comic Dog

66. JPSaylor - June 10, 2009

ROFL OMG I almost died after reading that comic strip!!!!!

67. John Shorey - June 10, 2009

There is no need tore-make the original Star Wars films.

On the other hand they should rip up every copy of the prequel trilogy and start again.

68. Trek Nerd Central - June 10, 2009

28, 59.

Guys, relax. In all likelihood he just said, “I’m not around babies, so I kept thinking I was going to drop someone’s.” As in baby. The object “baby” is implied by the previous object “babies” in the first clause of the sentence.

Get it?

69. Brett Campbell - June 10, 2009

They couldn’t discuss a SW reboot without a “Shatner’s ego” slam?

Some people just go out of their way to be nasty.

70. Brett Campbell - June 10, 2009

60 – Iowagirl – Please tell me your Shatner’s ego comment is sarcasm!

71. Brett Campbell - June 10, 2009

48 – I didn’t see your post until after posting mine.

Thank you for also seeing the unnecessary rudeness of their comment and protesting it as well.

72. Someone - June 10, 2009

People who say that Kirk & Spock are like yin and yang apparently missed the entire original series. Spock and McCoy were like yin and yang, Kirk was the arbitrator. Something this new continuity gets wrong.

73. Mitch - June 10, 2009

Generations couldn’t have been a worse sendoff for Shatner. It would be really nice to see him return one more time, and with Nimoy already established in the time period, it would be an amazing change to get the two of them one final time on screen together in their iconic roles. That said, I don’t believe for one second we’ll get that.

74. Tobias Nicholls - June 10, 2009

Right my recasting of Star Wars…

Chris Evans as Luke Skywalker
Hugh Jackman as Han Solo
Scarlett Johansson as Princess Leia
Ian McKellan as Obi-Wan
Jamie Foxx as Lando Calrission
Simon Pegg as Greedo… :-)

75. Jeffrey V - June 10, 2009

Shatner’s Kirk is dead. His choice, He choose to be in Generations. Do you not think someone of Bill’s stature would have taken a more active approach in his character’s death scene if he thought it was weak. No offense but he did write the story and directed probably the weakest film in Trek History.

Star Wars…this is a Star Trek site. Quite acting like a bunch of plebes. Who gives a crap on who should be cast for films that should never get made.

76. Iowagirl - June 10, 2009

#70
Ah Brett, of course it was – never be in doubt about my Shatnercredo… :)

77. Closettrekker - June 10, 2009

#73—”…it would be an amazing change to get the two of them one final time on screen together in their iconic roles. That said, I don’t believe for one second we’ll get that.”

I certainly hope not. There is simply no reason for a pre-Generations ShatKirk to show up in this timeline.

Shatner appeared in 79 episodes of TOS, voiced 22 animated episodes, and appeared in 7 feature films—all as James T. Kirk. He was great in that role for a long time (even if it did stink a bit toward the end). And what better tribute to his contribution than to have the character he helped mold into a cultural icon live on in another actor—-bringing JTK to another generation?

78. Jeff - June 10, 2009

I doubt we will see any of TOS cast in the sequel. The new cast will stand fine on their own.

79. Trek Nerd Central - June 10, 2009

Oh, goody, are we all gonna start arguing about the likelihood of a Shatner cameo again? Well, in that case. . .

OF COURSE he’ll be in STXII — or maybe a later film. Come on! One of the beauties of the alternate reality is the way it totally knocks the events of Generations on its arse. Kirk no longer has to die in that stupid, ignominious way. He can live to a ripe old age and appear, well-preserved and prosperous-looking, in a sequel opposite Nimoy and/or Pine and/or Quinto. Why not?

80. Star Trackie - June 10, 2009

#77 ” And what better tribute to his contribution than to have the character he helped mold into a cultural icon live on in another actor—-bringing JTK to another generation?”

Indeed. And after seeing what Pine did with the character, after talking with JJ and familiarizing himself with Kirk by watching the first (and BEST ) season of Star Trek, the Shat is, no doubt, very flattered. And PIne has successfully delivered the charm, wit and bravado of Shatner’s Kirk to a new generation. But none of that changes the fact that an appearance by Shatner, as Kirk in a new movie, would be sweet icing on an already delicious cake. If anyone could make it work, serve the story and feel completely organic and natural, it would be Orci and company.

Will it happen? Who knows, probably not. But should it happen, I have every confidence that the writers will do it with great creativity and respect. And they will do it well.

What part of “reboot” do people not seem to grasp? No disrespect to the reason I am a trekkie but no more of the old cast. Leonard Nimoy did a great “passing of the torch” in this film. His scenes with Chris Pine and later the scene with Zachary Quinto wishing him “Good Luck” was more than sufficient.

Star trek needs to establish a new formula and let this new crew stand on their own. If we want more Trek in the future we need to embrace this new universe JJ Abrams has created. Bill needs to let go, Gene has been gone for 18 years and Star trek survived. I think if it can stand the death of IT”S creator. It can stand without Bill Shatner as Kirk.

Rebooting Star Wars is, bar none, the worst idea anyone has ever come up with.

Boy, there sure are alot of posts criticising Orci for wearing one of the hats given out by Shatner’s people at the charity horse dinner.

Personally, I’m glad that he wasn’t too insecure or vain to preclude him from getting into the spirit of things. I’m not sure why he’s being given a hard time for that…of all things.

Nobody’s rebooting anything Star Wars unless the master of that toy production factory, George Lucas, says so.

He’s the one who screwed it up the first time. What makes anyone think he’ll do better the next time around or that he even wants to try?

There are always more toys to be squeezed out of that franchise even without a reboot.

This is a WONDERFUL lesson for the suits in Hollywood to learn: more rehashing! And given what the prequels did to the Star Wars universe do you think a reboot would be an improvement? How about leaving well enough alone and coming up with some new ideas for a change (a reboot here and there is okay, BSG is a fine example), but rebooting every lame a** sitcom, action-adventure, sci fi movie and TV show is a recipe for box office tedium. Hopefully if Hollywood goes reboot crazy the audience will vote with their dollars and stay home.

Star Wars reboot? Hell no!

It worked great for Trek. This is Trek ona new scale. Star Wars created a scale, it was unique. It was fantastic and had two fantastic sequels, some questionable prequels, and countless pointless off shoots like the Ewoks adventures and Droids. That’s like replacing the Statue of Liberty.

90. dmduncan - June 11, 2009

Is it just me, or is Orci actually starting to resemble a young Gene Roddenberry?

91. sans_shatner_1701 - June 11, 2009

Star Wars reboot – are you kidding? Re-boot to what? People are re-boot crazy in hollywood – take a chill pill down there.

Besides, I’m sure Lucas has no intention of that – he owns it lock stock and barrel. Aint gonna happen.

92. thebiggfrogg - June 12, 2009

Shatner as Yoda! Backwards syntax and melodramatic pauses together!

93. tlh1138 - June 15, 2009

No Star Wars reboot, it’s not necessary. However, if you would like to watch a fan edit of A New Hope that fixes just about everything wrong with it, try to find a copy of “Star Wars: Episode IV Revisited” by Adywan.

As many others have written, this is the only version of Episode IV I will watch from now on, unless Lucasfilm comes out with a version better, which I highly doubt. You can read more about it here:

And yes, Han shoots first!
