A few interesting tidbits i've learned:

Roddenberry originally intended The Enterprise to land on each planet visited. But budget constraints for effects wouldn't allow it. So his ingenious solution was the transporter!!

When production design for the aborted Phase II series/ TMP were in the early stages, landing pads/struts were part of the refit of the Enterprise.

For more information, read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_The_Motion_Picture It's a long read, but well worth it.

It seems reasonable that if technology has advanced enough to allow warp drive, that getting a ship off the ground and into space has been mastered and is pretty routine.

Anyone wonder why the Enterprise was constructed on the surface and not in an orbital shipyard? After she was completed, exactly how were they going to put her in orbit?

(A) Ah, well. So much for Ewok-level toy sales for this "iconic location." :)
(B) You have a DVD already? Or you just took a stopwatch into the theater to respond to my post???

At 23.10 in to the movie, in the bar, Pike says to Kirk, " Riverside Shipyards...shuttle for new recruit is leaving at 0800..."

The shipyard got the same treatment as the space station, only a fleeting glimpse. Both could have been seen a little more impressively than they did, without a flyaround like in TMP.

Once again for the billionth time: Ships can be built in one place, let's say for example gosh where can we say? A shipyard? Then they are registered to sail out of a particular port which could be anywhere. Titanic, Belfast, Liverpool; Enterprise, Riverside, San Fransisco.

As for John Eaves work, fantastic as usual. I've been following his blogs along with Doug Drexlers and Alex Jaegers stuff for a long while now, they're always very informative and a great read usually interspersed with some good behind the scenes trivia. Check it out if you get a chance, it's well worth it.

Here's a post from Mr. Eaves after he posted the sketches up (hope he won't mind me pasting it here for those who haven't visited his fantastic blog!)

Well after yesterdays post’s, the visits and comments were way to many for my little mind to take in,,Over 12,000 viewers came by WHOLLY COW!!!!! what was happening yesterday???? As PEE WEE would say,,,,the Moon’s in line with Pluto, HAAA! or else everybody was off work and had nothing better to do than inter-netting all day. WOW!!! Anyways thanks so much for all the visits and comments,, some very long ones that I’ll try to get to over the weekend. Thanks to the regulars and friends that are always stopping by to say hi and thanks to all the new folks too!!! I sure am glad this old stuff is enjoyed so much and it seems to be getting some folks jobs and connecting a lot of talent and new friends together,,,What more could you want than that… OK a big heartfelt thanks to everyone who is coming by and taking time out of your busy days to say Howdy.

The Enterprise being built on Earth isn't a problem. Being in Earth's atmosphere also isn't a problem, the TOS Enterprise was flying around Earth's atmosphere being chased by a jetfighter (a airforce starfighter no less) in "Tomorrow is Yesterday".
Also, Voyager was able to land and take off from a planet's surface. I think in one of the episodes it was said they used the warp field to cancel gravity to allow the ship to land.
If Mr. Abrams and company would have just taken 30 seconds and have someone explain this onscreen, maybe at the academy to the cadets, most of the people in the posts above would be happy.
