Hatch sees Star Trek as model for BSG Movie
The success of the new Star Trek movie seems to becoming a kind of case study. Now Richard Hatch, the original Apollo in TOS Battlestar Galactica and Tom Zarek in Ron Moore’s BSG, thinks Universal should learn a thing or two from Paramount. We reported some time ago that there is a Battlestar movie in development at Universal, but that it is not related to the Ron Moore TV series. Hatch tells MovieHole he isn’t sure that Universal know what they are doing, saying "unlike Paramount, who seems to know the Star trek audience, I don’t think Universal ever quite got Battlestar." Hatch is specifically concerned about the setting for the film again comparing to Star Trek:

[With Star Trek it] was still the characters we love, but they went back twenty…thirty… years to when they were just kids. But with Battlestar, they’re just going to go back to the same timeframe we saw in the series’ and recast those roles. I don’t think Star Trek would’ve been successful if they had recast the Star Trek characters at the same age as they were in the previous films. By going back, it gave that film a window so fans could expect a change of cast.

great article ! first ?

I’d like to hear some orchestras do the music from the original show. I’d go hear that.

I agree with Hatch…do it right

nice image looks the same

Glad to see Star Trek wiping the floor with all other releases, shame about T4 – I really enjoyed it !!

Lol, Richard Hatch still banging on about is BSG movie after all these years ! Kinda reminds me of Levar Burton and his one more TNG movie ! Move on guys !

If only men could procreate…that is one good looking dude!

Reading the box office list quickly makes #9 look like:

My Life in Ruins: X-men Origins

Which is what the producers of that lame movie must be thinking now. They got dusted…

The perfect result of the ultimate warped bromance! ;)

I live in H-Town, so I will definitely be attending the Trek concert.

That picture of Pinto is FREAKY but cool.

The BSG movie MUST be the Origin Story of the first Cylon War and how it all lead to the TV Series, it makes PERFECT SENSE to me!!!

The musical score for the new movie is terrible.

@11:

no

I beg to differ Ran.

I thought that it was well done.

11

In your solitary opinion.

Hey Ran,

Your a moron. The music to the new movie is fantastic. You must not have a pulse.

I’m kinda good on BSG- the series was about all you could ask from that mythology. Would rather see more original SciFi. Sorry Richard…

@15

Once again you prove to the world that some Trekkies just can’t allow for difference of opinion without having to stoop to personal insults.

I’ve see both T4 and Wolverine, both were alright. You’d think reading the comments here and elsewhere on the web that those movies were the worst pieces of crap ever, instead I found both were normal everyday fare that you could get lost in for a few hours and just exit not feeling too high or low. Star Trek OTOH everyone leaves the theater pumped, excited, jabbering away about the movie. That I think was the key difference there.

@11: Says the esteemed musical scholar… err, who are you again?

I wish I was even remotely close to Houston; I’d have tickets to that show in an Klingon minute.

I wanna see a Pine/Shatner merge.

Sorry Ran, I strongly disagree.

It is actually really good, IMHO, though it is very different to most of the Star Trek scores of the past.

That’s because the new movie is different to all of the other Star Trek movies.

Hey, Anthony–could we have a poll re: the score for the new movie? Or did that already happen? IMHO, I thought it was very well done.

#11 –  If you haven’t heard it yet, check out the Film Score Monthly podcast on iTunes. Trekmovie’s own Jeff Bond is on the panel and they review not only the new film score objectively, but the rest of the Trek music from TOS through the movies as well.

When I saw the article icon I’m like, is that Kirk or Spock / Pine or Quinto?

Star Trek score = Win.

Trolling = Fail.

QuintoPine = ZOMGNOWAI.

Zach and Chris would make a good lookin’ kid.

That pic is freaky

That new score just keeps growing on me. I just love that lead-out from the Kelvin to the main title….

Giacchino joins a pantheon of wonderful film and TV composers which Trek has always managed to snag.

Richard Hatch is right. If you are going to do a movie then do it right. Ron Moores Bsg was good. But if they do an orignal Bsg then get the right people and up date it but pay tribute to the orignal classic bsg. Don’t just throw something together and say hey heres the classic bsg. If Trek did that we all and i mean all would have bashed the film.

I Love the Music of Trek 2009. I have the Cd and it’s the best since Trek 6. I could never get boared with this Music. J.J get Michael back for the next Movie. Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like Mr. Giacchino’s score, but it’s not one of my favorites. Mr. Goldsmith’s ST:TMP score is a masterpiece and all the other Trek musical scores pale in comparison, including Star Trek XI’s. I was hoping for a score with more than one major theme to it, the way ST:TMP had the main theme, Ilia’s theme, and the Klingon Battle theme. Star Trek XI’s score is really just several variations of the same theme, and listening to the score on the CD, it tends to be very bland in the middle stretch. And Mr. Courage’s main TOS theme is very poorly forced into it at the end. After “The Incredibles” and the amazing “Cloverfield Overture (Roar!)” I expected more of Mr. Giacchino. I guess he was putting most of his creative emphasis on “Up” instead of “Star Trek” last year.

I can’t believe some folks hate the score. I love the score, and think it matches the tone of the movie and invokes emotion.

Also, I was traveling in the Midwest to visit family and friends last weekend. In Cincinnati/Newport KY area the IMAX there is running Star Trek during evening hours 9pm start times as opposed to the 12am showings in some places.

I also was able to view the movie with my family and they loved it. They couldn’t believe how good it was and like a lot of people, forgot how much they enjoyed TOS. More importantly the 13 and 14 year olds liked the new movie as well.

#15. “The music to the new movie is fantastic. You must not have a pulse.”

Here’s the truth. The music was awesome in the opening sequence, which was generally a spectacular and moving moment. BUT for the rest of the movie, the music was detached from the action and too self-conscious. Overall it was not fantastic. But at the beginning, it was as perfect as any music could have been.

I want to see William Shatner in the next movie!!!!

@23 – Thanks for the link, RD. That was a very interesting podcast. The reviews of Star Trek theme music (both for tv and films) was intelligent and objective.

For those of you with 21 minutes to dedicate to an educated discussion of music, I highly recommend it.

I do appreciate Richard Hatch and loved the original BSG…do it right!
I often listen to the soundtrack at work over youtube…the music can be moving at times…expecially Nero death experience ,Labor of love, and New car smell and chilling like Nero sighted ,Enterprising young men, and Nailin the Kelvin…this has become my favorite soundtrack over ST TMP and that stayed number 1 with me for 30 years!

Is that Captain Spork or Mr. Kock?

i just saw the hangover but the spock/kirk looks like justin bartha

The music is ,indeed, so moving. The music ,during the USS Kelvin shuttle-evacuation scene, made me think of “little chicks scurrying to safety”,while the USS Kelvin(“Mother Hen”),sacrificed itself,to ensure the escape-to-safety of all the shuttles.

JJ & Co know how to play the heart. They know what they’re doing. They know their sh-t.TRULY!

As per the new movies score- parts of it were well done. The music worked well in the movie. But as stand alone music, the music isn’t very complex or interesting like Star Trek 1 or 2 were. There were some rather dull sections of the music on the CD. But as I say again- the music works well in context of watching the film. As stand alone music, its not the best I’ve heard.

#40:
Good point!Sometimes that synthesis of ALL the components working together CANNOT be seperated.I don’t have the soundtrack yet, but it might suffer in its’ seperation from the movie.

That picture of Zacharis is freaky. lol

40. braxus … “the music works well in context of watching the film. As stand alone music, its not the best I’ve heard.”

And that is exactly the difference between a good soundtrack and a great one.

#37-
LMAO!

I have never laughed out loud at a message board post!

You know, fusing Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine like that, the fusion looks like Brandon Routh from Superman Returns

For all the complaints that Paramount has not been marketing well enough internationally, HERE’S THEIR BIG CHANCE:

Star Trek opens in India on June 12th. Why the hell hasn’t Paramount taken the show on the road to Mumbai? Why isn’t this international news?

INDIA Has over 1.1 Billion people. The US only has about 300 Million.

If Paramount marketed the hell out of Trek there, they could potentially make as much as in the US.

Capt. Robau is one of the most beloved characters to come out of Trek in a long time. The actor who plays him, Faran Tahir is the son of actors who are well known in India and Pakistan. He could theoretically open up the whole sub-continent for Trek – especially in a country that loves its movies.

This seems like a no brainer! But have we heard anything? Nope. And they had over a month to roll out the promotions for this film in India.

And they wonder why the foreign box-office is marginal. Sad.

YEAH!!!!!!!!!!

46. RD – June 10, 2009 –

Agreed!

The I think the people in India are very opened to Trek’s ideals and philosophy. There is a potential gold mine waiting there for Paramount.

I have mixed emotions about Mr. Giacchino’s score, and I haven’t heard (or at least paid attention to) his works for other films to compare. Overall, I liked his work for the film, but feel certain portions lack subtlety.

The themes used whenever Narada enters the scene lack any kind of subtlety. It is loud, bombastic and screams EVIL! Okay, got that out of my system.

Other than that, I feel the score is perfectly fine, but as pointed out in a number of earlier posts, Jerry Goldsmith’s works are far better, especially ST: TMP… which for the most part I still feel is the definitive “Star Trek” movie… at least one that exemplifies the ideals of its creator.

That said ST09 is one damn fine, exciting movie (for what it is). I only hope that all the best ideals of this film can incorporate more TREKian philosophies in the sequel.

How many bad movies will it take to ruin McG’s career so we don’t have to put up with his crap anymore??

Come ON people. From his first film to his last he hasn’t done anything that a 15 year old couldn’t do.

“INDIA Has over 1.1 Billion people. The US only has about 300 Million.

If Paramount marketed the hell out of Trek there, they could potentially make as much as in the US.”

Yeah, there is that problem of that huge portion of the 1.1 billion who live in their own filth. Call me crazy but I don’t see them either having access to a cinema, or really being in the mood to have JJ inflicted on them.
