Hatch sees Star Trek as model for BSG Movie
The success of the new Star Trek movie seems to becoming a kind of case study. Now Richard Hatch, the original Apollo in TOS Battlestar Galactica and Tom Zarek in Ron Moore’s BSG, thinks Universal should learn a thing or two from Paramount. We reported some time ago that there is a Battlestar movie in development at Universal, but that it is not related to the Ron Moore TV series. Hatch tells MovieHole he isn’t sure that Universal know what they are doing, saying "unlike Paramount, who seems to know the Star trek audience, I don’t think Universal ever quite got Battlestar." Hatch is specifically concerned about the setting for the film again comparing to Star Trek:

[With Star Trek it] was still the characters we love, but they went back twenty…thirty… years to when they were just kids. But with Battlestar, they’re just going to go back to the same timeframe we saw in the series’ and recast those roles. I don’t think Star Trek would’ve been successful if they had recast the Star Trek characters at the same age as they were in the previous films. By going back, it gave that film a window so fans could expect a change of cast.

Houston Symphony To Perform Music of Trek – Including New Movie
On Thursday July 9th the Houston Symphony will hold a "Music of Star Trek & More Sci-Fi" which will include music from the Star Trek TV series and movies, including music from Michael Giacchino’s score for the new Star Trek movie. Accompanying the music will be images from the Star Trek franchise projected on screens above the orchestra. Tickets start at $25 and can be purchased by calling (713) 224-7575 or by going to www.houstonsymphony.org. There is also a “Name That Tune” contest, and a “Sci-Fi TV Pilot Video Contest.”, details at ourtribune.com

great article ! first ?

2. Andy Patterson - June 10, 2009

I’d like to hear some orchestras do the music from the original show. I’d go hear that.

3. I toldYouSo - June 10, 2009

I agree with Hatch…do it right

4. mat - June 10, 2009

nice image looks the same

5. Star Trek: The Boring Next Generation - June 10, 2009

Glad to see Star Trek wiping the floor with all other releases, shame about T4 – I really enjoyed it !!

Lol, Richard Hatch still banging on about is BSG movie after all these years ! Kinda reminds me of Levar Burton and his one more TNG movie ! Move on guys !

6. PJ - June 10, 2009

If only men could procreate…that is one good looking dude!

7. Kurt - June 10, 2009

Reading the box office list quickly makes #9 look like:

My Life in Ruins: X-men Origins

Which is what the producers of that lame movie must be thinking now. They got dusted…

8. Noshbox - June 10, 2009

The perfect result of the ultimate warped bromance! ;)

9. Millennium Vulcan - June 10, 2009

I live in H-Town, so I will definitely be attending the Trek concert.

That picture of Pinto is FREAKY but cool.

10. Markus McLaughlin - June 10, 2009

The BSG movie MUST be the Origin Story of the first Cylon War and how it all lead to the TV Series, it makes PERFECT SENSE to me!!!

11. Ran - June 10, 2009

The musical score for the new movie is terrible.

12. Stephan - June 10, 2009

@11:

no

13. Gummy - June 10, 2009

I beg to differ Ran.

I thought that it was well done.

14. SChaos1701 - June 10, 2009

11

In your solitary opinion.

15. Capt Greedo. - June 10, 2009

Hey Ran,

Your a moron. The music to the new movie is fantastic. You must not have a pulse.

16. Stan Winsone - June 10, 2009

I’m kinda good on BSG- the series was about all you could ask from that mythology. Would rather see more original SciFi. Sorry Richard…

17. TerilynnS - June 10, 2009

@15

Once again you prove to the world that some Trekkies just can’t allow for difference of opinion without having to stoop to personal insults.

18. Valar1 - June 10, 2009

I’ve see both T4 and Wolverine, both were alright. You’d think reading the comments here and elsewhere on the web that those movies were the worst pieces of crap ever, instead I found both were normal everyday fare that you could get lost in for a few hours and just exit not feeling too high or low. Star Trek OTOH everyone leaves the theater pumped, excited, jabbering away about the movie. That I think was the key difference there.

19. CarlG - June 10, 2009

@11: Says the esteemed musical scholar… err, who are you again?

I wish I was even remotely close to Houston; I’d have tickets to that show in an Klingon minute.

20. Blair - June 10, 2009

I wanna see a Pine/Shatner merge.

21. OneBuckFilms - June 10, 2009

Sorry Ran, I strongly disagree.

It is actually really good, IMHO, though it is very different to most of the Star Trek scores of the past.

That’s because the new movie is different to all of the other Star Trek movies.

22. ster julie - June 10, 2009

Hey, Anthony–could we have a poll re: the score for the new movie? Or did that already happen? IMHO, I thought it was very well done.

23. RD - June 10, 2009

#11 –  If you haven’t heard it yet, check out the Film Score Monthly podcast on iTunes. Trekmovie’s own Jeff Bond is on the panel and they review not only the new film score objectively, but the rest of the Trek music from TOS through the movies as well.

Warning for trolling. No need to get personal.

25. Chris - June 10, 2009

When I saw the article icon I’m like, is that Kirk or Spock / Pine or Quinto?

26. Kilo-Three-Zero - June 10, 2009

Star Trek score = Win.

Trolling = Fail.

QuintoPine = ZOMGNOWAI.

Zach and Chris would make a good lookin’ kid.

27. zak0318 - June 10, 2009

That pic is freaky

28. AJ - June 10, 2009

That new score just keeps growing on me. I just love that lead-out from the Kelvin to the main title….

Giacchino joins a pantheon of wonderful film and TV composers which Trek has always managed to snag.

29. Capt Mike of the Terran Empire - June 10, 2009

Richard Hatch is right. If you are going to do a movie then do it right. Ron Moores Bsg was good. But if they do an orignal Bsg then get the right people and up date it but pay tribute to the orignal classic bsg. Don’t just throw something together and say hey heres the classic bsg. If Trek did that we all and i mean all would have bashed the film.

30. Capt Mike of the Terran Empire - June 10, 2009

I Love the Music of Trek 2009. I have the Cd and it’s the best since Trek 6. I could never get boared with this Music. J.J get Michael back for the next Movie. Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!

31. Thorny - June 10, 2009

I like Mr. Giacchino’s score, but it’s not one of my favorites. Mr. Goldsmith’s ST:TMP score is a masterpiece and all the other Trek musical scores pale in comparison, including Star Trek XI’s. I was hoping for a score with more than one major theme to it, the way ST:TMP had the main theme, Ilia’s theme, and the Klingon Battle theme. Star Trek XI’s score is really just several variations of the same theme, and listening to the score on the CD, it tends to be very bland in the middle stretch. And Mr. Courage’s main TOS theme is very poorly forced into it at the end. After “The Incredibles” and the amazing “Cloverfield Overture (Roar!)” I expected more of Mr. Giacchino. I guess he was putting most of his creative emphasis on “Up” instead of “Star Trek” last year.

32. Phasers On Stun - June 10, 2009

I can’t believe some folks hate the score. I love the score, and think it matches the tone of the movie and invokes emotion.

Also, I was traveling in the Midwest to visit family and friends last weekend. In Cincinnati/Newport KY area the IMAX there is running Star Trek during evening hours 9pm start times as opposed to the 12am showings in some places.

I also was able to view the movie with my family and they loved it. They couldn’t believe how good it was and like a lot of people, forgot how much they enjoyed TOS. More importantly the 13 and 14 year olds liked the new movie as well.

33. cagmar - June 10, 2009

#15. “The music to the new movie is fantastic. You must not have a pulse.”

Here’s the truth. The music was awesome in the opening sequence, which was generally a spectacular and moving moment. BUT for the rest of the movie, the music was detached from the action and too self-conscious. Overall it was not fantastic. But at the beginning, it was as perfect as any music could have been.

34. Christopher Seeley - June 10, 2009

I want to see William Shatner in the next movie!!!!

35. Mike in Iowa - June 10, 2009

@23 – Thanks for the link, RD. That was a very interesting podcast. The reviews of Star Trek theme music (both for tv and films) was intelligent and objective.

For those of you with 21 minutes to dedicate to an educated discussion of music, I highly recommend it.

36. Captain Krunch - June 10, 2009

I do appreciate Richard Hatch and loved the original BSG…do it right!
I often listen to the soundtrack at work over youtube…the music can be moving at times…expecially Nero death experience ,Labor of love, and New car smell and chilling like Nero sighted ,Enterprising young men, and Nailin the Kelvin…this has become my favorite soundtrack over ST TMP and that stayed number 1 with me for 30 years!

37. Brett Campbell - June 10, 2009

Is that Captain Spork or Mr. Kock?

38. adam - June 10, 2009

i just saw the hangover but the spock/kirk looks like justin bartha

39. fansince66 - June 10, 2009

The music is ,indeed, so moving. The music ,during the USS Kelvin shuttle-evacuation scene, made me think of “little chicks scurrying to safety”,while the USS Kelvin(”Mother Hen”),sacrificed itself,to ensure the escape-to-safety of all the shuttles.

JJ & Co know how to play the heart. They know what they’re doing. They know their sh-t.TRULY!

40. braxus - June 10, 2009

As per the new movies score- parts of it were well done. The music worked well in the movie. But as stand alone music, the music isn’t very complex or interesting like Star Trek 1 or 2 were. There were some rather dull sections of the music on the CD. But as I say again- the music works well in context of watching the film. As stand alone music, its not the best I’ve heard.

41. fansince66 - June 10, 2009

#40:
Good point!Sometimes that synthesis of ALL the components working together CANNOT be seperated.I don’t have the soundtrack yet, but it might suffer in its’ seperation from the movie.

42. Brad - June 10, 2009

That picture of Zacharis is freaky. lol

43. Thorny - June 10, 2009

40. braxus … “the music works well in context of watching the film. As stand alone music, its not the best I’ve heard.”

And that is exactly the difference between a good soundtrack and a great one.

I have never laughed out loud at a message board post!

45. Robert H. - June 10, 2009

You know, fusing Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine like that, the fusion looks like Brandon Routh from Superman Returns

46. RD - June 10, 2009

For all the complaints that Paramount has not been marketing well enough internationally, HERE’S THEIR BIG CHANCE:

Star Trek opens in India on June 12th. Why the hell hasn’t Paramount taken the show on the road to Mumbai? Why isn’t this international news?

INDIA Has over 1.1 Billion people. The US only has about 300 Million.

If Paramount marketed the hell out of Trek there, they could potentially make as much as in the US.

Capt. Robau is one of the most beloved characters to come out of Trek in a long time. The actor who plays him, Faran Tahir is the son of actors who are well known in India and Pakistan. He could theoretically open up the whole sub-continent for Trek – especially in a country that loves its movies.

This seems like a no brainer! But have we heard anything? Nope. And they had over a month to roll out the promotions for this film in India.

And they wonder why the foreign box-office is marginal. Sad.

47. spark - June 10, 2009

20. Blair – June 10, 2009

YEAH!!!!!!!!!!

INDIA Has over 1.1 Billion people. The US only has about 300 Million.

Agreed!

The I think the people in India are very opened to Trek’s ideals and philosophy. There is a potential gold mine waiting there for Paramount.

49. MC1 Doug - June 10, 2009

I have mixed emotions about Mr. Giacchino’s score, and I haven’t heard (or at least paid attention to) his works for other films to compare. Overall, I liked his work for the film, but feel certain portions lack subtlety.

The themes used whenever Narada enters the scene lack any kind of subtlety. It is loud, bombastic and screams EVIL! Okay, got that out of my system.

Other than that, I feel the score is perfectly fine, but as pointed out in a number of earlier posts, Jerry Goldsmith’s works are far better, especially ST: TMP… which for the most part I still feel is the definitive “Star Trek” movie… at least one that exemplifies the ideals of its creator.

That said ST09 is one damn fine, exciting movie (for what it is). I only hope that all the best ideals of this film can incorporate more TREKian philosophies in the sequel.

50. Spock - June 10, 2009

How many bad movies will it take to ruin McG’s career so we don’t have to put up with his crap anymore??

Come ON people. From his first film to his last he hasn’t done anything that a 15 year old couldn’t do.

“INDIA Has over 1.1 Billion people. The US only has about 300 Million.

If Paramount marketed the hell out of Trek there, they could potentially make as much as in the US.”

Yeah, there is that problem of that huge portion of the 1.1 billion who live in their own filth. Call me crazy but I don’t see them either having access to a cinema, or really being in the mood to have JJ inflicted on them.

51. jocor - June 11, 2009

Kock — If Spock and Kirk had a baby — freaked me out.

I didn’t know who I was looking at and finally slowly sort of realized I was looking at both of them.

That was so eerie. It was creepy as hell.

Really well done though. Not like Conan O’Brien’s jerky If They Mated.

52. DannydeK - June 11, 2009

Very stupid they are gonna make this Battlestar Movie. The series were so great, no movie can come close to it. Not without the original cast anyways. This movie would be so bad it will be boycotted for sure. Did Universal lost their minds?

53. Dovile - June 11, 2009

re: ST score

I’ve just listened to the OST. It’s not bad, but nothing really special for someone who haven’t seen the movie at all. If you’ve seen the movie and liked it, then it will remind some of the great er ST movie’s moments; Enterprising Young Men and To Boldly Go/End Credits are especially great. Somehow this OST left me with the impression that for this movie Mr.G didn’t got the chance to reveal his full potential.

re: Kock

When I saw the icon for this article, I simply thought that it’s Quinto gone handsome … :D Silly me:)
Hey, an idea for the next ST movie – a transport accident creates a Mr. Captain Spirk. LOL

54. Holger - June 11, 2009

JJ’s Trek reboot and the BSG reboot are suiting company to each other.

55. thebiggfrogg - June 11, 2009

50. China has 1.3 billion people and many of them are poverty-stricken (whether that qualifies as living in your own filth) is another discussion. Even so they have a middle class equal to the population to the U.S.

I’m not sure about India but I think the numbers are probably also substantial as India has a growing economy and middle class. Also, unlike China, they are avid cinema-goers (Bollywood, anyone). Potentially Trek could make some money there, whether it would blow the lid off the U.S. is another matter.

As for the quality of J.J.’s work and inflicting that on India, that is another matter for debate.

56. Mitch - June 11, 2009

A BSG movie based on the original would only work with the original cast, since they already did a recast version. I don’t think the Moore version needs a movie, and if original BSG is done again, a continuation makes the most sense to me.

One thing the original beat the snot out of the new version in, was the music. That booming theme was awesome, and it was foolish of Moore to only use it in a few episodes, and toned down.

57. 'Trick - June 11, 2009

Thought the new ST score was just OK. The new theme grew on me a little the second time around (though I felt it a little “BOOM BOOM here I AM! I’M A THEME!”) but the rest was a little ho-hum.

I think for his first time scoring a ST film, he did well. I find it funny that a lot of people are ready to herald everything in this movie as “the best thing EVER!!!!!!!! (add more exclamation points).” Is that just excitement over ST being back? Do they really believe that? Is this an over-compensation band-wagon jumping kind of reaction–the inverse of the “THIS IS A DISASTER! KIRK WEARS SIZE 10 BOOTS, NOT SIZE 10.5!” type of reaction?

Probably a mix.

Like the flim, score is fine, but neither are the best ever, in my opinion.

-P

58. yomayo - June 11, 2009

The Pinto image is actually from ontd_startrek livejournal community. There are four more Pinto bros out there in the interwebs. lol.

59. The Original Spock's Brain - June 11, 2009

I am all over that Houston Symphony concert! Awesome. Now I have to find a date…..

60. Chris Walton - June 11, 2009

Interesting, another Battlestar reboot possibly in the works, although maybe Hatch is right and they will just recast which could be the death of the project without a light visual reboot – think how the Kelvin props were a revamp of the TOS phaser and communicator (even though they were then devolved to look like they were older).

Will be an interesting one to keep an eye on.

Nice to see Star Trek is still big in the US totals, would love to see a similar breakdown of International (especially the UK)

61. Brett Campbell - June 11, 2009

44 – Glad you got a chuckle. Have a good ‘un, now.

62. Ensign Ricky - June 11, 2009

Lets really mess with people and cast William Shatner as Adama in the new BSG movie.

63. Will - June 11, 2009

Quinto, Pine, Pine, Quinto, Tuvix?

64. Raphael Salgado - June 11, 2009

“…INDIA Has over 1.1 Billion people…”

And how many of them already watched a torrent of a cam version from their Help Desk workstations?

I succinctly recall the incredibly funny Indian comedian Russell Peters flat out accusing his Indian audience of downloading all his performances, to which they laugh with full admission of their guilt.

65. MC1 Doug - June 11, 2009

The Pinto/Quine pic?

Obviously the result of a transporter malfunction, no doubt.

68. Captain Otter - June 11, 2009

I’m not gay, but the Quinto/Pine mash up is a good lookin’ dude.

Just sayin’

As far as a new non-Moore BSG flick, it is too soon. Let the franchise sit a spell.

However, a Farscape movie could rock hard-core.

69. JohnSmallberries - June 11, 2009

A classic BSG continuation – with daggits, and socialators, and centons? And Cylon toasters who can’t shoot straight (almost as bad as the A-Team bad guys). What about the disco hairdos? And don’t forget that singular shot of the pilots hitting the “turbo” button on their joysticks. And it just won’t be the same without Lorne Greene and his Charlie Rich sideburns.

70. Q - June 11, 2009

Lord, Kirk and Spock would make gorgeous babies! So would Chris and Zach. Wow.

71. thebiggfrogg - June 11, 2009

64. THAT is a good point! That is exactly what happens in China: Internet movie downloads and pirated DVDs, so the cinemas are pretty lifeless. However, India does have a cinema culture. I suppose there is something about seeing a movie in a packed cinema that cannot be replicated by an Internet download or DVD (to which I must say I concur; I’ve been in China for four years and I miss the cinema experience; it can be done here, but it isn’t common and it is relatively expensive).

72. thebiggfrogg - June 11, 2009

56. Beg to differ, Bear McCreary (is that the spellings) nuanced and multi-cultural scores were light-years ahead of the bombastic, Williams-inspired stuff of the original BSG. IMHO, Moore used it just right, as a brief homage, but it didn’t fit his reimagined BSG at all.

Then again, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

73. Joseph Maguire - June 13, 2009

I’ve seen Star Trek 51 times!! New starship and old Spock back in the new film. Listen his talk during the film. I hope to reach 100 or more til last roll in the ciinema.
