The Collective: Review Of Bradford Star Trek Gold Watch June 10, 2009

by John Tenuto , Filed under: Merchandise, Review , trackback

Today TrekMovie’s Collective continues to look at the Star Trek products from the Bradford Group with a review of the24-carat gold-plated Bradford Exchange Star Trek Collector’s Watch. Is this a good idea for a Father’s Day Gift? Find out below.

The gift of time
In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, there is an unusual scene thanks to director Nicholas Meyer where Admiral James T. Kirk looks at his watch. In fact, the symbolism of TWOK has a constant theme of time from lines such as "Time is a luxury you don’t have Admiral!" to the Genesis detonation time being the main obstacle for the crew. While not Kirk’s 23rd century chronometer, fans could now own their own heirloom quality Star Trek watch from the Bradford Exchange.

Selling for $119 (or 4 installments of $29.75), the Star Trek watch is heirloom quality and handcrafted, made of stainless steel, with a bezel and band featuring 24K gold plating. It sports the classic Star Trek logo and the USS Enterprise NCC 1701, both in gold against the black design of the face of the watch. The watch also displays the number day it is in the current month. The back of the watch is engraved with the appropriate sentiment of "Live Long and Prosper." A full year warranty and quartz movement technology are other features. If you are required to visit the water planet of Argo on a starfleet mission, you could also be rest assured because the watch is water resistant to a depth of 99 feet (the watch will not, however, protect you from sur-snakes). As with all Bradford items, the watch includes a certificate of authenticity. A custom Bradford Exchange case is included for display or protection of the watch.

The Star Trek Collector’s Watch and case

The watch has some nice features which make it a good gift for Father’s Day or for graduations this summer, including classy styling and a strong C-clasp to keep the watch secured. I have worn the watch for a few weeks and have gotten some compliments on it. It works as both a casual and dress watch which means it could be work for play or work. It goes nicely with a suit as much as it does a polo shirt. What is great is that it allows you to bring Trek into your everyday interactions. It is a great way to display your Trekkie heart literally on your sleeve.

I really like mine. OMG… FIRST! lol

LLAP

2. John Gill - June 11, 2009

I have bought a few Star Trek watches over the years, but never one this expensive, maybe this will be the one to last more than a few years…

3. Holger - June 11, 2009

Nice watch. The price is reasonable, too.

4. Starship Conductor - June 11, 2009

I have this watch. If your in the market for a new watch, I highly recommend it.

5. AJ - June 11, 2009

Electric or self-winding?

6. John Tenuto - June 11, 2009

#5

It has a battery AJ

7. NCC-73515 - June 11, 2009

This is one funny Kirk picture!!

8. NC Trek Fan - June 11, 2009

My wife gave me one of the Bradford Exchange Star Trek Collector’s Watch last year. I love it, very nice looking and I get a lot of compliments.

Yes it is a great father’s day gift.

9. Rogersen - June 11, 2009

And when your time runs out…

Yes, Star Trek casket and urn.

10. C.S. Lewis - June 11, 2009

Hmmm. Quartz movement and gold plating. No, thank you. But it does point to a big hole in the watch market. I’ve looked for a nice quality, moderately priced watch to replace my (now vintage) self-winder for years. Not a lot out there, although the Stauer efforts look nice. There are also vintage WWII NOS caches turning up.

Back to this one, How about stepping up to gold fill and a self-winding mechanical mechanism guys? Quartz cheats will never appeal to watch aficionados and plate will rub off before the warranty expires.
Sincerely,
C.S. Lewis

PLATED with 24k accents.

It’s not worth zip boys and girls.

It’s a nice COLLECTORS but you won’t retain much value.

I have more than a hunch that it’s either a Chinese movement or at best low-end Japanese.

The stainless steel band is held together by pins that are the same ones you would find in a TIMEX or ARMITRON. No thanks.

12. AdmNaismith - June 11, 2009

I’m sorry, but the ersatz stainless and the cheap gold-tone is doing nothing for me.

This is one of those times that I want to wear a reproduction of a prop.

What is Shatner wearing in that pic from TWOK? Make a watch that looks like that.

13. tiki god - June 11, 2009

I, as a watch connoisseur, turn my well trained nose up at this product. How dare they insult us watch affectionado with these things!

Tisk Tisk!

Until a product of unwavering quality is presented in a prudent form, I shall not offer my patronage to silly things such as this!

14. Millennium Vulcan - June 11, 2009

In the late 90’s I purchased a Seven of Nine digital watch at Toys R Us. It cost me three dollars at clearance price. Even though it’s a cheap kitsch watch, it’s still cooler than this one.

15. Canadianknight - June 11, 2009

Nice LOOKING watch… but as others have said… gold PLATE and quartz movement… sorry… not worth my hard-earned duckets.

John… any idea when (or if) you are going to do a review on the new DST/AA Tricorder(s)?? I got my Medical Tricorder yesterday.. .and it’s nice… but not amazing. Little disappointed with it.. curious what others have to say…

16. S. John Ross - June 11, 2009

Quality or no quality, it looks stuffy.

No thanks. Something a little sporty, please. Something that doesn’t say “I used to have a cubicle but now I get to share a corner office that isn’t too far from the water cooler.”

Star Trek: The Human Adventure Puts On A Cheap Business Suit And Commutes.

17. Brett Campbell - June 11, 2009

At least it would give a lot of Trekkers something to look at while they wait for the next movie.

18. tiberiuscan - June 12, 2009

Don’t kid your self folks. Bradford Exchange sells dozens of watches with different themes. Its the same watch only with different Face Plates and backs. It is in fact 24k Gold plating. The same watch also comes as a USMC, motorcycle, Timeless Love, Fireman, Barack Obama, US Navy, and Dale Earnhardt. Go to http://www.collectiblestoday.com and type Star Trek in the search box to see all the other Star Trek items available. Please note the Star Trek Train set with the original cast. I prefer the Laser Etched Enterprise myself.

19. SciFiMetalGirl - June 12, 2009

I wish they had the female version, I’d go for it.

20. Steve-o - June 12, 2009

hahah this watch is soooo ugly! Gold is definitley not what people are wearing these days. plus I agree with the post above- i would totally buy a replica watch of the one he was wearing in the film. that is soo much cooler then something so juvenile in nature as this watch

21. Steve-o - June 12, 2009

I also have to ask… Do you guys get any sorta perks to giving bias reviews of products? I mean- a crap watch is a crap watch i dont even have to hold the watch to tell that.

22. John Gill - June 20, 2009

Just got my watch in the mail today. Even with so many negative reviews here, I must say it looks nice, especially with a coat and tie, as I wear every weekday. None of the previous Star Trek watches I have purchased could be worn with a suit.
If you are a fan and you want something that doesn’t look like a toy, this is it. If you are looking for something to increase in general value or look like a Rolex, this is not for you.
I like it.

23. jake - July 27, 2009

do the hands illuminate in the dark thank you

24. Ashley - October 8, 2009
