Did he take his daughter - I mean "Girlfriend" to see the film? ...or is she in a completely different country serving pizza?

Agree with the poster above, DJ Neelix. This is only a fun action film in space but completely hollow.
I am very happy it revives the franchise, creates new fans and brings lots of cash so they can give us more movies. Sadly, I disagree with the statement that this is down the middle, essential, Star Trek. It is not.
This new film changes everything that the Star Trek universe has built and creates a total inconsistency with all the TV series and the movies.
I am not referring to superficial things like the appearance of the ship or the mannerisms of the crew. It is because it alters the timeline so dramatically that it erases all the future: of the original series, of TNG etc. Imagine a federation without a planet Vulcan or a Vulcan high council, etc! Imagine a Spock that is constantly caving into his human emotions and loosing his temper more than his human colleagues.
What's worse, I did not see an attempt to preserve Gene Roddenberry's philosophical ideas, his optimistic views of the future, or his big dreams, in this movie at all. In fact this movie did not have a single dialog or scene where any kind of idea was discussed at all; it was a lot of fun action but quite mindless and rather dull in the idea department. This is not what good Science Fiction is supposed to be.
Finally, on the science, the show established a reputation for trying to fit the implausibilities required for a TV show within a framework of solid science. That was especially true in TNG and up to a certain extent in some of the movies (they even got Stephen Hawking to appear in one TNG episode!) although it later degenerated into non-sensical technobabble in Voyager and enterprise. This last movie was the worst of all in that regard.
In the end the movie had no philosophy or grand ideals, no profound character development, no good science and no misteries from space to expand the human experience. How is this Star Trek? Fortunately Gene Roddenberry never got to see this. What a sad joke!

I honestly don't think Stewart would have loved it if he hadn't been involved in Star Trek himself, so I would believe he enjoyed the film on a different criteria. Or at least that's my sincerest hope, since I cannot understand how such a class act like he can love this superficial, hollow thing that is the new film.
But I guess some things are just beyond comprehension.

This new Trek movie is quite a shock to the system to TNG fans, who are used to calling the shots on the boards. Please, make it so: watch your VHS tapes of NeXt Gen episodes that you made 15 years ago; keep bashing Shatner too. I find it all amusing. TOS is back because TNG had three lousy movie out of four and Paramount had no choice, but to return to the original material. TNG is over. Get used to it.

Oh....and great that there has been a DVD scheduled for Hamlet . Good, decent and honest working class people like me don't go to the theatre (daaaarling) ;), so this will be perfect for me. I believe they have heralded David Tennant's Hamlet as the best of a generation or more....and you just know Stewart will be brilliant... as per.

Gentlemen do not lie, Sir. I don't suppose you have considered the fact that YOU'RE the one with the "terrible taste in films"? :/
