The final figures for Star Trek’s sixth weekend are in and with sales domestically and internationally of $8.8M, Star Trek has crossed the $350M mark. We have all the details plus news of Star Trek tidbits all about kids, with tips on making future Trekkies to what sneakers to buy for them.

Box Office Update: Trek tops $350M
The final figures for Star Trek’s sixth weekend are in and as expected it was in seventh place, however it was less than $50k behind the opening (and disappointing) weekend for the new Eddie Murphy family comedy Imagine That. And when you look at the daily returns, Star Trek was in sixth place, ahead of Imagine That, on both Saturday and Sunday. Star Trek’s drop from last weekend was only 34%, which BOM described as a ’solid hold.’

Creating the next generation of Trekkies
The new Star Trek film is a hit, which means it is working with movie fans of all ages, but it is never too early to start training the next generation For Trek films coming in the 2020s. To that end Wired has a new article "Passing the Phaser: 10 Tips For Turning Your Kids Into Trekkies." including calling your eldest child "Number 1" and teaching your kids to yell "Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaan" instead of cursing.

And it is never too early to start. The Movies Buzz Blog has put together some YouTube clips of 7 Kids Guaranteed to Become Trekkies. Here is just one of them:

Star Trek: The Sneaker

1. Tom - June 15, 2009

WIll they have jet sneakers a la Spock in STV?

2. rm10019 - June 15, 2009

those are some shiney shoes boy

3. braxus - June 15, 2009

Not far to go before it beats Star Trek 1 for total domestic revenue (with the adjusted for inflation figure).

I helped in all this as I just saw it a 5th time last Saturday with my sister.

4. richpit - June 15, 2009

I’m all about those shoes! Hells yeah, baby! Shiny space shoes!

5. AJ - June 15, 2009

My kids, 8 (daughter) and 7 (son) have been force-fed TOS all their lives. My son enjoyed the manliness and SFX of the film, but it didn’t leave a lasting impression on him.

However, my 8-year-old daughter thought the Spock/Uhura romance was “stupid,” (i.e. uncharacteristic of Spock, from what I could uncover in the debriefing), which is a good, healthy reaction for a 21st Century “Trekker-in-Training.”

6. Odkin - June 15, 2009

Those sneakers would go together well with the classic Spock helmet.

7. Sean4000 - June 15, 2009

Of all the soles i’ve encountered in my shoe shopping. These were the most ….silver!

8. Kirk's Revenge - June 15, 2009

Those shoes look more John Glenn than Captain Kirk.
But I’ll buy a pair anyway :)

9. S. John Ross - June 15, 2009

“Dear Payless Shoes,

We at Paramount appreciate your creativity in pursuing ways to develop and promote our Star Trek brand as footwear, but according to memos from our brand management team, the idea this time around was to _NOT_ make those who have enjoyed our product feel like the kind of people most likely to recieve wedgies and get picked last for kickball at recess. So, maybe not with the silver. Save the design, perhaps, for the forthcoming Michael Jackson retro-sympathetic-nostalgia fad Viacom and Disney are cooking up for late summer 2011 … with just a few design tweaks they could feel very “Captain Eo.”

Your Pals,
Paramount”

10. TrekTwenty - June 15, 2009

So… if Payless makes these shoes in a more casual (NOT high-top) style, with a more neutral (LESS flamboyant) color scheme, I might actually buy a pair.

11. Trek Ahead - June 15, 2009

I’ve been a trekker / trekkie since the show first aired back in the 60’s.
I really wanted to like it, and went to see it with high hopes, but I have to say that I was hugely disappointed!

The whole time travel / alternate timeline premise is old, and a poor, lazy excuse so JJ Abrams could ignore the history and integrity of established characters and technological designs.

An insipid, low brow, formulaic, Hollywood action film inspired by avarice has ruined Star Trek for me!

Hollywood should get James Cawley to make the next Trek film!
He would almost certainly get it right!
JJ Abrams admitted he was not a Trek fan before making the film and it shows.

12. ABQ_trekker - June 15, 2009

I’m sorry, 6th week? OK, I think we’ve officially run out of movie news.

13. jastrek_montreal - June 15, 2009

I gotta say this people… I’m still disappointed with the International take. Aren’t you guys ? I thought it would do a tad better then that. Perhaps…. 200 million.

14. S. John Ross - June 15, 2009

#12: But that, in itself, is kind of good news, at least for Paramount … I predicted (wrongly) that any high-budget Star Trek film would absolutely need long legs … that it must, in other words, live long in order to prosper.

I didn’t count on the thing behaving like a for-real blockbuster :) So far it looks like it’s got no legs to speak of (5 weeks at 10% or better of peak is respectably good, but not noteworthy, for a film of its type) and doesn’t NEED ‘em … it scooped in the big cash in the first few weekends, and now everything else is bonus by the millions … it could close in a week and still be a resounding (financial) success.

Depending on how any given fan feels about the movie, it maybe wasn’t a success in the ways that count, but those who are big fans of Paramount making money (and thus the franchise prospering at the bean-counter level) have a lot to smile about in a six-week report (especially when they consider how truly icing-on-the-cake the week-to-week take has become).

#11: “An insipid, low brow, formulaic, Hollywood action film inspired by avarice has ruined Star Trek for me! ”

Egad, one film can “ruin Star Trek” for you and yet your Trek love managed to survive the entire existence of Voyager?

15. JimJ - June 15, 2009

Amazing how good news is posted and the bashers have to show up and proceed to do their work. Ughhh! I loved it…6 times and planning on at least 2 more viewings.

16. Chris J - June 15, 2009

#7 There is a quote for every occasion :)

17. Jonathan - June 16, 2009

I’ve seen Star Trek 8 times now – first 3 in real IMAX, then regular theatres and even a drive-in. Plan on going one more time to take a brother in law who is visiting from Egypt who hasn’t seen it yet. I never get tired of seeing this movie!

18. girl6 - June 16, 2009

Saw the movie 6 times and am so buying the kicks.

19. Doc Rice - June 16, 2009

If you’re a REAL Trekkie, the number of times you’ve seen it would be in the double-digits. I’ve seen it 10 times so far, 8 of them in IMAX, most of the viewings in the first week, and half the time being first in line.

Or maybe that just makes me a loser. I don’t know anymore. Probably the latter.

20. Cobalt 1365 - June 16, 2009

#19 This here’s a REAL Trekkie with no more money. I saw it once and I have fond memories of my solitary time in the theatre enjoying every whiplash second of ST09. if you would be interested in improving my trekkie status, may I suggest sending a couple tickets my way, the gesture would be greatly appreciated

21. Jim Nightshade - June 16, 2009

jj got so much right-finally an epic grand star trek! the scope-the visual inventiveness, the characters, acting, action, humor, music–the many nods to trek fans, majel & nimoy to pass the torch, and finally, trek is a kick ass movie! Thanks to all involved-this film actually deserves to be the number one movie of the year! oh yeh it is at least for now-i am surprised its not a bigger hit overseas–i am planning to see it one more time before it leaves theatres which will make it six times for me-trek on–oh and the sneakers–look stolen from the space family robinson–lost in space–danger will robinson–

22. toddk - June 16, 2009

Great News!!!

Regardless of how long it took to get to 350 million, I would say the movie is a great success!

Also, I am going to accept the show enterprise as official canon. I’ll be watching for the Blu-ray sets, In fact Blu-ray for all trek shows!!!

Thank you paramount, JJ Abrams and the team!! and most of all the fans!!

23. Spockish - June 16, 2009

So do the shoes have Warp Nacelles pop out of the sides of the shoe soles, and scottys voice say ie captain, you’ve now got the energy to go warp 11.

And if you meet up with a Romulan will Kirk grab their clocking device so you can hide in broad day light.

24. trekboi - June 16, 2009

part of me does not want Trek 09 to beat Star Trek: The Motion Picture, my favorite Star Trek film but it looks like it’s going to happen…
as long as it helps the franchise!

Man i want thoes sneakers!!!!

25. Charlie - June 16, 2009

The Cat from Red Dwarf needs those star trek shoes. :P

26. Johnny Ice - June 16, 2009

#24. Star Trek can only beat ST:TMP in domestic gross. Overall ST:TMP is still the champion. It grossed approx:$160-170 million overseas and total approx: $400 million worldwide. I don’t see Star Trek breaking these 2 numbers.

27. Gilberto Bud - June 16, 2009

24, I agree, TMP wa great. And a HUGE box office in Brazil. This Star Trek, as good as it actually was, was badly distributed everywhere, not only here. It grossed in Brazil just a little better than NEMESIS!! The reason is simple: NEMESIS opened here in the summer (our summer), just like TMP. Producers now want FAST money, not BIG money. It´s a shame…

28. Check the Circuit! - June 16, 2009

Looks like UP is the first real threat to bypass Star Trek as the 2009 Box Office Champ…of movies that have already been released. Of course there are a couple of little films around the corner that just may challenge it’s reign.

29. Capt Mike of the Terran Empire - June 16, 2009

Well. Lets keep on Treking. Great news for Trek. I know i have helped with my 10 and soon to be 11th view this weekend. O the next Movie i predict at least 500 Million for the Trek 2 or Trek 12. Which ever you prefer.

30. Duncan MacLeod - June 16, 2009

I think we really need a forum. People are STILL complaining about the movie in every thread that even mentions anything.

31. Capt Mike of the Terran Empire - June 16, 2009

From this moment on as a directive from the Emperior!!!! of the Terran Empire anyone complains about the new movie will get 24 hours in the Agoniser booth.

32. Weerd1 - June 16, 2009

Went and saw the movie with my wife and 18 year old son again yesterday. Found the T’Plana Hath, did not see R2-D2. Saw Jeffery Quinn (briefly) and may have spotted James Cawley a second time.

Is it just me, or is there one tribble in the cage when we first see it, and then two when Scotty gets up?

Noticed there’s gold rank braid on the sleeves of the Kelvin uniforms. Also noticed three separate types of female uniforms on the Enterprise.

I really think Playmates should do random crewmember five packs in various colors and genders.

33. JimJ - June 16, 2009

#26-You heard it here first, buddy….Star Trek is going to get to $400 million. Kinda symbolic, Spock died and then came back to life. Star Trek was pretty much dead but has come back to life. Appropriate that Spock prime was in it!!!

34. Valenti - June 16, 2009

Those sneakers look pretty damn awesome.

35. JimJ - June 16, 2009

Ok, ok…I admit it…I misread a figure up above. $400 million will be tough to get, but it WILL get to $375 million. I’m going to back off a bit about $400 million, but who knows? What I can’t wait for is the dvd sales. I think it’s going to be even more surprising in dvd sales/rentals!!!!

36. Nodar - June 16, 2009

I went to take my dad last Saturday night to see it (his first time) and it was sold out!!! I never thought it’d still be sold out this long after the premiere…

Star Trek certainly will Live Long and Prosper

37. Duncan MacLeod - June 16, 2009

32. Weerd1 – June 16, 2009

Before someone starts complaining about a “Continuity” error with the tribbles (I.E. hair is parted on the left in one sceen, and parted on the right in the next camera shot 2 seconds later)

I will head this one off at the pass…

This is an easter egg, showing how fast tribbles breed!

Duncan Macleod (For the win)

38. Trekkie16 - June 16, 2009

I will be buying a pair of those cool sneakers.

ST will certainly break 240 mil but not sure it will break the 250 mark. Let’s all go see it one more time.

Why are people still complaining about the movie? No it isn’t perfect but JJ did what he was supposed to do: revive a dying franchise and introduce a new generation to Trek. Mission Impossible accomplished.

Cute kids; love the little girl getting beamed.

39. JimJ - June 16, 2009

#38-Some people just want to continue the stereotype of Trek fans. I, for one, like the fact that Trek has become cool again. I’m not gonna complain about minor little things in an alternate reality/time. I’m thrilled that the chains have been shed and Trek can boldly go once again without worrying about every little tiny thing violating the biggest handicapper of them all-CANON, or is it CANNON? Beats me, since I really could care less about it! Howeever, I would love to use one on the other, if you get my jist?! lol

40. afterace - June 16, 2009

I find it amazing it still outpaces Salvation, even that the latter came out 2 weeks later or so.

41. JohnWA - June 16, 2009

Because ST09 is essentially a popcorn movie, it’ll probably do well in DVD sales and rentals as well. There’s no question that this movie will make a lot of money when all is said and done.

42. Zip - June 16, 2009

Anthony,
I haven’t see anything on Trekmovie yet regarding the Return of Star Trek to TV, Perhaps I missed it, but just in case, here ’s a link I came accross this morning,
http://tvguide.sympatico.msn.ca/TVNews/Articles/090616_star_trek_show_AD
I hope it’s true,

43. Closettrekker - June 16, 2009

Well, I contributed a couple of IMAX (where it has made an encore appearance here in Houston) ticket sales to those figures, having seen it for a 4th time overall on Saturday (3rd in IMAX).

I have purchased a total of ten tickets for ST09—at a total cost of $131. I think I’ve done my part, although I’ll probably see it one more time at the Alamo Drafthouse over a few beers one of these days.

Prior to ST09, I had only seen two Star Trek movies more than once during its initial run in theaters—-TWOK and TVH (and neither of them more than twice). My wife had never been willing to see any movie more than once (and never cared at all for Trek), but she has now seen ST09 twice (one regular, one IMAX).

Star Trek hasn’t been this fun for me since 1986. Bring on the sequel!

44. Closettrekker - June 16, 2009

#42—TV Guide is just a little late to the party. TM covered that story many months ago.

45. Gul B. - June 16, 2009

Saw the movie for the 3rd (and, until 2011, probably last) time yesterday. Spotted Chris Doohan sitting beside Simon Pegg in the transporter room and the breeding tribble. Somebody asked if there was a member of Arex’ species on the Kelvin: there is an middle-aged Asian communications officer on the bridge. The second time she is shown (in a close-up) a very Arexy-looking head is visible behind her. But as you can’t see the alien’s body, we may never know for sure …
Alas, I didn’t find R2D2.
But only now I realized something alarming: There is a Black Hole in my solar system!!! Help! Get it out!! Get it ouuu…..

Btw, some of the posts here are giving me nostalgia: they remind me of the Great TOS/TNG War, which raged far into the 90s. That was a time when you couldn’t put 3 Trekkies together in a room without starting a serious name-calling session. The Galaxy trembled! Or not.

46. Hosetlh - June 16, 2009

BACK to the topic of Trek shoes, I’d like to see “Vans” style shoes with the delta-pattern shown on the new uniform tops. I really don’t see me sporting silver high tops, although I will go take a look.

47. spockatatic - June 16, 2009

KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNN!!!!!
LOL I find that so funny.

48. Lendorien - June 16, 2009

Kids wearing those sneakers are just asking to be picked on.

49. RD - June 16, 2009

28. Check the Circuit! wrote: Looks like UP is the first real threat to bypass Star Trek as the 2009 Box Office Champ

Forget “UP”. I’d start worrying about “THE HANGOVER”. It grossed over $5M yesterday to bring it up to $110.3M – those are almost Trek numbers and it’s R rated, plus word of mouth is taking off like wildfire.

Meanwhile ST09 came in 6th with less than $700M. With competition coming: The Proposal (the first “chick-flick” of the Summer and it’s getting great reviews), Year One and Transformers – better get out there and drive that box office up while there’s still time!

50. S. John Ross - June 16, 2009

#30: “People are STILL complaining about the movie in every thread that even mentions anything.”

And people are still praising it. And many of us (raises hand) do a bit of both.

This is as it should be … right?

51. MC1 Doug - June 16, 2009

Well, I was going to go see the movie again today until three teen thugs tried to kick in the front door of my house, in broad daylight no less.

Fortunately, the deadbolt kept them out, but in the aftermath it wrecked the doorjam. Police were here in less than three minutes, alas the cretins were long gone by then.

Needless to say, I am not in a very good mood right at the moment.

52. MC1 Doug - June 16, 2009

Anyone got a working phaser in the event the idiots return?

53. Bob Tompkins - June 16, 2009

Sequelitis should be setting in soon….

Hot topics IMO

1. Mirror Universe
2. Klingon themed
3. Khaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnn
4. Q? Yeah Q! Only the best Star Trek villain ever. DeLancie may be getting a little long in the tooth, but they successfully recast everyone else.
5. And now for something completely different….

Not high on my list
97. Borg
98. Time Travel
99. The Search for Vulcan
100. Harry Mudd [Quick funny cameo OK]

54. Christine - June 17, 2009

I WANT THOSE SHOES. :D

“…7: Refer to your car as “The Enterprise NCC-1701-A” and going to visit the in-laws as “going through the worm-hole to fight the Jem’Hadar.” Nothing says how much you enjoy a visit to the in-laws when you liken them to a violent warrior race jacked up on drugs. …”

That second part CRACKED ME UP. My mom would probably say that about the relatives on my Dad’s side. xDD

Jem’Hadar for the WIN.

55. Closettrekker - June 17, 2009

#49—-”I’d start worrying about “THE HANGOVER”. It grossed over $5M yesterday to bring it up to $110.3M – those are almost Trek numbers and it’s R rated, plus word of mouth is taking off like wildfire.”

Indeed. I was at a local theater Saturday night in Houston for yet another look at Star Trek, and I saw three sold out showings for ‘The Hangover’ (the only movie sold out on any screens). The good news is that the 930 IMAX showing of Star Trek was still about 3/4 full after all this time—-clearly a good decision to bring it back for an encore IMAX performance, even if only through this week.

56. Spock - June 17, 2009

buy silver sneakers so some black guy can steal them?

No THANKS.

57. MC1 Doug - June 17, 2009

56: WHAT?????

Please tell me you didn’t just post a racial slur!!!!???

58. S. John Ross - June 17, 2009

#57:

Would him telling you that change it in any way?

59. Bob Tompkins - June 17, 2009

56

C’mon, clean it up. That was offensive unless you’re a Rush Limbaugh dittohead.

60. MC1 Doug - June 17, 2009

#58: Actually, I was calling attention to it in the hopes the post would be deleted. What’s your point, if I may ask?

I am seriously offended by the post!

I really would like to think Trekkers are above such things, but after the recent gay flame wars, now I can say I really have seen it all… and sadly, realize some Trek fans are no better than some of the riff-raff that are responsible for events like the killing at the National Holocaust Museum, the recent killing of a doctor, or the hundreds of racially motived crimes perpetrated in our country.

I am truly saddened that some people who claim to be TREK fans have not found it possible to assimilate the Roddenberry-held beliefs that we are all equal and all are deserving of respect and dignity.

There. I am now climbing down off my soapbox.

I feel fine.

61. Harry Ballz - June 18, 2009

Hey, most of us are pretty good here, but some others, when it comes to travelling the path of enlightenment, can’t seem to find the “on ramp”!

62. MC1 Doug - June 18, 2009

Agreed, Harry… sadly.

63. BP - June 19, 2009

#7 – well said!

#49 – I guess it wouldn’t bother me if The Hangover passed Star Trek eventually, Star Trek succeeded where it needed to … it is a hit and has guaranteed a sequel.

Besides The Hangover was good in its own right, dumb buddy comedy, but well executed and pretty funny.
