by Anthony Pascale , Filed under: Great Links, Star Trek (2009 film) , trackback

In another possible sign of the resurgence of the franchise, the new Star Trek movie has been nominated for five Teen Choice Awards. The film itself received a Best Movie nomination, along with nods for a number of the actors. All the details below, including how you can vote, plus we have a look at Chris Pine’s high school yearbook photo and the latest box office update.

Is Star Trek the Teen’s Choice?
The teen vampire movie Twilight leads the nomination list with twelve, and High School Musical 3 picked up ten nominations, but just being back on the radar for the important teen market is a bit of an achievement for Trek. The five awards the Trek film is up for are:

Zachary Quinto is also up for Best TV Villain for his role in Heroes. Also JJ Abrams TV shows Lost and Fringe are both up for a number of awards. A full list is available at the official site.

If you are between the ages of 13-19, then you can vote now at teenchoiceawards.com.

The Teen Choice Awards will air Monday August 10th on FOX. No word yet on if any of the Star Trek celebrities will attend or present.

Pine in High School
Speaking of fresh faced teens in Star Trek, yesterday AOL’s Pop Eater put up a gallery of of high school yearbook photos of the ‘rich and famous’, including this one from Chris Pine from his senior year.

Chris, smart move losing the goatee

1. Steven - June 16, 2009

Glad to hear “Trek” is still doing well at the box office. Soon, it will become the most attended Trek movie ever. Congrats to J.J. Abrams and crew!

God bless!

2. Blake Powers - June 16, 2009

You guys should see my yearbook photo. Sheesh.

3. Loskene - June 16, 2009

Is it just me or does young Pine resemble Dexter Morgan? (Can’t remember the actor’s name, is it Michael C. Hall?)

4. Mike Ten - June 16, 2009

Man that is great news about Trek. It will definately hit $240M. Transformers is getting mixed reviews already so who knows what will happen this weekend.

5. C.S. Lewis - June 16, 2009

Oh dear Lord, that man was … a … oh my.

Thank him above for growth spurts and hair clippers (and razors).

Sincerely,
C.S. Lewis

6. Mike Ten - June 16, 2009

Hey, I didn’t even notice Chris Pine’s (movie?) goatee in the photo, is he supposed to be the mirror Kirk?

7. Danya Romulus - June 16, 2009

Cool, it’s not Chris’ HS picture though, it’s from his senior year of college at Berkeley, assuming the date is correct.

8. Anthony Thompson - June 16, 2009

Looks like Trek will easily hit the 250 mill. mark that Paramount had projected domestivally. Probably not the 150 international. Still, a huge success by any reckoning!

9. TrekTwenty - June 16, 2009

@ 4

Ahem.

I only do this because I already correct two of my coworkers earlier today…. Transformers 2 doesn’t come out in the US until next Wednesday, the 24th. Or Tuesday at midnight. This weekend is The Proposal and Year One =)

10. Hat Rick - June 16, 2009

What happened to Wolverine? It apparently fell off the charts.

11. JimJ - June 16, 2009

Quinto may not like what you said about HIM and HIS role on Heroes. lol Sorry, I usually don’t nitpick, put I laughed a whole lot at that one.

12. Brett Campbell - June 16, 2009

Hollywood let Eddie Murphy make another movie? Imagine that, indeed.

13. Lt. Ricky - June 16, 2009

Kirk v. Spock is nominated for “Best ‘Rumble’”? It – like all of Kirk’s fights – was one-sided. Kirk lost…badly. Granted, it was cool, but not the best.

14. CarlG - June 16, 2009

Well, he cleaned up nicely between than and now, eh?

I don’t put much stock (aka: any stock) in the Teen Choice Awards, but…..

Please, please, PLEASE let Trek kick the crap out of Twilight. James Tiberius Kirk does not get beaten by sparkly emo vampires. Ever.

15. JimJ - June 16, 2009

Define lost….to me, he basically won every fight. 1st one he lost, it brought him to Starfleet. 2nd one he lost helped him appreciate Sulu’s fencing skills enough to return the favor (of saving his life). 3rd one he lost, it made him acting captain. 4th one he lost, he was left on the ledge while the Romulan plummeted to his final death (if he wasn’t dead already from the “gunshot wound”). Seems like he won an awful lot from losing-lol

16. Boborci - June 16, 2009

5. C.S. Lewis – June 16, 2009

LOL

17. KennyB - June 16, 2009

@ 14–Speaking as the father of a 13 year old girl who went to both movies. Kirk stands no chance against the mighty Edward Cullen. Sad but true. I however, consider it a success that a whole new generation is even considering Trek “cool”. JJ and crew did what they set out to do. And made a few bucks along the way!

18. KennyB - June 16, 2009

@ 16………Good evening Mr Orci and thank you. Nice to have a chance to say it directly to you! Grew up watching Trek 330pm every afternoon after school in the 70’s. You gave me that feeling back!

19. JimJ - June 16, 2009

#16-It’s great to see you here. Gotta tell you that this movie is making it tough to save back the $600 per month I’m trying to put in my savings account. Saw the movie last week with my parents (who seldom see anything Trek) and they liked it, too. Let me think….that is 2 times in IMAX (which was awesome, by the way) and 4 times in regular theaters. I’m thinking I have at least a couple more theater visits left in me for Trek. The actors you all picked were just outstanding! Have I groveled enough? ;-)

20. Geodesic - June 16, 2009

That is what the Evil, Mirror Universe Kirk looks like.

21. Spectre_7 - June 16, 2009

Rofl he reminds me of a Seth Rogen high school pothead :P

22. MC1 Doug - June 16, 2009

I cry whenever I look at my high school senior mug shot. I had hair then–and lots of it. waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

:-))

23. Robert H. - June 16, 2009

Agreed. Losing the goatee was a smart move.

24. fansince66 - June 16, 2009

I’m so glad star trek wins kudos. It deserves kudos. Hey mr. orci, what’s next?

Produce more newtrek for us.Please?

PS. no khan.Something different, please.

25. Skeptic - June 16, 2009

#7: I noticed that too, unless Pine was 21 when he graduated high school. Anthony, maybe you should correct that…

26. S. John Ross - June 16, 2009

#14 sez “James Tiberius Kirk does not get beaten by sparkly emo vampires. Ever.”

No, but Douchebag Yuppie Kirk might.

27. Anthony Pascale - June 16, 2009

actually i believe AOL got the year wrong, i have found the picture online from back in april attributed to be his HS photo.

28. Capt. of the USS Anduril - June 16, 2009

Gah….I wish I could see the movie in theaters again to help the numbers out, but my theater doesn’t carry it anymore. :-(

29. Spockish - June 16, 2009

I thought Spock had the goatee beard, and Kirk was Mr. Alpha Male whom thought he was gods gift to women. So the way Pine looked in High school, and being Kirk in the Alternate Universe, he’d never be the angry one yelling Khaaaaaaaan.

But bouncing between Alternate Universes and Jumping around the Time Line really can put many kinks in the story line that make things hard to figure out. But doing such things sure can fill bank accounts.

30. Spockish - June 16, 2009

#28 Captain guess you’ll have to wait for the DVD, then you can buy extra copies and then you can give gifts to others and help convert all into Trek Lovers.

31. Spockish - June 16, 2009

To Mr. Orci,

The odds of you getting a story idea from hear un legal fears make the chance Very Slim to None.

I have ideas, and voiced a few here, to not cause problems for you or you fellow witters, I’ll just give you some advice about story line to use.

The Great Bird of the Galaxy liked making moral comment on how things need to be done. My favorite idea is how not to let us humans become defendant on others to survive. We need to be independent and self supportive of our destiny. Stories vary rarely need be remakes or previews and if there is a remake it needs to be from a totally non thought of angle. Khan was good and a lifesaver for the Federation but a remake of a continuance is almost a wooden stake to the vampire trying to suck blood from an old story.

In 1996 when I saw DSN may come to an end and I loved having two Trek Shows at one time, but diffrent angles of the story. I started sending e-mails to Paramount that the next Trek show sould be one that starts at the beginning and shows us how things began. I was thinking of how we got off this rock and went out of the SOL solar system. But they did a good job with Enterprise. I’m not saying I helped create it or even wish to say I was any part of it. All I wish to say is Star Trek is a great idea and will help us a non apocalyptic future.

[...] stronie trekmovie.com ukazało się zdjęcie Chrisa Pine’a z czasów szkoły średniej i pewnie cały świat [...]

34. Iowagirl - June 17, 2009

Twilight, High School Musical,…STAR TREK!

Perfect company…:)

35. Chuck Fu - June 17, 2009

Pine could be my son. And you’re b*tchin’ about HIS pic…

36. DJT - June 17, 2009

I’d like to sit in on some of Bob and Alex’s brainstorming sessions.

That would be cool.

And um, oh yeah, Go Bears!

37. Dovile - June 17, 2009

re: Kirk vs. Edward Cullen

17 KennyB is right, the majority of teen girls will vote for Cullen, because he’s and looks younger, and also falls into the category of ‘cute’, besides, Twilight is a romance, so naturally many girls will fancy (and vote for) him more than Kirk. of course, the result will depend on how the other voters will vote.

Speaking of nominations, do you think ST movie will get any Oscars and how many? I’d say 1 statue for FX is granted.

38. Lou - June 17, 2009

dude! chris pine has a big head!

39. trekboi - June 17, 2009

Loved the film- it gave me back the Star Trek I dreamed of as a child…

Mr Orci if ur still around can u find space for a discret gay character so i dont have to be the one minority not included in the Star trek universe?
Would only take one line, one reference…

Maybe in ur Alternate Universe Homosexuality wasnt “cured” with humanities other “dideases” as some have concluded.
its the only thing I really care about.

40. focuspuller - June 17, 2009

3.

You had me on the floor with that. I totally agree. Maybe Pine should do a film version of Dexter.

41. Shadowcat - June 17, 2009

Unfortunately, Twilight will clean up during theTeen Choice Awards. Twilight tends to attract the “girly” (read feminine) girls that fancy “cute” guys like the protagonist Edward Cullen. The girls like myself that were nerds and geeks were ridiculed because we were considered less than feminine or attractive. Twilight just reinforces all of the negative stereotypes about teenage girls. My love of geek culture (comics, science fiction, and fantasy) singled me out amongst my peers as an outcast and a freak. I am of African-American descent which made me even more of an outcast amonst my same race peers. I have always had more in common with those of other races than my own. I actually feel more comfortable as a nerd/geek in the UK than I ever was in the US.

At least Star Trek is on the teen radar now. Maybe a whole new generation of teens will become Star Trek fans. I have been a fan since I was nine.

I hated high school. I don’t ever want to revist those awful days.

42. Drew - June 17, 2009

Chris Pine’s yearbook caption/quote found below the picture:

“Cha, bro!”

43. trekboi - June 17, 2009

yes sorry i went off topic but wanted to ask mr Orci about a possible gay character in the next film if I saw him online- i’m voting on Sulu (cause John is so cute)

Love the teen choice nominations!
I think its great that teens are into star trek- they will mature to appreciate it on a deeper level just like the kids in the 70’s 80’s and 90’s- but we have to keep engaging new audiences.

$232.5 million- so relieved- I liked Nemisis & thought it would at least top insurrection… oops.

44. MC1 Doug - June 18, 2009

#37: “Speaking of nominations, do you think ST movie will get any Oscars and how many? I’d say 1 statue for FX is granted.”

Agreed. I also think ST09 is a shoo-in for sound.

And I’d say it will be in a tight race for best screenplay with “Hangover.”

(yuck yuck yuck– I’d say I should keep my day job, but I still haven’t found one yet)

oh… and I kinda like Pine’s goatee.

45. Trek Nerd Central - June 18, 2009

Wow, that high school photo of Chris Pine looks like a _spoof_ of a high school photo of Chris Pine.

Thank goodness for razors.

46. RD - June 18, 2009

#44, it might not be a tight race in the Oscar’s for The Hangover, but The Hangover may well give Trek a run at the box office. While it opened lower than both Up and Trek, it is actually outperforming those films for the same time (13 days) and momentum seems to be building. Word of mouth is only fueling this little sleeper phenomenon. Everybody I talk to says they are going to see it when they ask if I have. For an R rated comedy this one is truly a phenomenon at the box office.

47. CarlG - June 18, 2009

@26: No, Yuppie Douchebag Kirk is what we would have gotten if that Cullen guy from Twilight had played Kirk.

**shudder**

48. I have been and always will be a Trekkie - June 19, 2009

Over $350mil? Congratulations Star Trek!!!

49. jezza - September 13, 2009

How many of these teens actually saw The Hangover? I’m just asking because it’s rated R, meaning a lot of teens wouldn’t be able to see The Hangover. Had the votes been decided by people in their 20s, Taylor Launtner would have finished 4th behind Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis.

All the women I have known had this to say: Both Taylor and Robert are as sexy as a pair of gay slugs.
