Sci-Fi Movies Monday: Alien, Iron Man, GI Joe, Wolfman, District 9, Avatar + more August 3, 2009

by Rosario T. Calabria , Filed under: Sci-Fi , trackback

There is all sorts of news in the world of genre films this week, starting off with Ridley Scott signing on for the Alien sequel. There are also new previews and a viral site for Iron Man2, more buzz for GI Joe, a delay for Wolfman and more. Plus we have some image and vid previews, including posters for Avatar and a new District 9 trailer.

GENRE MOVIE NEWS FOR THE WEEK

Jon Favreau Interested in 3-D for Iron Man 3 + New Viral Site
Although he wasn’t able to use the technology for "Iron Man 2", director Jon Favreau tells MTV that he would like to do the next film in the series in 3-D ( and/or IMAX–you can watch the video clip below):

"I had talked to Marvel after I had seen [some of Avatar] about doing Iron Man in 3-D.  There are a few drawbacks to it at this point, there’s more cost involved.  And there’s also, it forces you to shoot digitally…but I think that as the digital technology gets better doing 3-D is going to be a lot easier.  Certainly for Iron Man I think it’ll work out well.  I was hoping to get a shot at doing it this time around, it didn’t work out that way.  And IMAX is also very compelling. So either actually shooting in IMAX format or blowing up to IMAX both of those are looking really good right now and we’re looking into doing an IMAX release as well."

In other news, Marvel Studios/Paramount Pictures have unveiled a new viral website at StarkIndustriesNow.com where you can apply for a job at Stark Industries.  Click the banner image below to explore the website.

Meanwhile, SCI FI Wire got a chance to ask "Mad Men" star John Slattery — who will play Tony Stark’s dad Howard Stark in "Iron Man 2" — about his role: "All I can tell you is it’s in a flashback," Slattery teased, before adding "It’s not that extensive. It’s really Tony’s story. It’s just an introduction. Hopefully it will go on from there." And rounding out the week’s "Iron Man 2" news, here are few more Comic-Con recaps: io9 and Cinematical each have their Comic-Con reports up on their round-table sessions with Scarlett Johanson (Black Widow) and Cinematical has a report on the round-table discussion with Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man/Tony Stark).  "Iron Man 2" hits theaters on May 7, 2010.

Ridley Scott Will Direct Alien Prequel
Ridley Scott is returning to direct a direct prequel to his 1979 film sci-fi hit "Alien".  20th Century Fox had originally decided to go with Carl Rinsch to direct (with Scott’s blessing), but plans changed after the studio and Scott Free (which will produce) saw the pitch from writer Jon Spaihts, whom they’ve hired to pen the script.

Bryce Dallas Howard Replaces Rachelle Lefevre on ‘Eclipse’; Lefevre Responds
Summit Entertainment has replaced actress Rachelle Lefevre with Bryce Dallas Howard ("Terminator Salvation") to play the role of Victoria in "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse".  Lefevre — who portrayed the role in "Twilight" as well as ‘New Moon’ (hitting theaters on November 20, 2009) — released a statement expressing her shuck at the announcement:

“I was stunned by Summit’s decision to recast the role of Victoria for ‘Eclipse.’ I was fully committed to the ‘Twilight’ saga, and to the portrayal of Victoria. I turned down several other film opportunities and, in accordance with my contractual rights, accepted only roles that would involve very short shooting schedules.”

That led to Summit releasing their own statement on the situation, in which they stood by their decision:

We at Summit Entertainment are disappointed by Rachelle Lefevre’s recent comments which attempt to make her career choices the fault of the Studio. Her decision to discuss her version of the scheduling challenges publicly has forced the Studio to set the record straight and correct the facts.

They then go on to make their case.  Click here to read both releases in full.

Good Summer Fun Expected from G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
I bought into the spin that "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" would be horrible, despite there being very little in the way of actual evidence supporting that.  And if early reviews are any indication, it looks like I was way wrong because it turns out that it just may be a fun ride after all.  The Stephen Sommers-directed film is currently sitting at a very healthy 88% on Rotten Tomatoes (7 Fresh/ 1 Rotten) and although that may go down some when more reviews are added in, it’s certainly a higher initial positive ranking than many had expected. Here’s a quick rundown of some of the mainstream reviews:

SCI FI Wire
Stephen Sommers’ film captures the silly energy that made the series such a childhood favorite and finds a way to fulfill the expectations of fanboys from 13 to 30 (okay, 33) in the process

JoBlo
G.I. Joe may not be a great movie, but it sure is a hoot and a half, just make sure to find that inner child in you that still likes to play pretend.

CHUD
If I was 10 years old, GI Joe would be one of the best movies I had ever seen. As a grown up it’s one of the better summer movies; a delightfully light, fun and action-packed kick in the ass.

HitFix
‘G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra’ is… a summer movie, through and through, pure pulp preposterousness, one of the most successful little-boy adventure movies in a long time.

And Collider has posted an extensive set of interviews with the cast, producer and director.  Here are the direct links:

The Wolfman Delayed…Again + Other Release Additions and Changes
For the second time in its production schedule "The Wolfman" has been delayed.  This time Universal Pictures has pushed back the release of the Joe Johnston-directed project, featuring Benicio del Toro and Anthony Hopkins, three months — to February 12, 2010 from November 6, 2009.  As you may remember the studio had initially pushed the film from its April 3, 2009 release date.  That’s a total of nearly 1 year in delays (10 months to be precise).  Here are some other release changes/additions:

2. vorta23492392932939230 - August 3, 2009

I just hope GI Joe isn’t horrible. Please grant us one adaptation that takes its source material seriously and isn’t just a reference fest.

3. Mike Ten - August 3, 2009

I agree vorta23492392932939230, I’m kind of looking forward to GI Joe. I just wasn’t into Transformers 2 and will wait to see it on DVD.

If I have to spend $8 to $10 dollars per ticket the movie previews have to look good and Transformers 2 looked like more of the same with the added bonus of robots having testicles.

4. jgavin - August 3, 2009

Thundercats the movie?

5. S. John Ross - August 3, 2009

#2: “Please grant us one adaptation that takes its source material seriously and isn’t just a reference fest.”

Hey, the Huston adaptation of “The Maltese Falcon” totally qualifies, and … and … there’s also the, uh … the … there’s …

The Huston adaptation of The Maltese Falcon TOTALLY qualifies, is my point. Totally. And that’s as recent as 1941! Geez, it’s like gimme gimme gimme with you people :)

6. sean - August 3, 2009

Uh, it’s GI Joe. The source material didn’t take itself seriously.

7. mjmjr91 - August 3, 2009

lol Saw 7 in 3D… I guess the sixth wont be the last one after all…

8. Radioactive Spock - August 3, 2009

fta: “Vin Diesel won’t do another PG-13 film even though that’s what the studio wants. He’d also like to do a smaller, less expensive film more in the style of 2000’s “Pitch Dark”

should be “Pitch Black”, not “Pitch Dark”

9. THX-1138 - August 3, 2009

District 9 could be the absolute surprise science fiction movie of the year. Along with the wonderful Moon.

Too bad, the BILLION dollar blockbuster will have to do without your $8. Glad to hear they’ll get your DVD $$, so they’ll earn half-a-billion more after the movie closes.

As for GI:Joe, if it does half as well as Transformers, it will knock Trek down another peg for the year to 6th, by the end of the month. All things considered, a good year for Paramount.

The good news is, The Wolfman getting pushed to next year is one less film to challenge Trek’s box-office status.

11. Andy Patterson - August 3, 2009

Uh oh….Joe Johnston’s Wolfman getting pushed back. What does that mean for Captain America? Or is that why it’s pushed back?

Cool Iron Man news all around.

Just found out Thor won’t be speaking Elizabethan English. Yay verily, that is a bummer. I say thee nay to that decision.

#10: “Too bad, the BILLION dollar blockbuster will have to do without your $8. Glad to hear they’ll get your DVD $$, so they’ll earn half-a-billion more after the movie closes.”

Lemme get this straight: #3’s $8 (apparently he lives in a deeply discounted theater zone) is inconsequential to the crapfest hack movie, but whatever money he pays for the crapfest hack DVD will be worth half a billion?

It’s good to see you up to your usual standards of logic, RD.

13. Mike - August 4, 2009

Definitely looking forward to District 9 and Avatar. The poster for Avatar looks, unfortunately, very flat. Probably just a combination of the blue and black, but it definitely doesn’t have the same vibe as the other one that was released recently.

14. The Gorn Identity - August 4, 2009

The early positive buzz for G.I. Joe has me pleasantly surprised. For the past two years, throughout this movie’s development, I was sure it was going to tank. Looks like I’ll be wrong. Going to see it Friday.

15. jose ruben rodriguez fuentes - August 4, 2009

Spanish fantastic cinema rocks dying to see REC 2 he he he, hollywwod pay attention to spanish fantastic fim makers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

16. Brett Campbell - August 4, 2009

Glad that the next Narnia film is underway. “Dawn Treader” was my favorite novel in the series.

18. ProperTrekkieUK - August 4, 2009

Great to see Narnia being pushed forward!

I was only playing inFamous yesterday and put my mind to writing a screen play for it, I feel it’ll make a fantastic film! Shame someone beat me to it!

19. J.R.Q - August 4, 2009

The Time Traveler’s Wife isn’t a Sci-Fi movie,if it walk a Duck ,look like a duck. Sci-Fi the retarded child of movies.

20. MC1 Doug - August 4, 2009

Wow. Not much in the news this week. –sigh–

21. Magic_Al - August 4, 2009

I’d rather see Ridley Scott do an alternate sequel to Alien starting with Sigourney Weaver and the cat still in the escape pod. Say she was out there 300 years and it explains how she looks 30 years older in hibernation. Maybe the previous sequels were a dream!

22. They call me Stasiu - August 4, 2009

The Rapunzel art has me looking forward to that film.

23. sean - August 4, 2009

$8-$9 is the standard where I live in the southwest. Matinees are usually $6. Even IMAX tops out a $10.75

24. Will - August 4, 2009

Lol @ the Avatar poster: “From the director of Titanic”… not Terminator, not Terminator 2, not Aliens, not The Abyss……. Titanic.

25. Jeffrey S. Nelson - August 4, 2009

Lefevre expressed her “shuck.” Awwww…shucks…no proofreading and spellcheck again.

26. RD - August 4, 2009

#24 – perhaps because this movie will be nothing like those others. Perhaps because Terminator did poorly this Summer at the box office, and on TV. Perhaps because nobody remembers the Abyss, which did not do that well at the box office. And most importantly, Avatar is ultimately a love story in the vein of TItanic, which is fondly remembered worldwide not to mention the largest box office take in the last 25 years, and the 6th highest grossing domestic film of all time. And finally, I doubt Fox wants to position this film as a sci-fi movie any more than they wanted to market Titanic as a docu-drama. If successful Avatar will pull in people from all walks of life, just like Titanic.

27. Jim Nightshade - August 5, 2009

Good points RD and the same can be said for time travelers wife-downplaying the sci fi and promoting it as more of a love story-kinda like somewhere in time, was that the title, with chris reeve and jane seymour-he kinda just willed himself back in time–
Also anyone know if the cast is the same in dawn treader and if disney is involved like the 1st two? I thought the 2nd one wasnt very big at the box office-i am surprised to see its filming

28. Brett Campbell - August 5, 2009

24 – Could the reason be that “Titanic” earned the most $$$?

29. RD - August 5, 2009

#27, Time Traveler’s wife will likely do better than Somewhere In Time. THe book is much better and despite the similarities to the ill fated NBC series, “Journey Man”, the previews I have seen are definitely aimed at family and romantics. But I doubt seriously it has the same potential of Avatar, Titanic, or even Star Trek. Somewhere in Time did not do that well at the box office either, nor did another fantastic romantic comedy Kate & Leopold. In the end, it will be perceived as much more of a chick-flick than anything else. Whereas Titanic I appreciated it for the drama, I am much more fascinated by the sfx, the sinking, the detail and the underwater footage (otherwise I could never watch it again). I mean there really is something for everyone in that movie and Avatar seems to be targeting a similar broad appeal, like Star Wars meets Titanic.
