Sci-Fi TV Sunday: BSG, Doctor Who, Dollhouse, Heroes, Lost + more October 11, 2009

by Rosario T. Calabria , Filed under: Sci-Fi , trackback

In Sci-Fi TV this week, we’ve got a look at the new Doctor Who logo, plus the latest filming updates (including new set images), news on a potential early premiere for Chuck season three, a time slot change for Heroes, new details on the BSG movie “The Plan” and more, including the latest casting bites, images and videos.

GENRE TV NEWS

Chuck May Return As Early Late October
It’s no secret that NBC has had a fairly weak Fall season thus far, but the bad news may actually turn out to be good news for fans of "Chuck".  Originally expected to premiere in March, 2010 after the Olympics are finished airing, Michael Ausiello of EW is reporting that NBC is considering premiering the show’s third season as early as late October. The early premiere would also increase its chances at receiving an order beyond its initial 13-episode commission from NBC:

As early as late October, my moles tell me. And while it remains unclear whether the little show that could (and has and shall again) would return to its Monday timeslot or find itself a new perch, NBC insiders who’ve seen the first four episodes are calling this season the best yet.

But wait, there’s more. If Chuck does come back sooner rather than later, the chances of NBC ordering additional episodes beyond the 13 it initially commissioned increases dramatically. And they increase further if it performs solidly…

In other news, here are two new casting bites:

New Doctor Who Logo Revealed

In celebration of the 11th doctor, played by Matt Smith, the BBC has redesigned the logo for "Doctor Who".  The new title logo is the series’ 11th such change, and will debut in 2010 for the new show’s fifth season (along with new Doctor Smith and companion Karen Gillan).  Watch the video reveal of the new logo below.

Meanwhile, filming continues on the aforementioned fifth season and here’s a round-up of some of the latest set reports followed by some new set images (additional images/videos are available via the set report links).

There’s also a new trailer for "K9", the Australian-based spinoff series from Park Entertainment described as "a children’s sci-fi/adventure series combining comedy, action and suspense – ‘X File’s’ meets ‘Men in Black’ with a zany dash of ‘Ghostbusters’ ".  Watch the trailer below.

In other news, the show "Blue Peter" is hosting a contest open to children aged 6-12 to design a new control panel for the Tardis: "Doctor Who prides itself on surprising its viewers at every turn, and who better than a child to come up with the latest design of the Tardis console?"  The winning design will be chosen by Matt Smith and will be used in one episode of the show next year.  More details at BBC (via SCI FI Wire) and in the video embedded below:

ABC Won’t Air Lost Footage Until Premiere
Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse have reportedly convinced ABC to not show any footage from the upcoming new season until its series premiere, according to Kristin of E! Online:

I’m hearing from Lost sources that every single shot of the first few episodes are so revealing that the producers have convinced ABC to NOT SHOW A SINGLE FRAME before the new season airs. No promo scenes, no photos, no nada! So you will be completely in the dark, but it is for good reason: The twists they’re planning are so good, you will WANT to be surprised. Trust me. Your mind gonna go kaplewey.

Speaking of Lindelof and Cuse, the two have both joined Twitter.  Check out their accounts and what they have to say at Twitter.com/CarltonCuse and Twitter.com/DamonLindelof, respectively. Rounding out this week’s "Lost" coverage, here are some casting bites and filming updates from over the course of the last week:

Heroes May Be Moving Back to 9PM
The potential early return of "Chuck" may mean that "Heroes" could be getting back its old time slot (Monday’s at 9:00PM).  Meanwhile, NBC has released descriptions for episodes seven and eight:

Oct. 26th – "Strange Attractors" (Episode Seven):

THE HEROES ATTEMPT TO RESCUE THEMSELVES AND OTHERS WITHOUT THE USE OF THEIR POWERS— Matt (Greg Grunberg) goes to extreme measures to extinguish Sylar (Zachary Quinto), who continues to torment him. Elsewhere, HRG. (Jack Coleman) calls in a favor from Tracy (Ali Larter) to save a troubled young boy whose misfortunes resemble her own. While Claire (Hayden Panettiere) and Gretchen (guest star Madeline Zima) are being hazed by their new sorority sisters, they realize pledging might not be their biggest problem. Robert Knepper also stars. Lisa Lackey, Tessa Thompson and Rick Worthy guest stars.

Nov. 2nd – "Once Upon A Time in Texas" (Episode Eight):

HIRO GETS A SECOND CHANCE TO SAVE THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE – JAYMA MAYS RETURNS AS CHARLIE – When Hiro (Masi Oka) travels three years into the past, he has a second chance to save Charlie (guest star Jayma Mays) from the hands of Sylar (Zachary Quinto). However, Samuel’s (Robert Knepper) presence serves to complicate Hiro’s mission even further. Elsewhere, H.R.G.’s (Jack Coleman) past with his Primatech partner (guest star Elizabeth Rohm) is revealed. James Kyson Lee, Hayden Panettiere and Sendhil Ramamurthy also star. Posted on HeroSite.net. Danielle Savre, Sally Champlin and Dawn Olivieri also guest star.

In episode title news, the title for the 12th episode (11th week) is "The Fifth Stage".  Tomorrow night’s episode "Hysterical Blindness" features the kiss between Claire and roommate Gretchen, but there’s more to that angle:

See, Claire starts feeling a little threatened by Gretchen after a series of odd happenstances make it appear like Gretchen is stalking Claire. But is Gretchen really responsible? As it turns out, she might not be, because there’s a third person in the mix who also has her eye on Claire, and that person’s intentions are none-too-good. And maybe, just maybe, that third party is setting up Gretchen as the fall girl.

Who is this wicked woman? You’ll probably be able to sniff out the suspect as soon as you see her, but just in case there’s any doubt, here’s a hint: You hated her guts on another series we love, and you rejoiced mightily when she was written off at the end of the season. Any guesses?

Rounding out the week’s "Heroes" news, The ODI reports that Kavi Ladnier (Mohinder’s ex-girlfriend) will return for an episode this season, while Kristin of E! Online reports on a rumor that a character from the show may be killed off this season or next [SPOILERS--highlight to view]: "I love Mohinder on Heroes, too. However, I’ve heard that the powers that be feel that he may have run his course…and he is a POSSIBLE target for elimination, either this season or next."

SCI FI TV RATINGS

Monday

The Nielsens have not been kind to "Heroes" this season.  Although the show was off just slightly from the week prior (-5% among viewers to 5.46M and -4% among adults 18-49 to a 2.4 rating) both marks represent new series lows.  NBC has been mum in regards to the show’s future, but it’s clear the core audience has abandoned the show and at the very least it’s in danger of cancellation.

Wednesday

After a soft series premiere and a weakened second week, the third episode of ABC’s "Eastwick" fell once again.  The show was off 22% among both viewers (to a series low 5.14M) and adults 18-49 (to a series low 1.8 rating).

Thursday

It was a mixed bag of news on Thursday night, television’s second-most populated night of sci-fi programming.  The CW saw flat performances from its two programs "The Vampire Diaries" (even among viewers with 3.52M and +6% among A18-49 with a 1.7 rating) and "Supernatural" (-5% among viewers with 2.47M and even among A18-49 with a 1.2 rating).

Over on ABC, the promising drama series "FlashForward" failed to stabilize in its third week, falling a disappointing 16% among viewers (to 9.00M) and 19% among adults 18-49 (to a 3.0 rating).  Numbers are still solid, but it really can’t afford to dip any further, especially in the key A18-49 demographic.  Hopefully it stabilizes next week.

Fox’s "Fringe" also turned in yet another disappointing performance, hitting new series lows among both viewers (-3% to 5.83M) and A18-49 (-9% to a 2.1 rating).  And of course this was the episode that featured the highly anticipated return of Leonard Nimoy.  On the plus side, DVR + 7 day numbers from the premiere week show that the series saw an incredible boost when time-shifted viewers were added in.  The premiere episode (September 17th) went from 7.82M to 9.96M viewers (+27%) and from a 3.0 to a 3.9 A18-49 rating (+30%), the second-largest DVR audience (click for complete list) among Broadcast TV Shows for the week ending September 20th.  Given the highly competitive Thursday night landscape, it’s likely the strong DVR performance has held week-to-week and is one area where Fox can find comfort in the show’s ratings.

Friday (Note: All ratings data, with the exception of Friday, are based on the final national numbers.  Friday data is based on preliminary fast affiliate numbers)

CBS dominated Friday with its 8:00-10:00 p.m. pairing of "Ghost Whisperer" (+13% among viewers with 8.60M and +24% among A18-49 with a 2.1 rating) and "Medium" (+6% among viewers with 8.30M and even among A18-49 with a 1.9 rating).

Rounding out the evening, both "Smallville" (The CW) and "Dollhouse" (FOX) were up from their respective week-ago series low performances. "Smallville" grew 3% among viewers to 2.30M and 11% among A18-49 to a 1.0 rating, while "Dollhouse" was up 10% among viewers to 2.25M and 11% among A18-49 to a 1.0 rating.  Despite coming off their series lows, these are still very poor numbers.  It’s not enough of an excuse to say these shows are performing badly solely because they are on Friday night.  It’s not likely that a 1.0 A18-49 rating and less than 3 million viewers will cut it for The CW and FOX when it comes time to make back-nine/renewal decisions.   But you never know, stranger things have happened.

1. Zebonka - October 11, 2009

Uh oh – Heroes is into the lesbian kiss phase. Next thing you know they’ll go to the ‘musical episode’ phase. All shows do this – Buffy, Xena … it’s just how it goes.

2. SupremeDalekOnTheBridge - October 11, 2009

The new Doctor Who logo is pretty poor. The DW TARDIS is the real killer.

SGU was’nt too bad, but some of the characters, especially Greer, are awful.

Elyse Levesque is pretty hot though.

3. Enterprise - October 11, 2009

FlashForward is the only new show I like. Don’t care much for Who, Stargate, etc.

4. Gorn in 60 Seconds - October 11, 2009

Thanks for the new WHO details (”,)

5. JohnnyMoo - October 11, 2009

Shame for Heroes if it does get canceled. I’ve been as annoyed as anybody with its huge drop in quality since the first season, but this year it’s actually starting to get good again.

6. Gorn Captain - October 11, 2009

The music in the K9 trailer sounds familiar! ;)

7. Braxton - October 11, 2009

Oh I love the classic feel to the new DW logo, plus love how its blue and not that sickly orange :)

8. CmdrR - October 11, 2009

K-9 looks kiddirific.

I agree that Heroes is better so far this season, but it’s been a long wait.

SGU had better find its space legs quickly. The 3-hour pilot was pretty grim. Oh, anyone know what Lou Diamond Philips is doing on that show? I honestly thought he died in the first hour, and was quite happy about it.

Can’t wait to see the new Doctor. NICE companion!!!!

9. S. John Ross - October 11, 2009

Love the new WHO logo, getting seriously jazzed for it … what I really look forward to seeing revealed is the new TARDIS interior (of course, that’ll be up to the BBC … it’s a lot easier for them to keep interiors away from prying fan-cams) :)

Also eager to hear what the new version of the classic theme-song will be like. I’m hoping something simpler (not that I have any substantial complaints about the RTD years at all, just looking forward to enjoying all the new changes for what they are).

10. Andy Patterson - October 11, 2009

Gotta admit I really like Venture Bros. Too bad it’s on too late for me to watch most days.

11. richpit - October 11, 2009

I hope Flash Forward and Fringe pick up the numbers soon. I’ll be seriously miffed if either of them gets canceled.

Heroes lost me after season 3. It got too convoluted and ridiculous.

12. Kevin from Akron - October 11, 2009

IMO Stargate Universe needs more shakedown time. It’s rough around the edges, needs some serious rewriting done. Premise is ok, but the shooting just doesn’t seem right.

13. devon - October 11, 2009

Fringe Rocks! hope this goes for a long time to come. Love Walter to death! Can’t wait for “V” to start and the new Dr. Who! Hope Torchwood continues as well! Can’t say I’m very impressed yet with Stargate:Universe, but am hopeful it will gain momentum soon!

14. devon - October 11, 2009

What’s the big delay with Caprica? I am worried that this will die very quickly as it will not quickly cement its relationship to battlestar galactica, if too much time passes?!!
As far as ratings are concerned they need a more accurate system, as I am guilty now of recording on my dvr and watching days or weeks later when it is more convenient for me timewise, but doesn’t mean that I love certain shows any less!!! Actually I love watching back to back episodes for continuity purposes, and feel more satisfied after investing myself in these worlds for greater periods rather than just one-off episodes and having to wait forever to see the next installment!

15. Jeffrey S. Nelson - October 11, 2009

Fringe, Supernatural, Vampire Diaries, and Eastwick are must see TV for me. Getting caught up on the weekends makes it tough to watch anything else.

16. Spockish - October 11, 2009

What has happened to new news on ‘V’. Have they become afraid of free publicity that news leaks provide. But that also revels that news leaks are not non planed information that is learned early is really planed leaks for free publicity. It’s far cheaper than buying ad time.

17. Your Friendly Neighborhood Mobile Emitter - October 11, 2009

@Zebonka:

The difference with “Heroes” and “Buffy” is that “Buffy” was actually still GOOD in its 6th season. I abandoned Heroes at least two seasons ago. Even a musical episode doesn’t seem to be able to save that show now, if such an episode even fit in with the series (which I don’t believe it does).

18. Chris M - October 11, 2009

Loving the new Doctor Who logo! :)

19. Tj Trek - October 11, 2009

Never could get into Doctor Who at all. I am liking the looks of flash forward, but may have to wait for a DVD release.

20. Alfonso - October 11, 2009

Is it me or are most of these shows pretty lame. I only click on the sci-fi TV titles if I see BSG out of habbit… Then I realize that show is over for all intents an purposes. I was diappointed to see that SGU appears to be a rehash/combo of BSG and Atlantis btw, but we’ll see.

Are there no more really good and original ideas out there that are feasible for TV? Where is the modern day equivalent of 60’s Trek???

21. 790 - October 11, 2009

Doctor Who Rocks!

22. Mel - October 12, 2009

Stargate Universe is a disappointment.

23. Alf, in pog form - October 12, 2009

The only episode of Heroes that I will ever tune into again is one where the whole cast gets killed. Only problem is that they would all be miraculously resurrected in the next weeks show…..

24. allister gourlay - October 12, 2009

Brilliant……….. I am in the UK and get the message you cant view the new DR WHO logo reveal clip in your country!

26. Dom - October 12, 2009

Very much looking forward to Caprica. Awful voiceover on the trailer, though.

Like the new Doctor Who logo. Seems as if there’s some move to draw those of us who disliked Russell T Davies version back into the fold by returning to some of the old show’s iconography, such as the logo, the Hartnell-style TARDIS shell and so on. Hopefully the console room will get back to looking like it should too!

Then again the writing is what it’ll stand or fall on!

27. ProperTrekkieUK - October 12, 2009

I love Dr Who and was a little worried about the new path of it under Moffatt, but now I see its just a massive injection of classic Who into the new series! Fantastic!!! Love the reveal video…love the pictures for the up and coming specials and next series! Cant wait!

On another note, I was actually impressed with Stargate Universe, it just needs some time to find its legs!

28. AJ - October 12, 2009

DVR numbers are going to be quite critical in the US for some markets as the MLB playoffs and World Series compete for prime time viewers. The Yankees and the Angels & Dodgers serve massive population centers, so lots of core viewers will be pre-occupied during the next couple of weeks.

29. Simon - October 12, 2009

#20 – “Habbit”? Is that something rabbit nuns wear?

Beware bad spelling habits!

Back on topic: looks like a lot of these shows won’t be on next season. And “every single shot” of LOST giving something away? Give me a break!

30. Donn - October 12, 2009

Chuck +++
Doctor Who +++

Great news on Chuck potentially coming back sooner!

31. Spockish - October 12, 2009

To: 790,

Lexx use to rock also but today whom remembers the Showtime Canadian series. And I still have the 4 Season DVD set. It’s only my backup copies, someone pocketed the box set. But that was 20th century stuff.

And I use to have the Wide screen shows via Sci-Fi on S-VHS but someone put the stack tapes in the window, came home and found them melted and warped. Why did they never make DVD’s of the wide screens. Side note Season one (the Showtime movies are wide screen with the movie black bars).

Since they are doing remakes of old Sci-Fi shows, will they ever dig up LEXX, they were big on doing Blue Screen back when it was converting into Green Screen’s.

And 790 have you refreshed your small little part of human brain lately, my advice pick wisely whom you get the brain cells from. If you pick wrong you’ll become a 791, even thoe you’re a reject also.

32. Dr. Image - October 12, 2009

Well I like SG-U. Mainly because it’s NOT like the previous shows, which I could never get into.
SG-U is shaping up like Voyager done right, and that’s a good thing.
I gave up on Dollhouse and Fringe.
I fear for the new direction of Dr. Who- this could be a disaster.

33. Olley Olley Olley - October 12, 2009

lol @ the Dr who fans & their level of worry
me thinks they watch too muh Fox News..

maybe we should go back to having a fat fugg with an equity card wearing an obscene multi-coloured coat in the lead role!

34. S. John Ross - October 13, 2009

#33:

Quite a lot of us Doctor Who fans are expressing no worry at all … The show doth rockest, and will rockest yet more, verily.

35. William - October 13, 2009

is the syfy channel still showing Doctor Who in the states or do we have to watch BBC America.

36. Topaz172 - October 14, 2009

Judging by the Police Uniform in the Dr Who pictures… the Tardis has landed in the Star Trek TOS timeline
