#23:
I'd say the Nexus is a good idea. The concept is great, the implications complex, and it could easily carry a film.
However Generations, for some reason, decided to basically ignore all the great possibilities that the Nexus provided them with and basically turn it into a thoroughly forgettable plot device. Let's face it: Generations isn't really about the Nexus. It's about Soran, who is ultimately just an excuse to get Picard and Kirk on screen at the same time.
Think of how much more interesting it might have been if, for example, instead of having some convoluted plot about Soran blowing up planets to sort through, the Enterprise-D had been swallowed by the Nexus. Trapped in a world literally shaped by the desires and wills of those inside it, seemingly dedicated to providing everyone with everything they'd wanted in life, how would they get out? Would they even want to? How could they ever be sure that they had? Then, inside the Nexus, you've got people like Kirk, trapped in this timeless "perfection" for centuries and having grown jaded with it, realizing that without struggle, life is ultimately hollow and meaningless. For them, the Enterprise might represent a chance to escape, provided they can get to it before it's destroyed by the Nexus. You could even throw in the obligatory Enterprise destruction at the end, with the ship so badly damaged in its escape that it needs to be scrapped. Maybe even have Kirk make some grand sacrifice and go down with the ship, harkening back to the Original's destruction in the third movie.

"Story: Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman"

Was Narada + VGER part of the movie's original script or is this idea merely an embellishment on the part of the Nero comics writers? If there were a deleted scene referencing this episode on the upcoming DVD that would be fascinating – but it doesn't sound like it. I wonder what the in-movie rationale was in terms of Nero figuring out when and where Spock would appear from he future....

I loved Countdown and up until this issue, I've loved the Nero series... but in this issue it jumped the shark. Not because VGER is in it.. but because of how contrived it all seems. I mean, the probe coming to the Narada, the exact images inside the ship that Spock saw.. VGER 'mindmelding' with Nero... and, Despite the alien's power, the crew was in no real danger, and it felt like there was no real purpose to bringing them there. The whole thing doesn't make sense, even in such a contrived, scifi story.

Pretty easy to see it for what it as.. an excuse to use familar elements, without making VGER look / seem more fascinating or complex. I was pretty dissapointed at this simple trip down memory lane, and could have just watched the STTMP DVD for that.

RE: Shatner
Some websites are running shatner headlines, but there is no new news, they are just taking quotes from the press conference held a couple of weeks ago, which we already reported on:
http://trekmovie.com/2009/10/08/jj-abrams-talks-star-trek-sequel-shatner-nimoy-nick-meyer-more/

...and in fact, I was the one who asked the Shatner question (just fo you'all, cause who doesn't love another go around the 'will shatner be in it' merrygoround)

What does Scotty's theory from over 100 years of technological advancement have to do with it? Both Gary 7 and the movie establish that it is possible, once figured out.

I'd imagine the following:

- Scotty, younger, figures out that it must be possible (2258). Why not?
- By the time of TOS (2266), has been trying to work it out for a while, and figures it's impossible with current technology.
- Gary Seven beams in, and Triskellion happens, making it obvious that it IS possible.
- Scotty starts working in the TNG timeline (after Relics), and figures it out not long before Spock goes to Romulus, though doesn't get to try it out, but shares it with Spock in passing.
- Spock goes back in time, the movie happens etc., and we know the rest.

That is one very plausible explanation for all of Scotty's reactions, including surprise.

Now, why is it so implausible again?

OneBuck, I didn't forget about Gary 7. What does an alien race that is far advanced of the federation have to do with it? Obviously, I must have also conveniently forgot the Gamesters of Triskelion. Scotty didn't seem to be too convinced that someone could be transported over 12 lights ways in that situation either.
