Cool! I would love to see the movie in 2011, although I am starting to warm up to the 2012 idea too.

As for casting and characters, I have hopes that Commodore Robert Wesley might have a place in this movie. In all honesty, I think Bill Murray would be great to portray that character. He is actually really good in a serious role, and I would love to see him in the Captain’s chair.

Tom Cruise as a reimagined Gary Mitchell I could buy. Gary always did seem a bit older in the manner in which Lockwood portrayed him… He might have been a civilian spacer who joined Starfleet later in life. But I don’t think that would work with Chris Pine’s Kirk, unless they’re jumping ahead a few years or something.

Bob Justman writes in the Inside Star Trek book that William Shatner wore lifts to reach his advertised height of 5ft11. He was no taller than 5ft9 or even 5ft8.
Yes. As Brad said those boots were quite big on Star Trek. In a lot of episodes Shatner actually wore bigger heels than some other actors (like Ricardo Montalban) to make him look taller. Also, most of his female co-stars in the show wore ballet slippers or flat sandals. High heels were forbidden for Captain Kirk’s love interests. Shatner was desperately trying to look at least 5ft11 in those days.

Over the years I’ve met Shatner a few times. He would appear to be around 5′10″ and I don’t think there were “lifts” involved.

Tom Cruise maybe 5′7″ or so, but William Shatner, who I think was a good character in Star Trek :o) , is from what I’ve read only a couple inches taller at around 5′9″. Now Chris Pine might be closer to 6′ and Mr. Cruise would have to be filmed carefully to not look ridiculous in any fight scene as Khan.
Anyway, in Star Trek 2, The Wrath of Khan, Kirk and Khan where never filmed in the same scene next to each other. They spoke via view screens, etc.
It was just a fun thought to have a huge name like Cruise with lots of overseas cash for the Star Trek franchise with him being in the next movie. He’d do it for JJ I think.
