Technically, it isn’t atheism – which is a form of theology – as much as an avoidance of theological discussion completely. Secular humanists don’t make any claim about the supernatural. They simply don’t believe anyone should conduct themselves differently either way.

While certain humans need god(s) to tell them that playing with fire might lead to death, others use deductive reasoning to come to the same conclusion. If an idea is rational, scientific, or logical, secular humanists believe we’ll eventually find some sort of common ground. Religion is, therefore, unnecessary. As humans can function just fine without being controlled by fear of divine retribution.

However, at least as far as I know, Roddenberry never went beyond this. He never claimed religion was inherently “evil” or “bad.” Only that you can live a perfectly happy and productive life without it.

This makes Gene quite different from, say, Christopher Hitchens.
