@ MikeP - I can soooorta see where you're coming from; I've done my share of buying and selling collectibles and yeah, sometimes you get a profit, sometimes you don't. I've always worked in double digits, though. I guess, from a finanical perspective, it comes down to a personal opinion - I just don't see buying a $500 collectible with the hope that, possibly, it'll increase in value to $800, as a viable way to spend money with the hopes of getting money.

I certainly don't see buying one for its nostalgia value as ANY sort of sound investment. There are enough Playmates and Art Asylum toys out there (not to mention AMT/Ertl kits) that anybody with a little (read: double digits) scratch, some attention to detail and some time could clean up a tricorder to look like these hundred-dollar deals.

Again, I understand that that's a personal opinion. The prices are just mind-boggling. I like Star Trek, but I don't like Star Trek enough to drop multiple hundreds of dollars on it in one pop.

If I was rich, I'd buy it just to blow it up... and hopefully, Khan & Klang(?) will do so in the next movie anyway. ;-) To each his own but that is one funked up Enterprise.

@51 BenPrince

I think that the studios know that there is money to be made here and there are people who will spend it. That being said there are different pricing points available via outfits from Rubies, and the TOS landing party set can be had for less than $100 from Diamond Select and it is great.

I've bought a couple of items from Its a Wrap and paid $800 to $1200 with the idea that they are an investment. Sure the economy is tough for some right now but when it turns around you can sell them for a profit in the right circles. They probably hold their value, in the collector community, better than many peoples financial investment portfolios or real estate in the last year or two.

Uh, yeah, that's what I said.

The original design concept was beautiful, and revoulutionary for it's time. A saucer section. A secondary hull. Two warp nacelles.

The new E has a thicker, beefier saucer. A more dramatic secondary hull. And beefier nacelles that reflect their power. Same basic (beautiful)design, but less dated, less wimpy. Why is that hard to understand?

Compare the new E to the butt-fugly TNG era E's. Which says to you that "this is the Starship Enterprise"?

"She’s a beauty for sure! A very good update on a dated wimpy 60’s design, while staying true to the creative and beautiful aspects of that design."

So is it dated and wimpy or creative and beautiful?

You are seriously arguing that only the good "aspects" of the original are what we see in the new model?

Actually, if you know your history, the TMP Enterprise is evocative of art deco (particularly the Aztec pattern and nacelle designs) which goes in an out of fashion. Jeffries' original design for the TV Enterprise looked remarkably similar to the motion picture version, ironically--the constraint there was pure budget (making a non cylindrical hull was hard, the more convex the harder it was--that's why the Enterprise-C had a round engineering section rather than one similar to the -D.)

The Enterprise-E only looks "modern" because it's the product of a move towards a sleek "modern" view of the future. They *were* "designed yesterday", in practical terms. I'm not saying either is a bad ship design, I'm just saying you're being unduly influenced by cultural tastes that will change.

What absolutely amazes me is anyone that's willing to pay these prices. $200? $500? A grand? I know that a common argument between fans is that, if it's so-and-so's money, then so-and-so can spend it however they want, but...seriously - do any of you REALLY drop half a grand (i.e., one month's worth of groceries, or a monthly car payment, or your kid's college book bill for one semester) on Star Trek replicas? Can you do it without blinking an eye?

@ Brian Kirsch:

Well I like all of them, but if I had to point one: The JJ-E

The Enterprise-D was majestic and the E-E was just bad@ss. Both are my favorite TREK designs, since they are timeless.
Take a look at the TOS-E and the TMP-E. They scream 60ies and 80ies respectivley.

Look at the Galaxy and the Sovereign-Classes... they could have been designed yesterday.
