Hat Rick, at last we agree on something – let's not award the prize before the race is run. But, the early reviews of Avatar are undeniable. It already sports a 92% positive review on Rotten Tomatoes from 13 respected critics (with only one negative), and has only been seen by a relatively small handful of critics at last night's premiere in the UK. If the trend continues, it may well surpass Star Trek's own high critical praise.

But, the most important thing about Avatar's reviews is what they are saying: they use words like "visually stunning", lavishly praising the story, the writing, cinematography, the acting, the design, the technical details, the music, and the highest praise of all comes from The Hollywood Reporter (a sure hint at how the Oscar community will perceive this film): They ask of the Oscar winning director: "How will Cameron ever top this"? These are Oscar reviews. Star Trek's reviews were enthusiastic, but nothing like these.

Even if Avatar doesn't live up to its hype, with this kind of hype it is almost a certainty that it will overshadow Star Trek for Oscar consideration. Personally, I see it as a stretch that more than one Sci-Fi film would be nominated by the academy considering all the other oscar deserving films out there, which most of the people who post on this website are unlikely to ever see.

In direct response to your post, I see NBR nominations being announced before all the films of 2009 were released, equally as unfairly stacking the deck in favor of Star Trek. Therefore, we should all be happy that Star Trek has gotten the buzz it has. What is it they say, it was an honor just to be nominated? Considering where Star Trek has come from, I say it is an honor just to be talked about being nominated. ;-)

Gene Barry died Wednesday at the age of 90. Barry is best remembered by genre fans as Dr. Clayton Forrester in George Pal's 1953 classic 'War of the Worlds.'

Steven Spielberg featured both Barry and Ann Robinson, the two lead actors of the 1953 film, in a bit part of the 2005 remake.

He was a classy actor and will be missed.

RIP Gene Barry

Also, I'm not generally in favor of giving Oscars to movies (Avatar) that haven't even been released yet. Especially since it would mean one less nomination slot for Trek.

I mean, seriously -- how about not stacking the BP deck against Trek, for once?

I really don't think we need any more "Spider-Man" movies. The first two were great, but the third sucks. The fact that they are planning on making at least 3 more with the same cast smacks of cynical money-grabbing. Sure, the same could be said of other movie franchises, but I'm not sure Sam Raimi should be at the helm anymore. And apparently, Sony thought it was a good idea to make a "Venom" movie on the heels of Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker in "The Dark Knight". Never mind that Venom as portrayed by Topher Grace in "Spider-Man 3" was a major reason why that movie blows.

As for "Avatar", I still think it will be a great movie. But I have to see it before I know. On the other hand, a lot of people have already made up their minds about it with negative opinions without seeing it first. I get the feeling a lot of people are hoping the movie bombs. Perhaps some people have never forgiven James Cameron for "Titanic". And perhaps since the majority of Cameron's films have been critically acclaimed and a proven moneymaker, as well as the fact that "Avatar" is the most expensive movie ever produced, people have become cynical for some reason and would gladly see this movie bomb.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhh...

Tron?
Really?
'Least Bridges will get ta' go through tha' Ponce De Leon CGI youth regenerator.

And Spidery-Man wit' tha' Vulture would be grand- nothin' like beatin' up an elderly, senile coot wit' a hump.
But tha' Black Cat not bein' tha' Black Cat? Oh, come ons!

Nothin' new under' tha' sun...

Though I kinda' like tha' Wolfman movie trailers and...
Iron Man tha' Second

Iron Man
Iron Man
Does whatever an iron can
Gets out wrinkles
Creases your pants
Starts a fire
Squashes ants
Loooooook ooooout!
Here comes tha' Irony Man!

And it be Kwai Chang Caines askin' fur' quarters fur' me steam pressin'!
Uh, oh- "Ancient Chinese Secret- Tha' Motion Picture!" In theatres next summer! Wit' a long, loving look at his gold robe.

(bunch o' king fu blokes gunna' kick me arse a bit now)
