Spidey 4 Scrapped; Sony Rebooting Franchise In Summer 2012 With New Cast and Crew
We open this week’s Sci-Fi Movies column with one of the week’s biggest surprises.  Sony Pictures has announced that they have canceled "Spider-Man 4" and will instead move forward on a franchise reboot to be released in the summer of 2012.  Director Sam Raimi, who reportedly had concerns with the shape of and content of the various versions of the script, won’t return for the new film.  And neither will star Tobey Macguire and the rest of the cast and crew. So what do we know about this reboot?  Well, first off it’s based on a script written by James Vanderbilt that will, according to EW, "place Peter Parker in a more contemporary setting, as a teenager battling today’s issues".  Here’s more background on how we got to the current situation:

The decision to go with an origin story stemmed from Sony developing two Spidey projects simultaneously. According to studio insiders, Sony was working on both Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 and the new origin story from James Vanderbilt, who wrote Zodiac. The original plan was to keep the Spider-Man gang together for one last film in 2011 before rebooting the series in 2012. When it became clear that Raimi would not be able to make the summer 2011 release date planned for Spider-Man 4, the studio opted to scrap Spider-Man 4 altogether, and focus solely on the series reboot.

EW goes on to describe the project as "a more gritty" take on the series.  They also throw out some possible directors: Marc Webb ("(500) Days of Summer"), Michael Bay ("Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen") and "Seabiscuit" director Gary Ross who worked on one of the drafts of "Spider-Man 4". You can read Sony’s press release here.  Check out a clip with Willem Dafoe talking about the possibility of reprising his role as the Green Goblin in the new reboot:

Green Lantern Gets Green Light; Blake Lively Cast As Female Lead; Peter Sarsgaard As Main Villain
Last Wednesday Warner Brothers gave an official green light to "Green Lantern".  The film is scheduled to begin shooting in 10 weeks (somewhere near the middle of March).  The studio has also tapped Blake Lively ("Gossip Girl") to play the female lead opposite Ryan Reynolds.  Lively will play the character Carol Ferris:

"[W]ho runs her father’s aerospace company and hires cocky test pilot Hal Jordan (Reynolds), who later becomes the intergalactic policeman Green Lantern. In the comics, the romance became complicated when an alien race bestowed her the power of a crystal called the Star Sapphire."

Lively was one of five actresses reported to be in contention for the role by Latino Review last month.  With two of the main leads cast, attention will now shift to the roles of Dr. Hector Hammond (one of the key villains in the film) and Sinestro.  And the studio may have found their Dr. Hammond.  THR is reporting that Peter Sarsgaard is in talks to play the character, described as "the pathologist son of a senator who is seen as a disappointment in his father’s eyes.  He becomes infused with psychic powers when he discovers a meteor.  "Green Lantern" is scheduled for release on June 17, 2011.

Zombieland Writers Hired To Pen X-Men Origins: Deadpool AND G.I. Joe Sequel
The trades have confirmed CHUD‘s December scoop that Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick ("Zombieland") have been tapped by 20th Century Fox to write the upcoming "X-Men Origins: Deadpool".  In the film, Ryan Reynolds will reprise his role as Wade Wilson/Deadpool, whom he played in last summer’s "X-Men Origins: Wolverine".  The film won’t begin production until after Reynolds wraps work on "Green Lantern".  But that’s not all for the "Zombieland" writers.  IESB and Collider are reporting that the duo have also been tapped to take on the sequel to Paramount Pictures’ "G.I. Joe", which has been given an official go-ahead by the studio.  There are no additional details about the project, and it’s unclear if "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" director Stephen Sommers will return to direct the sequel.

Pirates 4 Set for May 20, 2011 + Wolverine 2 Eyeing Summer 2012
Taking advantage of Sony’s delay and then shuttering of "Spider-Man 4", Walt Disney Pictures has set "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" for release on May 20, 2011‘On Stranger Tides’ executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that the film will begin production this June and that star Johnny Depp is still on board the project, despite rumors to the contrary last year:

"Yeah, everything’s fine," Bruckheimer told reporters. "We’re moving forward. We hope to start in June, and Rob Marshall’s set. We’re moving forward."

As reported previously, the fourth film is based on the Tim Powers novel "On Stranger Tides" and Bruckheimer says it will pick up where ‘At World’s End’ left off: "I think it kind of takes off from the end of 3, where he’s got that map to the fountain of youth," Bruckheimer said. "That’s where the story starts. That was the inspiration." With regards to the other principal cast members Bruckeheimer said only Depp has a contract in place: "We’ll make those decisions later and let you know."  In other release date news (also reported here on TrekMovie), "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" star Hugh Jackman revealed on a red-carpet interview at the People’s Choice Awards — where he won for Favorite Action Star — that they’re shooting for a summer 2012 release date for the follow-up:

"Wolverine’s going to be back. He’s going to Japan. We shoot that probably in a year, year-and-a-half, something like that."

Writer: Thor Will Remain Recognizable To Comic Book Fans
Ashley Miller, one of the screenwriters for Kenneth Branagh’s "Thor", chatted with Alpha Waves Radio about the film, and said that it will remain recognizable to fans of the comic, even with some "adjustments" [via MTV]:

"It’s about as close as you can reasonably expect it to be [to the comic book],” Miller said during a recent appearance on Alpha Waves Radio. "Obviously, you have to make some adjustments, and you have to compress some things simply for the sake of being able to get a lot of information out and being able to create a believable fantasy world that intersects with ours."

"Look at ‘Batman Begins’ for example," continued Miller. "It does actually play fast and loose with the history of the character, but at the same time, it brings in real cool elements from different interpretations of the character and puts them all together in cool ways."

"I want people who love the character as much as I do to love this character in this movie,” added Miller. “And I want people who have never been exposed to this character to love him, too, and understand why I love him. And that’s all that matters."

Principal photography on "Thor" is set to begin this week.  Paramount Pictures recently pushed up the release of the film from May 20, 2011 to May 6, 2011. Two casting bites for the film follow below.

  • Stuart Townsend has been dropped from Kenneth Branagh’s "Thor" over "creative differences" just a week away from its scheduled shoot date.  He was set to play Fandral, one of the Warriors Three.  His role has been recast with Joshua Dallas. Townsend famously was dropped from the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy shortly before that began shooting (he was cast as Aragorn, a role that ultimately went to Viggo Mortensen). [THR]
  • …On the flip side, Adriana Barraza is in negotiations with the studio to join the cast of the film as one of the humans. [THR’s Heat Vision Blog]

Darren Aronofsky Says No to Robocop In 3D
MGM’s reboot of "Robocop" is reportedly on hold. According to Moviehole, the problem rests with the studio’s desire to shoot the film in 3D.  Given the huge success of "Avatar" and increased use of 3D technology in other current and upcoming projects, MGM’s wish to shoot the film in 3D isn’t all that surprising.  However, the director, Darren Aronofsky, is someone who likes to shoot with natural elements and views 3D as more a gimmick than a necessity:

‘Nash’ from the OCP-lovin’ RoboCop Archive dropped me a line earlier today, stating that "I’ve spoken with Phoenix Pictures [and] asked them about the status of ROBOCOP… they told me that the project is on hold. The problem is that Mary Parent, Chairperson of MGM, wants a 3D movie for the new ROBOCOP. But ,as you know, Darren Aronofsky is a real artist and he’s not interested in Gimmicks like,3D,CGI,Filming digital, he wants to do everything as real (organic) as possible just like The Fountain."

Ghost Rider Sequel Tentatively Titled Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance
"Ghost Rider"
producer Michael De Luca told Collider that they’ve settled on a tentative title for the proposed sequel to the 20th Century Fox film: "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance".  As previously reported, the script is based on a 2001 treatment from David Goyer (who recently delivered an updated outline to the studio):

"We have an outline that David wrote that kind of adapts his 2001 script into today’s times with incorporating kind of an original idea of Nic’s [star Nicolas Cage]."

In addition to the working title, De Luca also revealed that Mark Steven Johnson will not be returning to direct and said that Goyer could possibly get behind the directing chair (perhaps shooting in/for 3D).  Additionally, Eva Mendes will not be returning to portray Roxanne Simpson and De Luca says they’re shooting for a hard PG-13 rating.  Check out the complete interview at Collider.

District 9 Follow-Up Could Be A Prequel
Neill Blomkamp may follow-up his 2008 sci-fi hit "District 9′ with a prequel instead:

"I know what I’m doing next so it wouldn’t be right away. But the concept of aliens in Johannesburg is such an appealing idea to me and the issues of race and how they meet. All of the things that I had going on with it. I wouldn’t mind messing around with it again. I’m open to it if the story works and there’s a reason to do it. And [Sharlto Copley’s character] Wikus is so funny to me, I’m very interested in a sort of passive racist like that. If you go forward [with his story beyond "District 9"] it’s more of a traditional film but if you go backward I’d be intrigued in that. I’m not so interested in aliens coming back and blowing things up but [a prequel] might be interesting."

And just what is he "doing next" before he revisits "District 9"? Another sci-fi feature, but this one set 150 years in the future:

"The setting for the next film takes place 150 years from now. There are two cities that I’m choosing between. They would play as themselves. They are not in South Africa. The success of "District 9" has made things a lot easier. I can get other things made. The thing I won’t forget though is that you’re really only as good as your last film. The whole flavor-the-week thing — that’s how Hollywood works. If I screw up the next one it will be like I never made "District 9." I’m totally aware of that. It can all disappear in 30 seconds."

Robert Downey Jr. Drops Out of Cowboys & Aliens Due to Scheduling Conflicts
"Cowboys & Aliens"
will have to go forward without Robert Downey Jr.  EW is reporting that the actor has opted to instead star in a sequel to this summer’s "Sherlock Holmes".  Warner Brothers hasn’t given an official green light to the "Sherlock Holmes" sequel but they are expected to — especially with worldwide numbers already nearing $300 million — and when they do, it would gear up for production this June.  Which is the exact time that "Cowboys & Aliens" is scheduled to begin principal photography.  Even before its release, Warner Brothers envisioned "Sherlock Holmes" as a potential new franchise, which is why they commissioned a script by Kieran and Michele Mulroney last September.  So what happens with "Cowboys & Aliens"?  Well, DreamWorks remains committed to the project and have begun looking for a new lead with a summer 2011 release date still in their sights.

Avatar 1st Place For 4th Weekend In A Row + Awards Recap and Sequel Talk
"Avatar"
grossed a record $50.3 million in its fourth weekend, crushing the previous weekend no. 4 mark set by 1997’s "Titanic" ($28.5M).  Through today (Tuesday), "Avatar" has grossed nearly $436 million domestically.  It’s currently #5 on the all-time domestic list, passing "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace" and "E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial" on Monday.  "Avatar" has grossed over $910.8 million overseas for a worldwide cume of $1.35 billion (#2 all-time). When all is said and done, "Avatar" could end up passing both the domestic and worldwide records of "Titanic" ($600.8 million and $1.84 billion, respectively).  On the Awards front, in the past week "Avatar" has received nominations from the Directors Guild of America, Producers Guild of America, Writers Guild of America, American Cincema Editors and the American Cinematographers Society.  Also, as reported earlier, Star Trek’s Uhura, Zoe Saldana, was nominated for an NAACP Image award for her work as the character Neytiri. And rounding down this week’s "Avatar" news, director James Cameron offered just a bit more information about where he might go with any potential sequels:

“There’s more to the Alpha Centauri system than just Pandora,” he says. “There are other moons that are boats for life. And there are stories that eventually spread out into other parts of the solar system.”

And lastly, for those interested, the movie’s deleted sex scene between Neytiri and Jake is online (it’s in the script which 20th Century Fox posted online).  Movieline has excerpted the relevant part of the scene at their site.

  • …Bruckheimer also revealed that "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" is nearly complete: "We’ve got about maybe 15 visual-effects shots and some music that we’re still doing, but it’s very close," and that the run-time is "under two hours", athough he maintains the film still has an "epic" feel. Gawd, I hope they get Thor right!

I don’t know if a Robocop Re-make would have worked anyway.

It sounds like Sony pulled the rug out from under the feet of Sam Raimi. In other words, they got greedy. I hope “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” breaks the video game-to-movie curse. It looks pretty good based on the previews I saw at the theatre. Stuart Townsend dropped from “Thor”. And he was also dropped from “The Lord of The Rings”.
Does anyone know why? Is it because he’s a jerk? Asking for too much money? Incompetence? It seems like he doesn’t learn from his mistakes too well.

they should definitely bring back the Planet of the Apes series !

Ugh … another Spider-Man origin movie …

*sigh* Still no news for the proposed Spielberg remake of ‘When Worlds Collide.’

I’ve no desire to see a new Robocop…

#5 I bet the “Spider Man” reboot will end up as a cynical straight to dvd movie instead of a cynical theatrical release. By the way, Sony has changed the font for the Playstion 3 from the one they used for the “Spider Man” films. Although it was kinda dumb to lump the two together in the first place.

An old joke:

Thor, God of Thunder, is out partying in a village on Earth. After getting drunk on ale he takes a saucy young wench (with a distinct lisp) to his bed. They have a very good time together. The next morning the God of Thunder gets up from the bed and, going to the window, shouts down to the street, “I AM MIGHTY THOR!” The young girl sits up in bed, rubs her lap gently, and says, “I’m feeling pretty thore mythelf!”

Ba-dum-bum!

#8 Which day was that Thursday or THORsday?

Thank you for keeping me abreast of The Hobbit! Who would have thought a Trek site would be my one-stop-shop for all things Middle-earth and 23rd-4th centuries?

Wait … Wolverine sequel … WHY?!

A spiderman origins story, now that is dumb.

Even if they go with a new world just assume it all exist already rather than retell a story we already know.

Though rebooting is a bad idea. If Sony had not screwed with the storyline in the last film is would have been good too.

The current series under Sam Raimi needs no makeover just good scripts.

#11 Wolverine is cool. I liked the movie, but the script was clearly lacking. Hopefully it gets rectified in the sequel.

#12

Chris, I think the obvious reason they want to start over with Peter Parker in high school is to appeal to the 12-16 year-old movie-going audience. Typical stupid Hollywood decision. Why raise the bar when it’s so much easier to lower it?

#14 That’s why its going straight to dvd. In the bargain bins. So that 12 year olds can afford to see it. :-)

Im not sure how they could do Thor–imagining how they could come close to the epic visuals drawn by jack king kirby–the shakespearean speeches-norse gods and godesses epic battles–loki thors evil half bro–magic–if done right hopefully an epic tribute to kirby-just the costumes worn by the characters were so original–hmm kinda lord of the rings sounding huh –hope we git to see it before Ragnorak!

TrekMovie is by far the best source of movie news ever!!!

@ Zebonka: Because WOLVERINE rocks… That’s why. *rolleyes*

Although I do feel it’s too early to do a reboot of Spider-Man (just like it’s too early to redo BSG *again*), I do think there could be potential awesome in the idea. Such as Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin.

On the other hand, it probably would be far too easy and riffing off the first movie to have it be a reboot, an origin story, *and* have the Green Goblin as the villain. Hmmm… maybe the second film *if* it turns out good (sort of like the Joker in TDK)?

Looks like Sony has learned an important lesson from the success of Dark Knight… I don’t know what that could possibly be, and I don’t think that it will show at all in this new Spiderman Re-Boot. IMO Spiderman 2 was just about as perfect as a comic book movie can get – too bad they never gave Raimi freedom after that point.

I’m looking forward to Green Lantern. He was my favorite superhero in my childhood and… it’s not a reboot and not a se/prequel. Wonderful!

re Planet of the Apes.

id like them to go back to the version Oliver Stone was going to make with Arnie (before Burtons reimagining) – that humans are dying out in the present day due to some dormant genetic thing…so Arnie gets sent back in time to pre history to find out what the problem is and finds humans at war with apes

Is Scott Pilgrim v. The World directed by JJ Abrams? “Nice Flare!”

Am I the only one looking forward to a Robocop remake?

@9. ryanhuyton
“Which day was that Thursday or THORsday?”

Ummmm.. Actually, Thursday IS “Thorsday”
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday = Wodin, Thor, Freya

“place Peter Parker in a more contemporary setting, as a teenager battling today’s issues”

So… the recent Spiderman films took place in what? The 1800’s?

Anthony — it must be a lot of work to put such a detailed post together each week but I really enjoy all the information, and I know others do as well. many thanks for continuing to make trekMovie such a “go-to” site

it is very appreciated.

is the actor who played George Kirk still the star of “Thor?” Thought he was excellent.

#8 Harry, its “Your Thor!….I’m tho thor I can hardly walk”.

Robocop remade could be interesting… if the first section of the film were standard film (no 3D), set in present day… the story of a beat cop, straight arrow…. with an act about similar to ST’09’s Kelvin sequence. And at the end of it, like Robau or G. Kirk, the protagonist dies. Then, we put on our 3D glasses, as the protagonist awakens 200 years later, reanimated as ROBOCOP. We get a first-person tries-to-overwrite-the-programmed-to-shooter movie in 3D the rest of the way. That would be shocking, and a rationale for doing Robocop in 3D.

Spider-Boy. Spider-Babies. Spiderville. The Secret Life of the American Spider-Teen. Sony just killed their franchise. Which is fine!

Marvel can retake the rights then, and bring back Tobey Maguire as an older Spider-Man, and continue the threads begun in S-M 1, 2 and 3.

What was wrong with the first Spidey movie’s origin story?? I mean to go back to the beginning again, it would seem that the well has run dry. I don’t understand why the pressure to make movies with less story, and more villians is so important to studios. I mean, Spidey with three villians will make $75 million opening week, then fall off 70-80% within the next two weeks after that.
Look at Avatar. Good Story, great effects and the movies on track to do over $500 million domestically and has made over $1Billion already. I think the studios need to understand that if they make good movies, with a good story as well as effects and acting, people will come.

So since Spider man is rebooting? LOL when will we get the new Star Trek Reboot lol. Its been a year *sigh* its time LMFAO.

The frustrating thing is that these studios are spending mega-millions on putting out utter crap. (Transformers 2, Spider-man 3, etc.)
Avatar? Brilliant technology with a really disappointing, simplistic, unoriginal, and predictable plot. Is it making money? Hell yes, because peoples’ expectations have been steadily dropping on the front that really counts- good writing.
Seriously, your average Dr. Who episode has more going for it than most swill that we’re seeing in theaters these days.

“Planet of the Apes” is dead. Tim Burton killed it.

I hope that Planet of the Apes reboot gets rebooted. I thought Tim Burton’s reboot had a couple of interesting moments but this franchise deserves a proper reboot. Did I say reboot? I meant re-boot.

It’s definitely time to reboot the 2012 franchise. There have been so many advances in technology in the last three months, (smiles)

I appreciate those who compliment these articles, but remember it is Rosario who puts them together so he deserves the credit. You can get even more up to date on his site

Michael Bay as a possible director for Spider-Man?!

(Disoriented Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader stumbles clumsily from the operating table……)

NNNNNNOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!

#29

Correcting one of my jokes!!?? Lore, I keel yu!! Where my butcher knife!!?? :>)

Maybe Ron D. Moore should redo Spiderman.

errrr really dont understand why there bothering with rebooting spiderman its too fresh in peoples mind.. boring.

A Spider-Man origin reboot?

The first one only came out in 2002 didn’t it?

Are attention spans in Hollywood that short?

How else could they re-tell the origin story anyway?

Another textbook case of the studio getting in the way of the tried and proven artist and messing everything up.

Hopefully they’ll do something along the lines of The Incredible Hulk and spend less time on the origin story. I mean, we do all know how it goes (and by we I mean most of the United States).

Isn’t it too soon to reboot “Spider-Man?” And really, does it need to be rebooted at all (no, it doesn’t). Don’t they understand that the whole “gritty reboot” thing is getting a little old?

These remakes are just plain idiotic. Spider-Man? another planet of the apes? Ghosts of Mars? Give me a break. Why is Ryan Reynolds playing two different super heroes? Why is he doing any?

I’m diggin’ the sequel plans for G.I. Joe (a movie that I thoroughly enjoyed, much to my surprise) and X-Men Origins… As long as we get to see Patrick Stewart again. ;)

As for District Nine, Spiderman, and yet ANOTHER POTC.. I actually like POTC, but please! No more! The first and second movies were really good, but the third just.. I didn’t care for it much. Leave it alone. I love Depp and the whole cast, really, but it’s gonna take a lot to impress me with numero cuatro.

Several people should be precluded from ever directing a movie ever again. They are: Michael Bay, James Cameron, Roland Emmerich, and George Lucas.
Really. Think about it.

#25 I know. I was just trying to make a joke. Albeit clumsily, lame and totally unfunny. My apologies.

I have an idea….why not just reboot Reboot?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRQgybOH1tw

This is pretty ridiculous how every original idea has to be rebooted. I can see retelling older franchises to make them accessible to a new audience, but a new origin story after only three movies? C’mon!

I’d like to see the studio go ahead and change the paradigm to develop and shoot multiple movies for sure-fire franchises at the same time before the casts, like in ST09, get a wrinkled-up and worn out. If you tell a compelling story well, the audience will accept it.
