1. Charles Trotter - January 21, 2010

Yes, because Del Taco promotion worked so well for Nemesis back in 2002. :-P At least this time it’s more than just lame coupons or whatever it was. Looks like they actually put some thought into the promotion.

2. CaptainDonovin - January 21, 2010

Too bad there aren’t any Del Tacos here in Minnesota.

3. Newman - January 21, 2010

I’m starting to think I will actually be getting this game…..

4. Charles Trotter - January 21, 2010

I would get this game in a heartbeat… if I could afford it.

5. Kaiser The Great - January 21, 2010

Fighting fighting fighting…

6. LCDR Arch - January 21, 2010

2. Here in Minnesota also…funny I was just googling that when I read your post….

7. Newman - January 21, 2010

alright I just caved and pre-ordered!!! I hope my computer can handle it

8. Tiberius Mudd - January 21, 2010

Most unusual…

9. DS9 IN PRIME TIME - January 21, 2010

Why didnt they go national with Tacobell or Burger King? Burger King did the collecter cups for the movie… Why would they not do it now?

10. Daddy Todd - January 21, 2010

@DS9 — They get the best deal they possibly can. BK and Taco Bell must not have been interested.

11. somethoughts - January 21, 2010

Never head of Del Taco? Is that like Dell Computers and Taco Bell?

Why don’t they get a more international restaurant to promote their game?

12. somethoughts - January 21, 2010

Gosh, there are so many states that do not have this lessor known restaurant. Who was the genius that signed this promotion deal, are they not looking for eastern and central gamers?

13. CmdrR - January 21, 2010

NCC-1700-A ?

14. DS9 IN PRIME TIME - January 21, 2010

Thanks you so much i never knew there was a Del Taco an hour from my house!!! im going there this weekened now hahaha

15. Hermioni - January 21, 2010

@5 Kaiser The Great

The game´s promotional campaign, as presented on TrekMovie through the various published screen-shots, has left me with the exact same impression…, which is why I do not seem to be able to muster any interest for it.

16. John Gill - January 21, 2010

What is “Del Taco”?

17. Navy - January 21, 2010

The best fast taco place in existence. I wish there was one in BC.

My wife and I took a road trip from Vancouver BC to Los Vegas and almost lived exclusively off of their food once we had tried it after crossing into the California border.

18. Olley Olley Olley - January 21, 2010

hey can the pre-order market UK market trade in that tribble for a shuttle pet?

19. Olley Olley Olley - January 21, 2010

can the UK pre order market change ds9 uniforms for a TOS connie?

20. Riker1701E - January 21, 2010

Im in the beta and I also preorder the digital download and I tell you it’s the best Star Trek game and I am having lots of fun. I just wish that I had a Del Taco cause I have collected all Star Trek cups and more since I was a kid.

21. Olley Olley Olley - January 21, 2010

I’d rather have a shuttle and a cool ship instead of Voyager uniforms and fur balls.

sure I’m QQ
but I also speak for a lot of STO fans.

hold that lifetime membership

22. Riker1701E - January 21, 2010

I would rather have a shuttle too

23. Desstruxion - January 21, 2010

A few nice ship designs there. The ships have always been my favorite Trek “characters.”

What the heck’s a Del Taco?

24. Scott - January 21, 2010

Naugles, Naugles. :)

Get a beta key folks. Seriously try the game first.

25. Magic - January 21, 2010

They Have Del Taco in Las Vegas. I will just have to go to get my cups and codes!

Like I needed a reason anyway.

26. Pyork (JE) Productions - January 21, 2010

Screw it. I don’t care about the beta reviews. I’m playing this game when I get the chance

27. NX01 - January 21, 2010

what is a Dell Taco? Is that Dell Computer’s new lap top shaped like a Taco?

28. Will_H - January 21, 2010

Kinda weird that the Enterprise-A is active in the 25th century. And aparently been refitted…again?

29. NX01 - January 21, 2010

Dell Taco is not on the East Coast .

But here is a link to what states they are located in.

Enjoy if you are no where near the east coast.

30. MDSHiPMN - January 21, 2010

This might be the best use of the Star Trek license ever.

31. Whatsit - January 21, 2010

Gotta love promotions and contests where you get screwed if you’re not in the right part of the country/world. Awesome.

32. Gary A. Neumann - January 21, 2010

30 – LMFAO

33. MorbidGorn - January 21, 2010

I figure if people eat Del Taco they’ll be spending too much time on the toilet to go and play Star Trek online.

34. ryanhuyton - January 21, 2010

Those cups are cool. Nice pics as well. I guess Starfleet lost so many ships in the Dominion War they had to bring the Enterprise A back into service. In which case there might be an Enterprise B in the game as well.

35. Ashley - January 21, 2010 That’s the ship I’ve been flying! Rapier-class escort.. very fast and maneuverable and packs a punch, and it’s lil and adorable too. :)

Anyway, for those of you who think it’s just fighting.. while there is a lot of space and ground combat, there are also other types of missions. Missions involving exploring uncharted space and planets and anomalies and bringing back the data, and missions involving investigations of various things. There’s also a pretty well thought-out storyline which spans all of trek, and I think they’ve really done their research. There have been surprising references all throughout it… nods to many minor details throughout all the shows. I think overall it’s been pretty good so far (at least in open beta) and although they could use even more variety in the mission types and structures, it’s still a nice mix for an MMO.

Oh, and for those of you wondering about the ships… for each tier and type, there’s three classes you can choose from. But you just buy the one type and you can customize it anytime at a starbase or spacedock to be any of those three classes or mix and match them. And one class usually seems to be an established class. So for a tier 2 cruiser, one of them is the constitution-refit while the other two are more modern variations including the Excalibur. Same with the miranda-class in tier 1. Tier 2 escort, there’s the Saber-class and then the more modern Rapier and Ushaan.

36. D-Mar - January 21, 2010

Too bad Del-Taco isn’t nationwide.

37. TJ - January 21, 2010

#36… Oh, but it is. From California to Flordia to Milwalkee. Just not in thos “Other lesser states. lol

38. somethoughts - January 22, 2010

I guess the person who signed this promotion deal loved del tacos and thought it was nationwide…facepalm

39. Olley Olley Olley - January 22, 2010

have they never heard of Burger King or McDonalds?

40. somethoughts - January 22, 2010

I hope they didn’t choose Del Taco to appease our beloved Mexican writer Bob! That would be so narrow minded.

41. Mark Lynch - January 22, 2010

Isn’t that what laptops are for? ;-)

On another note, I have been somewhat of a detractor for STO having read a lot about it during development and listening to a friends comments when it was in closed beta. I have since downloaded a copy for myself (all 6.6Gb of it!) and managed to get an open beta key.
I have been playing it on and off since then.

My initial misgivings are the same as before, there is a hell of a lot of combat. Which I personally believe goes against the grain of what Star Trek is about. I have found some exploration missions, but these appear to be few and far between. Maybe that will change.

I feel this game will do well, but in my opinion it is Star Trek in name only. Ultimately any MMORPG has to rely on combat and trading to make way for player advancement, and Star Trek has never been heavily reliant on either to tell its stories in the past.

Anyway, that is what I think. Anyone who has a structured counter-argument, I am all ears.

Live long and prosper.

42. somethoughts - January 22, 2010

I agree, Star Trek has always been about exploration, not shit blowing up, I rather they have focused on raiding dungeons and unlocking quests and solving mysteries. PVP system is good if the rewards and fame is there, but what makes a good mmo imo is the ability to sustain the person who seeks adventure and storyline and satisfy the urge to be a hero.

I will let all the bugs get fixed and get feedback from the gaming community before considering buying a copy or just wait for a free trial with no problems.

I don’t really like the fact that the time is set 30 years after a dismal film, it would have been much better if it was set in the TOS era where you can progress to the TNG era or in JJ’s alternative reality and progress the story into the unknown, the actions of the gamers dictating what happens to the universe. Also giving captain ability to any new comer gamer is a mistake, in WOW you had to earn your mount at lvl 60 or flight at lvl 70 through quests and collaboration.

The fact that you are able to command your own starship right away shows me that they do not care about progression and earning your command but rather immediate rewards like fast food which is unfortunate.

43. Mark Lynch - January 22, 2010

Must say I totally agree with your last paragraph. I for one would have looked forward to spending a lot of hours actually going through Star Fleet Academy honing my skills, graduating and then working my up through the ranks serving on various starships, ultimately getting to captain and a command of my own. In that way, you would feel as if you have earned the right to be there. Much like you mention levelling up in WOW

If it is possible in this game to be a captain of a ship filled automated “players” then it should be just as easy to be a lower ranking crew member on the same ship getting your orders from a virtual captain. The game can be made to unfold in the same manner.

I would pay good money to play a game like that. Perhaps Cryptic visit these boards, you never know, there might be a server upgrade in the future that gives us that kind of extra depth to the game.

I would love to play a game which really embodies what Star Trek is about. I think the closest we ever got was STTNG: A Final Unity

Live long and prosper

44. somethoughts - January 22, 2010

STTNG: A Final Unity was a great game, loved the voice overs and puzzles/exploration.

45. BiggestTOSfanever - January 22, 2010

They STO players on right now look like they’re having so much fun without us. sigh…..

[…] Star Trek Online Hooking Up With Del Taco For Promotion + New … […]

47. Hoggzman - January 22, 2010

I’m on and it’s very good. They have improved the look for the Constituation class ship since the pic above (no silly sqaure on the deflector) and uniform customisation allows a pretty close approximation of TOS uniforms, so I’m one happy fella!!

48. The Original Animated Next Generation Deep Space Voyager Enterprise I-XI - January 22, 2010

@37 TJ:

You’re calling my home state of Texas, the state with possibly the richest history in the union (not to mention second largest state), a “lesser state”?

49. somethoughts - January 22, 2010

I think he was being sarcastic.

50. Mark Lynch - January 22, 2010

Got to Memory Alpha a little while ago, but there seems to be a bug where you cannot give your anomalous data to Commander Romaine…. sigh.

Live long and prosper

51. Jtrekker - January 22, 2010

In reference to the whole Del Taco thing:

Keep in mind that the whole point of the promotional deal is to bring people into the restaurant. If that fails, then the company ends up wasting money on a promotion that doesn’t work. It makes sense that a chain like McDonald’s or Burger King wouldn’t want to pick this up. Remember, this is just promoting a VIDEO GAME! This is a MUCH SMALLER, NICHE AUDIENCE than a movie or a TV show. A large chain stands to lose much more money by attempting to do a promotion for something like this. I would imagine in a situation like this, we’re lucky a place like Del Taco even decides to do the promotion.

52. Admiral Crane - January 22, 2010

#34: Wouldn’t NCC-1700-A be the Constitution-A instead of the Enterprise-A?

53. AC - January 22, 2010

There is a Del Taco in South Bend, IN. weird.

54. Ashley - January 22, 2010

@50 There’s a console near her where you deposit samples if you have a mission for that. Otherwise you can get bonuses on some Mk II weapons and equipment from her, either purchased directly or you gotta have it in your inventory to gain a bonus, and you need whatever amount of data samples listed under the items.

Or are you talking about a specific ‘higher’ rank mission? Because I’m rank 18 right now and, although I haven’t done a lot of older missions yet, I’ve only gotten one mission to go there so far…

55. Captain Otter - January 22, 2010

As a Mac user with no Del Taco in my area, I guess I’m just SOL all the way around.

56. Hermioni - January 22, 2010

@ 35 Ashley, @41 Mark Lynch @ 42 somethoughts,

Thank you for taking the time to share your perspectives on the narrative aspects of the game.

It would seem that my initial impressions of STO, based on what I could gather from various bits and pieces of its promotional presentation, might have been somewhat one-sided, but certainly not completely false.

57. Fuabmushu - January 22, 2010

Yes! Del Taco! Have never heard of the chain and not one 100 miles anywhere near my location! Sweet!!

58. The Last Maquis - January 22, 2010

@48 Get a rope!!

59. ryanhuyton - January 22, 2010

#52 Of course you are right. I thought it was “NCC-1701-A” at first glance.
But why would the “new” Consitution have the same number as the original plus the “A” ? As far as I know, only the ships named “Enterprise” that came after Kirk’s first ship got to carry the same registry number plus a letter suffix. The replacement Defiant on “Deep Space Nine” had the NX-74205 number, the same as its predecessor.

60. Joel1245 - January 22, 2010

Wow, I forgot all about Taco Del….er….I mean Del Taco. That was on the west coast when I lived there. Being in Florida now, I’ve never seen it. Yeah, they should have gone with Taco Bell or some other chain.

61. Sci-Fi Guy - January 22, 2010

Mmmm….Del Taco….wish they still had those here.

But, if they did…I’d be a fatty fatty two by four.

62. Tanner Waterbury - January 23, 2010

Taco Time is MUCH better in terms of tastiness. STO Should of signed with them.

63. Charla - January 23, 2010

#42 I would love to play a game like that-

You could head up your own Star Trek game if you could get ahold of the right people- it is a long process, but do-able. Get some investors, computer geeks, etc.

I think the true Trekkies would love that game style as well. I don’t know about the licensing issues though, you’d have to get lawyers involved I assume.

64. Jason R. Spriggs - January 23, 2010

i threw up on a bathroom door at del taco years ago.
good times…

65. Eli - January 23, 2010

Come on… Del Taco? How about Taco John’s or Taco Bell, or something else that actually has a location somewhere remotely near the Minneapolis metropolitan area?

Between this and the Exhibition, Minnesota’s not getting much Trek love, only Trek tease…

66. Tacofreak - January 24, 2010

Taco Bell isn’t as good as Del Taco.

67. somethoughts - January 24, 2010

It’s not a question about which one is better, but which one is more accessible by the masses. Very simple marketing, do you want a specialty brand advertising a product/promotion for you or do you want a popular accessible brand advertising a product/promotion for you? I would prefer the mass route, the more accessible the better.

If Del Taco is only available in say 20+ states and Taco Bell is available in all states, which one would you choose? The target market surely would be larger with Taco Bell, you can target 50% more potential customers leading to more potential subscriptions/gamers.

68. 16309A - January 26, 2010

Del Taco? Huh? Who the heck are they? No such place place in Pennsylvania that I know of.

69. Pestalence - January 27, 2010

Just to set things Streight.

in TOS the ship has a dedication plaque at the back of the brigde.

It states “Starship Class” on the Enterprise NCC-1701

In ST II TWOK, the Simulator states bridge for “Enterprise Class” for the refit NCC-1701 Enterprise (Original ship refit into a new hull design)

in ST V, the blueprints for the NCC-1701-A Enterprise states “Constitution Class”

the NCC-1701-B is Excelcior Class

the NCC-1701-C is Ambassador Class

the NCC-1701-D is Galaxy Class

the NCC-1701-E is Soveign Class

70. niggapleez - February 18, 2010

The game is more buggy than Lindsay Lohans cooch, its never online, and there is absolutely no tutorial, so you have no Idea what the hell your doing. So if you’re able to get online you’re on your own, I know its brand new, but after years of other successful MMORPG’s, they should learn exactly how to execute this, IT SUCKS

71. J. *Fleet - February 23, 2010

Feb. 23, 2010

Hello: Has anyone discovered what the four (4) cup designs are? Here in Utah, the Del Taco stores haven’t got a clue. How are we supposed to collect four (4) different cups if we do not know what the h _ _ l they are! Yes, I’m frustrated.

Thanks to whomever has this info. I’ll even help you get these cups if you live in a state that doesn’t have Del Taco.

J. *Fleet.
