I loved the costuming in the new movie. From the tweaks to the old Trek outfits, the 50's-ish Kelvin era uniforms... and the Romulans gear. It was wonderful.

#55, Jack, I don't mean to be overly critical of the movie. If they don't change a thing vis-a-vis the costumes, I won't really care. Personally, I think it is fine to have an opinion about something. Even these diehard "fanboys" who proclaim everything as great surely must love_some_things less than others. Pointing those things out does not make one less of a fan or bitter, or negative, etc. That said, the Kelvin uniforms were pretty basic and has already been observed here, derivative of Forbidden Planet and Flash Gordon. While I liked what they evoked in a Star Trek movie, I'm not particularly impressed by them fro s design standpoint (although they were the best fitting and constructed of all of them). The cadet uniforms likewise were adaptations of a traditional contemporary military academy, which I thought was interesting choice for Trek, with a bold splash of red. Again nothing revolutionary. And those simulator jumpsuits reminded me of big gray Snuggies. My overall impression was one of a bunch of disparate styles reminiscent of the various different eras of Star Trek, which would certainly resonate with the fans, but in general lacked any kind of overall cohesiveness within the film. I just didn't feel the duty uniforms and the cadet/dress uniforms existed in the same universe.

The pants in the Starfleet uni look much better in TOS than tucked into the boots in the movie.

On the kelvin there seemed to be only two uniform colours, did not see any red but I did like them

just because I feel like they belong in the late 24th Century d

@49 Even the Kelvin, Vulcan and cadet unifors? Derivative, I mean?

I sort of wish they'd not used the starfleet arrowhead for the Kelvin crew (but get why they did)-- mainly because the different insignia for every ship/station/starbase baffled me as a kid (how do they remember them all? I thought). I love that they used it in that episode of enterprise.

"Star Trek" had some absolutely great costume designs. My favorite for me is the two-tone suit worn by Admiral Pike. Nice nod to TMP. I enjoyed the Kelvin uniforms as well. Same for the cadet uniforms. Overall there's not much to complain about in regards to the costumes. Certainly deserves an award or two.

#50

I guess that's correct. I just have a hard time buying that Starfleet went from gold for command in the 22nd century, to blue in the 2230s, back to gold in the 2250s/60s and then to red in the 24th century.

I bought the gold to red transition since everyone wore red in the TOS movie era. I just assume when Starfleet went back to the tri-color scheme, they just kept command in red. Maybe it's just me.

And I totally bought into the Kelvin uniforms being a bridge between the Ent and the TOS outfits - see the shoulder-patch thingies from ENT (which are inspired by the 24th Century designs) and the wrist command rankings. So, if you think about it, Starfleet uniforms overall have a lot of shoulder flair going on, it's only TOS uniforms that are an different. Patches are in, people!

I love the mini skirt with tall boot look. Not fond of the burqa Amanda wore but Winona Ryder looked beautiful. I have the black insignia on black shirt Kirk wore--Hanukah present! I get tons of complinments on it for a change!
