I have twittered under the name linuxglobe for many months now, recently, this is what I have to say about STO : I have two complaints about STO, 1. there is no “lite” version for casual gamers, where you can play for 3 months for $30 or less; and 2. there is no MAC version available. Not everyone is running the new Windows 7. I know some ppl who can run STO on Fedora Linux using WINE technology. The Makers of STO should NOT leave MAC users behind and SHOULD make a “Lite” version for casual gamers such as myself who wants to save money, and not waste it on a year’s worth of gaming…

Way back to #5: The game is influenced more by Countdown than by Destiny (in Countdown it establishes that the Romulans/Nero are ticked that Vulcan held the red-matter that could save them, which leads to the dispute in ST: Online). However, I can’t see it being totally irreconcilable between the Borg defeat in Destiny and their re-appearance in Star Trek: Online. They’re the Borg. They’re like cockroaches. They adapt. If one Borg somehow survived the mystical dissolving of the collective, yadda yadda yadda, 20 years of assimilating later they’re back and a bit more badass.

25-Ha ha ha! Yes, even a high school science student could see through the whole exploding star problem. However, you have to suspend disbelief, especially with the new timeline, which calls for a double suspension of disbelief.

10-I imagine that shooter video games are more commercially successful than diplomacy video games. The best diplomacy is a loaded phaser bank said Scotty in TOS.

Am I the only one who thinks the developers have never actually seen a space battle in action (Trek or Wars)?

All those ships would not be simply sitting in place, firing back and forth at each other.

70- “Conflict” does not necessitate “combat.” Even the episodes you name required cunning and cleverness to win, and not just firepower. I also don’t recall a single ship’s weapon being fired in “Space Seed.”

I am not adverse to war in Trek, again I am a huge DS9 fan. I just hope the game has more to it than how big my photorps are, and how long my phaser range is. I wouldn’t want the game to be ONLY exploration either- I just am not interested in playing another high stakes War for the Federation. Some politics and brinksmanship ala “Errand of Mercy” or “The Wounded” or “In the Pale Moonlight” would be cool though.

Star Trek isn’t about combat? I guess the show has something for everyone but my favorite episodes certainly had conflict. Space Seed, Doomsday Machine, Balance of Terror to name a few. My favorite films were Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, Undiscovered Country, First Contact, and I even liked Nemesis. The exploration aspect of the show was interesting enough to be tolerable but not the primary reason this Trekker watched.

I’ve enjoyed the game so far. I’m very grateful to have something other than WoW that peaks my interest in the gaming world.

It is a bit odd that Spock would explain everything in the opening given that he is in the alternate timeline. I think Picard, Data, Riker, Sisko, or Janeway would of been more credible. Star Trek is fiction and like most fiction has some things that is just goofy, I took it in stride and just enjoyed hearing Nimoy.
