#55 -- But it's already been confirmed that Widmore faked it. There's the references to the 300+ empty graves and the purchase order for the plane. Not to mention that Widmore himself said so, to Daniel in the episode "The Variable".

3 things to understanding Season 6 (at least before it ends in May)

#1) Understand how Juliet knew "it worked" and why she was talking about having coffee with someone

#2) The Island is like when the Borg create a temporal vortex in "First Contact" and the Enterprise is inside the vortex and is unaffected by the "changes" to the timeline. (And the Island was WHERE the "changes" in timeline were made) (There is a reason why I put quotes around "changes")

#3) Assuming we have only seen two "timelines". Remember the "faked" wreck of 815 in the Sunda trench that was discovered. Ever think that wreckage was real and from a 3rd timeline where Frank Lapidus was flying the plane and not Seth Norris. (the hand without wedding ring was Lapidus)

Quite possibly the timeline where "it only ends once" according to Jacob, is the not the original timeline where the plane crashes on the island, or the X timeline where the plane lands and the island is under the ocean, but where the 815 people decide to sacrifice themselves for the greater good and the island is ok and the plane is under the ocean (in the Sunda trench)

This is tragic but would be lot like where Donny Darko lets the plane engine land on him to end the divergent timeline or where the guy in "The Butterfly Effect" commits suicide in the womb by choking his own umblical cord to make things turn out right.

NX01
this has been hashed out here many times. Trek has posited parallel timestreams and universes since the beginning (Mirror, Mirror), and there are other examples, like Parallels. So there isn't a single rule in Trek's past for time travel. The new team believe in the quantum view and so that's that. And of course from the franchise point of view, since new stories are still be made in books, comics and games in the prime timeline, it still 'exists' in a practical sense.

As for LOST it was just an analogy, but 'prime' doesn't mean better, it could be timeline A and timeline B.

RE: Desmond
Well it could be a couple of things. One is that Desmond has a special relationship with time (like shown in The Constant). Or it could just basic divergent timeline rules. Since the island was blown up in the 70s that changes things. Desmond was only on the island because of the boat race set up by Whidmore. If the island was destroyed in 1977, then Whidmore likely died

Yes, NX01, it IS having your cake and eating it too-- but not to shut up the fanboys, but to leave it open-ended so if they want to return to tell stories in the other universe, they can-- even leaves the possibility open to have characters jump to and from.

And what's wrong with having your cake and eating it to? Isn't that what's called an ideal situation?

The idea of a 'prime' universe is stupid. On one hand, they talk about the ST:09 universe trying to 'correct' itself (to align with how history originally unfolded), and in the next it's a parallel universe? What's to correct if it's a separate, distinct universe?

It was never mentioned in the new movie that Spock's red matter punched a hole through quantum realities. All that was said was that he traveled back in time. If he did, there is no 'prime' universe any longer as ST:09 IS the prime universe.

To say otherwise sorta makes the temporal prime directive pointless, doesn't it? I mean if every time you travel back in time, you're just creating a new/separate universe, then what's to worry about? You can go back in time and change whatever you like without worrying about the 'prime' timeline. Kinda makes you wonder why Picard was so worried about the Borg in First Contact? No worries - the prime universe is always safe! Hell, the same goes for pretty much every time travel incident in all of Trek.

This whole 'prime universe' crap is just to shut up fanboys who can't stand the thought of things being different. It's having your cake and eating it - plain and simple.

yeah I was actually thinking like that too it would just be too funny and absurd if all this turns out to be a holodeck simulation. I am half expecting a voice saying "computer end program" any time now, while watching a lost episode.

#1=you are wrong...in OLD Trek there are two distinct timelines...Prime Timeline and the Mirror Universe...then with JJverse there's THREE distinct timelines, and a fourth once the JJ-version of the mirror universe is featured...but in reality, in the TNG episode 'Parallels' it is PROVEN that the JJverse angle is CORRECT because a quantum anomaly that Worf entered caused him to bounce across multiple timelines like a stone across the pond of the metaverse...plus, the 'Prime TImeline' as it was when Nero went back in time was the result of so many alterations in history that since the beginning of TOS the primary timeline wherein the stories take place changed like at least 3 dozen times...

and an add-on to #44:
