GENRE MOVIE NEWS

Christopher Nolan to Help Reboot Superman + Batman 3 Moves Forward
The Superman franchise is finally getting some traction as "Batman Begins" / "The Dark Knight" helmer Christopher Nolan has been brought on board to mentor development of Superman’s return to the big screen: [Deadline Hollywood]:

"Our insiders say that the brains behind rebooted Batman has been asked to play a “godfather” role and ensure The Man Of Steel gets off the ground after a 3 1/2-year hiatus. Nolan’s leadership of the project can set it in the right direction with the critics and the fans, not to mention at the box office."

The project is still in the early stages of development and Nolan isn’t expected to direct it.  Little is known, but we do know that it won’t be a sequel to 2006’s "Superman Returns":

"It would definitely not be a follow-up to Superman Returns."…As recently as this summer, Warner Bros was still contemplating how to proceed. We were told that "Bryan or Brandon are not completely out of it yet."

In other news, Deadline reports that Nolan has begun work on his follow-up to "The Dark Knight".  Nolan has reportedly presented a story idea for the third film to Warner Brothers and his brother Jonah and co-writer David Goyer have started writing a script based on it.

Escape From New York Being Remade – Details on a different NYC Prison
Remakes continue to be the thing in Hollywood. NY Mag’s Vulture blog is reporting that New Line Cinema is pushing ahead with plans to remake John Carpenter’s 1981 classic "Escape From New York". Vulture reports that Allan Loeb has penned a rewrite which the studio is very happy with:

A big reason for the fast track was creative: Loeb nailed the humor in Plissken without slipping into camp, and he changed Snake’s rescue-mission target from a president to a female senator, thereby upping the banter quotient.

The remake will also feature a different portrayal of New York:

So in Escape 2.0, the Big Apple that the as-yet-uncast Snake Plissken is dropped into will be geographically undesirable, but intact: This Manhattan was evacuated and turned into a privately run penal colony after the detonation of a crude radioactive dirty bomb on the outskirts of the city. “It is not a disaster movie,” says a source close to the project. “It is an exposé of an ecosystem, if you put a huge wall around Manhattan and then dropped in the most fucked-up, dangerous criminals on Earth.” This means New York will still be recognizable to audiences, à la I Am Legend, rather than an entirely new Armageddon Island.

First Look at Toy Story 3 Characters; Final Trailer Thursday
Disney/Pixar has unveiled a new character that will be featured in "Toy Story 3": Peas-in-a-Pod. Here is how the toy is described:

Peas-in-a-Pod will quickly become a parent’s favorite on-the-go toy. The soft, plush pod secures the happy peas inside with a durable metal zipper, making it perfect for the car or stroller. The Peas-in-a-Pod plush toy also develops fine motor skills by catering to a child’s natural grab instinct. Pulling the three peas out of the pod will provide repeated enjoyment for infants and toddlers, and soon they’ll learn to put them back in! Machine washable. Not for human consumption.

Disney also announced that the final trailer will be released tomorrow. Check out two new images — including one which also features the character Ken (voiced by Michael Keaton) and teases 14 new characters in the film — along with a video highlighting Peas-in-a-Pod below.  "Toy Story 3" hits theaters on June 18, 2010.

Tron may become TV & Film Franchise + Black Hole redo on track
If "Tron Legacy" is a success, Disney will reportedly move forward with a TV show for 2011 & 2012 (possibly for Disney XD) and they are already planning another "Tron" sequel for 2013… [AICN] In other news, a new trailer for the film is expected to be attached to "Alice in Wonderland" (which hits theaters on March 5th). [AICN]

And in other Disney sci-fi reboot news, "Tron Legacy" director Joseph Kosinski will begin work soon on his script for his reimagining of "Black Hole". [MTV Movies Blog]

Darren Aronofsky Still Attached to RoboCop
While promoting the upcoming film "The Wolfman", screenwriter David Self talked about some of his other projects and said that Darren Aronofsky is still attached to direct "RoboCop" for MGM and also confirmed that it’s an origin story/reboot:

"I’m still involved with it and Darren Aronofsky’s still involved with it," says Self. "He’s making another movie right now (Black Swan), but we’re waiting for MGM, to sort things out since they’re a large corporation and it’s a situation where we have to be practical. We’re waiting to continue with them, we hope that that happens soon and we can get back to it soon."

Cowboys & Aliens and Spider-Man 3 (in 3D) Get Release Dates
Earlier in the week Universal Pictures announced that Jon Favreau’s "Cowboys & Aliens" — starring Daniel Craig and Olivia Wilde — will hit theaters on July 29, 2011, and now as reported earlier, Sony has announced that their upcoming untitled "Spider-Man" reboot from director Marc Webb will be released on July 3, 2012.  The studio also confirmed that the film will be released in 3D:

"Spider-Man is the ultimate summer movie-going experience, and we’re thrilled the filmmakers are presenting the next installment in 3D. Spider-Man is one of the most popular characters in the world, and we know audiences are eager and excited to discover Marc’s fantastic vision for Peter Parker and the franchise," said Jeff Blake, Chairman of Sony Pictures Worldwide Marketing & Distribution.

There’s also some news on the casting front, as Heat Vision reports that "Percy Jackson & The Olympians" star Logan Lerman has not been in talks to play Peter Parker: "No offers have been made, nor have any business discussions been made with Lerman," a Sony executive said.  In other release date news, Universal has pushed Peter Berg’s "Battleship" out of 2011 to May 25, 2012 while "Stretch Armstrong"  — which Taylor Lautner (‘New Moon’) is attached to star — has also been delayed to 2012 (in 3D).

Terminator Rights Sold to Hedge Fund
Santa Barbara California-based hedge fund Pacificor put in the winning bid of $29.5 million for the rights to "Terminator" on Monday and just today a bankruptcy judge in U.S. district court approved the deal.  As part of the deal, previous rights holder Halcyon will be paid $5 million for any new film (up to 3) and will retain rights to "Terminator 3" and "Terminator Salvation".  So who makes the films? Well, according to Deadline Hollywood, Pacificor has granted under-bidders Sony and Lionsgate (who will remain partners in any transaction) an exclusive window to negotiate distribution.

Joe Johnston Talks Captain America; Casting + Red Skull Confirmed as Villain
While doing the rounds promoting his latest film "The Wolfman", director Joe Johnston took some time to address his next film "The First Avenger: Captain America".  First things first, Johnston revealed that a casting announcement should be made no later than March 1st and that an American will "absolutely" be cast in the title role:

"Oh, yeah. I don’t think we could make the film without an American playing the part. But we may not be casting in America, because we’re going to London. I think we’ll probably shoot in the U.K. for most of it, because it takes place in Europe. But, yeah, we’ll definitely be casting [an American]."

Johnston added that he has auditioned "five or six guys" for the role ranging from 23-32 years old and also that he hopes the role will ultimately go to an unknown "…he’s probably been in something, but you won’t know who he is. You won’t recognize him, and we’ll surround him with more prominent names. That’s who we’re looking for."  On the story front, Johnston confirmed that Red Skull will be the villain and also expanded a bit on the decision to base the majority of the film during WWII:

"Virtually the entire story except the bookends are in World War II because we all recognize we have one chance to tell the origin story of how he became Captain America, you can’t tell a modern story and then go back and tell the origin story. If you’re going to do it, let’s do it. Let’s do it first. Everyone wanted to tell an origin story. There was a version where it was a modern story and it didn’t work."

More details from Johnston:

  • The Invaders will appear "in the entire second half" of the film and will be European (it’s unclear if all or just some of the members will appear). [CHUD]
  • ‘Captain America’ will be shot with high-definition cameras and could be converted to 3D later. [SCI FI Wire]
  • The character will be a USO performer in the movie: "…we have Steve Rogers forced into the USO circuit. After he’s made into this super-soldier, they decide they can’t send him into combat and risk him getting killed. He’s the only one and they can’t make more. So they say, ‘You’re going to be in this USO show’ and they give him a flag suit. He can’t wait to get out of it." [Hero Complex]

Bill Murray Open to Appearing in Ghostbusters 3; Confirms Rumors
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Bill Murray confirmed rumors surrounding his potential reprisal of the character Peter Venkman in "Ghostbusters III" [SPOILERS]:

"I’ll come back in Ghostbusters III only if I get to be a ghost. I said to them, ‘I’ll do it if you kill me off in the first reel.’ So now they are going to have me as a ghost in the film."

You may remember Sigourney Weaver hinting at the same type of storyline a few weeks ago.  "Ghostbusters III" is expected to begin shooting this summer with Ivan Reitman at the helm and could be released as early as next year.

James Cameron Might Not Direct Avatar 2
For the first time since its release, James Cameron’s "Avatar" did not carry the weekend box office.  The romantic comedy "Dear John" took first place over the weekend with $30.5 million to "Avatar’s" $22.9 million, ending the film’s seven-week hold at the box office.  However, "Avatar" beat "Dear John" on Sunday and has stayed ahead thus far this week with its 54-day domestic gross standing at $633.6 million.  "Avatar" has grossed $1.61 billion overseas for a worldwide cume of $2.24 billion. In other news, Cameron says he hasn’t decided if he’ll direct the film’s sequel (or sequels):

"[It’s] unknown right now," he said. "Have to look at that, and have to get a script pulled together—all that sort of thing."

Cameron also discussed "Battle Angel", which has been rumored to be his next project.  Cameron says that’s not a guarantee either, especially given the sequel possibility with "Avatar":

"We’re still figuring that out," Cameron said. "I love Battle Angel. I’ve always loved Battle Angel, but a second Avatar film is a possibility, and I’ve got a couple of other films that I’ve developed over the last few years as well. So it’s all still up in the air."

So Robocop is still a go?

While a Superman film as dark as his Batman stuff wouldn’t be what I think most would imagine, Nolan’s track record is ridiculously good. I totally trust him. Maybe he’ll infuse Superman with some sci-fi elements that the films have always lacked?

YES ! BATMAN 3 !!!! Nolan might make the greatest trilogy in hollywood ever made !

Another ‘Black Hole?’ I’d be wary of that one.

ditto with ‘Tron.’ I’d like to think the first ‘Tron’ was good enough.

All these remakes are proving my claim that there is no such thing as an original ideal left in Hollywood.

Infusing Superman with sci-fi elements I think would be really good!! I am not for going “dark”. I thought Superman Returns was dark enough and that didn’t work. Having said that, I WOULD like to see Darkseid in the next film.

I’d like to see Superman have to go into space for some reason. That would be cool.

I want a good Captain America movie. Please give him the traditional suit.

And why, again, are we remaking Robocop?

“Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton will star in Universal’s “The Thin” prequel.”

What’s “The Thin” ?

Is someone doing the story of El Kabong?

“*I’LL* do the thin’in’ around here, Babalooey!”

Tom Welling on the big screen as Superman . He’s been doing it for nearly a decade.

What about continuing the Smallville franchise to the big screen?

I’ve enjoyed Tom Welling’s portrayal over the years, why not a big budget movie?
It certainly couldn’t be worse than the craptastic Superman Returns.

Just throwing it out there.

I think Nolan would be gold for Superman.

I don’t think that would automatically mean dark like batman but definitely a feeling of reality.

I thought Brandon Routh was a good Superman in the spirit of Christopher Reeves and i loved Reeves first two movies.

If the next installment under Nolan is to change the feel it may be time for a new Superman.

Mel Gibson perhaps.

I’m all for Nolan taking a crack at Superman. The only thing that I DON’T want to see is Lex Luthor. Geez, enough already. Give Superman something to do that doesn’t involve a bald man with hair issues scheming. Give us Brainiac or something, anything. Batman 3? Awesome. Still no love for Wonder Woman?

Looking forward to “Batman 3”. I wonder who will be the villain(s)?
I’m going to bet it will come down to Harley Quinn, Catwoman or the Riddler plus a lesser known villain. And it will be interesting to see what “current events” become the inspiration. And I think number 3 should be called “The Caped Crusader”.

I think that Christopher Nolan will hit another home run with his version of “Superman”. I think it will have a slightly dark tone but not like what we saw in “Superman Returns”. And there probably will be new actors to play the main parts. Brandon Routh was okay, but Kate Bosworth and Kevin Spacey phoned it in. I hope someone else is the villain. And I am sure there will be less cgi and more practical effects seeing as how its Nolan’s style to “ground” fantasy in reality.

I enjoyed Superman Returns and hope the re-boot is in 3-D. If Scrooge looks good flying over London, imagine how good Superman will look flying over Metropolis.

I’m pretty sure Bill Murray is pulling everyone’s leg about his character being a ghost.

Can’t wait for The Crazies!

I enjoyed ‘Superman Returns’ as well as the four Christopher Reeve-era films before it. I will look forward to yet another one. May I suggest that a new score for a new ‘Superman’ movie–whether follow-up or reboot–should incorporate original music themes from the 1978 movie by John Williams? ‘Casino Royale’, the 2006 James Bond reboot, kept the Monty Norman-composed ‘James Bond Theme’ that was incorporated to David Arnold’s amazing score.

It could actually work, a Ghostbuster being a Ghost. But I’d worry that they’d try and make it too much like Caspar, to avoid upsetting the kiddies.

One word: Tron!

So many … reboots … can’t … take anymore … [sob]

Just watched The Black Hole again when reading about a reboot.
OMG that is a chatter fest, great visuals and a plodding plot, it reminds me of TMP.
The crazy sh!t at the end is straight out of a LSD binge!

Can Hollywood stop ruining great films with remakes?

Too many these days, just way too many.

I wish RoboCop could get a proper sequel rather than be remade.

RoboCop and Ghostbusters are my all time fav films and I am against a remake of the former because I love the original so much.

Although I did like Aronosky’s film The Wrestler, still not sure I am happy with one of my films being remade.

Ivan Reitman has vetoed the rumour that Venkman will be a ghost. Hope that does not happen. Being such a huge fan of Ghostbusters I want the main four to get a great chunk of screentime

Hope you’re right #14

24

as i said in 23 I think Ivan Reitman has vetoed this and that Sigorney say an earlier draft.

Regarding Superman, you HAVE to have the Superman theme, after that ok the composer can do what they want, but the Superman Theme stands the test of time like Star Wars or Indy.

#6 – from what I’ve heard Cap will have three suits in the movie.

++ MINOR SPOILERS ++

The first is exactly the age old traditional one right down to the wings on the head, which he wears when being used as a propaganda tool for the US; the second is a dark, military outfit that he puts together himself when he goes AWOL and goes to the front off his own bat; then, finally, he gets a compromise suit – something like the Ultimates version – when he realizes the power of the identity the USO gave him to inspire the regular troops around him to equally heroic deeds.

++++++

+++++++

+++++++

As I long time Marvel Zombie….I can’t help but get a kick out of the idea that Iron Man 2 takes places before the events of Tony Stark’s appearance in The Incredible Hulk.

I know this would ruin the tone of the 21st Century Marvel Universe on film, but I’d sure have a laugh if at some point during the opening credits we see an (*)…followed by something like… * Confused Marvelites? Don’t be. This yarn takes place before the events of The Incredible Hulk #2. ’nuff said! — Set-it-Straight Stan

I’m already laughing. (I really need to get a life.)

To me Superman should not go dark, to me her is the polar opposite of Batman, perhaps that is why Superman is harder to do, the character is more or less perfect and indestructable where as my appeal to the character of Batman is that he has no powers, he must rely on his physical and mental skills.

Disney sure is going to be disappointed when nobody cares about Tron Legacy. Seriously…nobody is talking about Tron except this website. :p

30.

Sadly, I think you’re right. Personally, I’m looking forward to the Legacy, but I have a feeling it will end up just like the first one…a bomb.

PLEEEZE make Superman a ’30s period piece, as it was intended to be.
Routh? He’s good, just get rid of the dorky new costume.

I hope James Cameron skips doing Avatar 2 and decides to do Battle Angel. I love that manga and I think Cameron would be the perfect director to adapt it.

#32: Strictly speaking, you can’t make a period piece set in the present day. That is, S+S were working, originally, in the 1930s so certainly didn’t intend their hero as a ‘period’ character! It’s worth noting, too, that Siegel kept on writing Superman comics up until the late 1960s and always set them in a ‘present day’ recognizable to the audiences reading it in any given year,

I’m not saying a 1930s period Superman movie wouldn’t be cool, I’m just saying we can’t really cite the creators’ intent when saying it would be cool.

yet still no news on predator 3 or alien 5? or mad max 4? the only sci fi movies in 2010 that are actually going to matter?

As far as Supperman they need to get Smallvilles Tom Welling. He would be the perfect one for the role and a great way to get him from being Clark to being Supperman. But recast the role of Lois Lane.

Venkman as a ghost? I can see this going the route of the Topper movies. Poor Egon and the rest of the Ghostbusters tormented by smart alek Venkman and his pet ghost Slimer…

Or, maybe Venkman is like the drill sergeant in Stripes, teaching the new GBs how to do it right.

OMG, RoboCop is going to be a reboot :-(

Please DO NOT bring back Brandon Routh to play the Man of Steel in the next movie nor have Tom Welling play him either. Welling has said over and over again that he does not want to wear Superman’s red-and blue suit. Have someone else who can do justice to the role and is a real fan (and a fresh face), like Joe Jonas, he looks and acts like Routh and can pull it off really (and extremely )well. So give the guy a chance.

I can’t wait to see Ghost busters III

Brandon Routh has been good as Agent Shaw on “Chuck”. I think maybe he gets a bum rap for the weakly written “Lois And Clark”, um, I mean, “Superman Returns”, and also because he was so much younger than Christopher Reeve despite the movie being a direct sequel to S2 (less of a problem now.)

“Inception” sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. The actors who made it have no idea what it is about, and the trailer leaves you clueless to what its about. Movie competition in the summer is fierce and DiCaprio is not the box office draw he once was. Unless they figure out a way to make the general public actually want to see the movie, it is doomed.

To do a Superman movie, they almost have to embrace the antipathy the public feels towards such a character. As Douglas Adams said: ‘Nobody likes a smart-arse!’

Robocop could be great if it’s used as a present day satire (rather than doing the 1980s send-ups that ran through the various incarnations. These days, it’s not so much corporate America, Thatcherism, Reaganomics, neo-cons and so on that are ripe for satire: it’s stuff like political correctness, busybody liberal extremists, oversized public sectors and invasion of privacy that are there to be mocked. A metal man meets Falling Down could be a lot of fun!

I heard the scuttlebutt about Bill Murray playing Venkman as a ghost quite a long way back (I’m not super-connected or anything, but the media is a surprisingly small family!) It makes sense, as Bill Murray might well want to record his scenes in one go in front of a green screen, rather than sign up for a film that hearkens back to an earlier time in a career that has seen him move a long way beyond a fun 80s supernatural comedy!

I’m as dubious about overly-delayed sequels as I am about remakes (Hello Indiana Jones!) but the film could still be fun!

Terminator . . . hmmm . . . with TSCC gone, I’m ready say goodbye the the franchise. It’s really said all it needs to (arguably nothing was necessary beyond the first film!)

That’s kind silly on the Escape from New York remake- the prison in that film was very recognizably New York. And guess what, they pulled it off for like $7 million dollars. That’s a pittance. ‘Creatives’ in Hollywood today are dumber than ever. It’s all gotta be CGI and cost 100 million dollars starring Ryan Reynolds. Barf.

I want to say, Congradulations to David Prowse for beating his cancer and hope he recovers soon. Prowse is so underated and he is hardly mentioned these days for his performance as Darth Vader in the original Star Wars films.

As far as the remakes, yeah, well, I didnt care for the black hole, or tron, But I did love the arcade game “Discs of Tron” one of the earliest death match games, Last time I played it I was 17. waaaaaaay back in 1982!

Brandon Routh does get a bum rap for Superman Returns and was perfect in the dual role of Clark Kent/Superman. Kate Bosworth was not a great Lois Lane however, and I agree that despite Kevin Spacey’s acting chops we are tired of Lex Luthor as the villain. Move on, but keep Brandon Routh, his look is perfection, he is Superman! And I may be mistaken but I don’t think anyone wants a Teeny-bopper like Joe Jonas as Superman in the next film.Do a Superboy TV series or cartoon if that’s what you’re interested in! And Tom Welling is Beautiful, but if he thinks he’s too COOL for the costume, then SCREW him! I never believed that he looked the part anyway and never watched Smallville. Never really liked Dean Cain as Superman either looks-wise! I think Brandon is the next best thing to Christopher Reeves iconic Superman. Now I just hope they get Wonder Woman right! Lynda Carter will be big shoes to fill! And as for Teeny-bopper Spidey, I have zero interest! I hope Trek 2012 kicks the crap out Spideyboy, and sends the franchise to Rura Penthe for Life Imprisonment, GOOD RIDDANCE SPIDERMAN ! Long live Trek!

HERES THE WINNING LINE BRANDON ROUTH AS SUPERMAN,NOLAN WOULD BE A GREAT OVERSEEER, MAKE THE STORY LINE LIKE SUPERMAN 2 WITH A LOT OF ACTION NO LEX NO ZOD, DARKSIDE IS A WINNER! HERS KEEPING THE FINGERS CROSSED!

I can’t believe I’m in the People vs George Lucas trailer. It’s cool enough to be in the movie!

I’m looking forward to People vs. George Lucas!

For Ghostbusters, I bet Bill Murray is completely kidding. He always kids.

I’m really annoyed this stupid Escape from NY remake is going through. I thought it was dead. There’s no reason to do a remake. Kurt Russell is plenty capable of doing another sequel. This will just be another disgrace.

This means New York will still be recognizable to audiences, à la I Am Legend, rather than an entirely new Armageddon Island.

So basically, what they’re saying is that they want to go the cheap, uninteresting, unimaginative route and just film stuff in NYC without even trying to make it different or interesting? And they’re switching the gender of the person Snake has to rescue, JUST so they can insert tacky “banter” and provide what will likely be a romantic interest for Snake?

All I can say is, WTF.

I agree with #49. Diddling with EFNY is heresy. That movie stands alone as a one-of-a-kind classic in cast, story, and genre, and any remake is going to look like a SyFy Saturday Night special in comparison. Now, I will agree that EFLA was a bit of a *WINK* *WINK* *NUDGE* *NUDGE* camp-fest as a sequel, but if we do get any more Plissken onscreen (and I am admittedly a die-hard Carpenter fan), it should be something unique to the mythos, not an attempt to shanghai an entire origin concept, put new tire and hubcaps on it, then call it your own. Remember: For every remake of ‘The Thing’, someone is going to produce a remake of ‘The Fog’. Carpenter ought to be off limits.
